But, the Trump Administration has announced a proposed rule that would strip every gray wolf in the lower 48 states of crucial Endangered Species Act protections. Wolves have only begun to recover in many parts of the country–and they are completely absent in others. The successful recovery of gray wolves in the Northern Rockies was only possible because of the strong protections of the Endangered Species Act. The Trump Administration's plan would jeopardize any future recovery by allowing states to manage gray wolves as game species. This would be a death sentence for many wolves. Wolves currently protected under the Endangered Species Act would likely face aggressive hunting and trapping immediately. The Trump administration has committed acts of racism and inhumanity with its perceived “border crises”. It is further indifferent to the opinions of a majority of our country that do not support the “wall”, detention of children and the overall lack of concern for the humanitarian crises it has created. Why then, therefore, is it not appropriate to condemn the Israeli government and its leaders for the continuing immoral treatment of the Palestinians, particularly in Gaza. They live in horrible conditions and in complete dependence on Israel for such things as electricity, water, sanitary conditions, along with closed borders and the ongoing retribution for their protests. Most of all they live without hope of having their own sovereign nation. Let’s not let this debate take what appears to be a turn to discourage free and open debate on important issues.

Senate President Ruggerio's undemocratic rule change (bill S0250A) allows the Senate president to kick senators off their favorite committee with a weak excuse, and bans Rhode Islanders from holding signs at Senate hearings. These alone are enough reason to oppose Ruggerio's proposal, and it has been condemned by Common Cause and Rhode Islanders for Reform. The bill undermines democracy in other ways too. (As I read it, it seems to rewrite debate rules so top senators get the lion's share of debate time while other senators' speaking time is limited, and it also lets reporters be barred from recording pictures of what happens in hearings, if the chair decides the pictures are a "distraction".) We don't need Rhode Island's government to become even more dominated by powerful insiders, which would allow more corrupt laws and projects to be rammed through.
