• The Supreme Court's latest outrage
With Citizens United, the conservative Supreme Court expanded corporate political power by ruling that corporations could spend unlimited amounts of unregulated money to buy elections. However, last month, that same conservative Supreme Court restricted the power of organized labor by placing new requirements on how unions can spend money on political activity. According to a new ruling, unions must get opt-in permission from workers who are required to pay dues, but choose not to join the union, before those nonmember dues can be used for political purposes. This ruling overturned well-settled precedent, and gave anti-labor forces a victory well beyond what they were even seeking in the case before the court. Corporations and unions should face the same restrictions on using organizational money for political purposes. Tell Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid it's time for legislation requiring that corporations receive opt-in permission from shareholders before company funds can be used for political purposes.

Nationally our public school systems are failing our students. Parent involvement is not mandated. Our nations student's are required to attend school - but parents/guardians of failing students are not required to actively engage and support the learning process. Demand that Congress pass legislation that requires all parents of failing students to partner with the school system to support student achievement.

  • Newspaper Editors: Stop describing people as “illegal immigrants” and "illegal aliens"
The i-word is dehumanizing, racially charged and masquerades as legal terminology, which it is not. There are terms like “unauthorized” and “undocumented,” and other precise, rational descriptions that can be used. The i-word denies people due process and is incompatible with ethical, professional journalistic standards. The i-word inflames anti-immigrant rhetoric, which morphs into anti-Latino sentiment. By dropping the i-word, newspapers can stop fueling hate and prejudice toward members of its own community.

Harmless Pot Crimes fill our prisons, while Destructive Sex Offenders fill our neighborhoods. A SO's must simply register, while a pot smoker faces 10-25years for his/her first Federal offence. Women are currently the fastest growing prison population (3 out of 5 have children) Drug use is a treatable medical issue not a criminal one, where as, sex offences are an untreatable and incurable criminal issue, not a medical one. • Widow's Rights
Surviving spouses, especially widows, have been denied funds accumulated by their spouses during their working lives simply because they were too young. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a widow is, "a woman who has lost her husband to death and has not married again." Disabled widows are especially at a disadvantage because they no longer have the funds to make ends meet.
