Honor Joni! Rename West 16th Street, between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, “Joni Mitchell Way”It’s high time that the world’s greatest city should honor the beauty and genius of one of the world’s greatest artists. Joni Mitchell used to live in the ground floor apartment at 41 West 16th Street in the Chelsea District of Manhattan. This stretch of 16th Street, between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, should be renamed “Joni Mitchell Way.” There are many important moments in New York City’s history with Joni Mitchell. But let’s start with this one: Woke up, it was a Chelsea morning And the first thing that I knew There was milk and toast and honey And a bowl of oranges, too And the sun poured in like butterscotch And stuck to all my senses Oh, won't you stay We'll put on the day And we'll talk in present tenses Joni has said that the song “Chelsea Morning” was inspired by a mobile she constructed using shards of colored glass retrieved from an alley. “We collected a lot of it and built these glass mobiles with copper wire and coat hangers. I took mine back to New York and put them in my window on West 16th Street in the Chelsea District. The sun would hit the mobile and send these moving colors all around the room. As a young girl, I found that to be a thing of beauty. There’s even a reference to the mobile in the song. It was a very young and lovely time…before I had a record deal.” The day after the Woodstock festival ended, Joni performed the song on The Dick Cavett Show. Check it out on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXe95iTtci0 Folks, we are desperately in need of some good news. Let’s honor Joni. Let’s make this happen!188 of 200 SignaturesCreated by Lennox Hannan

Saudi Arabia: Stop Torturing Women's Rights Activists! @RBAlSaudI can't believe that Saudi Arabia's brutal monarchy is STILL one of America's biggest allies. When will we cut the cord? The Saudi family dictatorship has imprisoned and tortured multiple women's rights activists. Male supporters of women's rights have also been jailed. Free these women and men NOW. Sources: 1. Stop Force-Feeding & Release Hunger Strikers in ICE DetentionTwo men detained at ICE’s El Paso Service Processing Center remain on hunger strike in protest of their prolonged detention, due process violations, and the threat of deportation to the country they fled. As of September 16, 2019 the men in El Paso are on the 70th day of their hunger strike. Through an open-ended court order obtained by ICE, the men in El Paso are being force-fed for weeks at a time, in violation of medical ethics and human rights standards. A third man was deported after being medically cleared despite being on hunger strike for 63 days. In federal court, one man challenging this torture testified about the pain of having a naso-gastric tube inserted into his body. Despite the pain, he asserted he would continue on hunger strike. "I want my freedom," one man said. "After that, I will drink any protein shake or eat anything that's given to me." Individuals held in detention should have the right to refuse food as a form of protest. The World Medical Association says that force-feeding hunger strikers is "unethical" and "never justified." Force-feeding procedures used in immigration detention are extremely painful—often intentionally so to break the protest—and can constitute cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment under international law. Hunger striking is often the only form of peaceful protest people in immigration detention have available to them to bring attention to what’s happening behind the walls of these immigration jails. These facilities create further obstacles to pursuing immigration relief, trapping people in a nearly impossible situation where they are detained with no end in sight and no possibility for release. ICE has the discretion to release anyone in their custody. Urge members of Congress to take immediate action to demand that ICE stop force-feeding these individuals and release them now from detention to their sponsors and supporters here in the U.S. If they are not released soon, their death is imminent.589 of 600 SignaturesCreated by Margaret Brown Vega, AVID

Require All Police Officers To Be Trained BEFORE Given PowersWhen police at Ball State University, Indiana killed an unarmed man, family and friends demanded to know why the officer didn’t use less lethal options such as pepper spray or de-escalation techniques. The answer is simple. The fully armed and empowered police officer had yet to attend basic training. Shockingly, allowing untrained officers to work is perfectly legal. These nonsensical laws allow police in 37 states to have full authority to detain, arrest, incarcerate, or even kill without ever attending basic police training. As a former police officer who attended academies in three states, I learned the value of good training. While I find much of the training in need of improvement, there is nothing more troubling to me that the fact that police officers in more than 2/3rd of the US are permitted to work before the attending the basic academy. These states include: AL, AK, AR, FL, HI, ID, IL, IN, IA, KS, KY, LA, ME, MD, MA, MS, MO, MT, NB, NV, NH, NJ, NM, NY, ND, OK, OR, SC, SD, TN, TX, VT, VA, WA, WV, WI and WY The consequences of untrained police officers are too grave. Not only are these practices unsafe for the community but for the officers as well. I hope you’ll join me by signing this petition for congress to eliminate these exceptions and require police to receive the training they need before giving them power over life and death.749 of 800 SignaturesCreated by Randy Shrewsberry, The Institute for Criminal Justice Training Reform

Allow an exception to the rule which prohibits naming a NY street after anyone who has not been d...There is already a petition to rename the stretch of 5th Avenue in front of Trump tower between 56th and 57th Streets be renamed "President Barack H. Obama Avenue." which currently has 428,245 signatures. This is a very popular idea which has widespread appeal- every day there are more people signing that petition and the goal keeps getting reset as the number continues to rise. This shows that there is already public support for this idea. People want this to happen. Unfortunately, unless an exception is made which will allow for the renaming to occur despite the fact that Obama is currently still living or the rule that requires a person to have been deceased for 2 or more yrs at the time of the renaming is changed and the restriction no longer applies this idea will never become a reality30 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Cheryl Morris Walder

Bring Back Sriracha Snack Mix CheezitsI took Sriracha Snack Mix Cheezits for granted. The day I noticed they weren’t on the shelf at my local Walmart, I could feel the worry beginning to build up within me. Each and every day I came back to see if they had returned.. I wasted hundreds of miles of gas driving store to store, frantically searching for my beloved treat. I would give up everything and everyone in my life to get just one hint of that sweet, spicy sriracha aroma. Please, for the sake of me and my mental wellbeing, sign this petition and bring back my one true love.13 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Gwendolyn
