• Pinellas County: Save Bardmoor Open Air Recreational Space - Stop Overdevelopment
SAVE Bardmoor Golf & Tennis Club Petition To Stop Rezoning! We, the Citizens of Pinellas County and those of us who enjoy the open air recreational spaces, hereby submit this petition to stop any re-zoning attempts of the Bardmoor Golf and Tennis Club located at 8001 Cumberland Road, Seminole, Florida 33777 in unincorporated Pinellas County. The Bardmoor Golf and Tennis Club is currently zoned as recreational open with a county property use code of 3855 (Regulation, PAR 3 Golf Course). The Bardmoor Golf and Tennis Club represents a gem for our county and for our fellow residents. A change in zoning would lead to a lower quality of life for residents who live in neighborhoods surrounding the golf course and for our county as a whole. Rezoning would allow developers to change the Bardmoor Golf and Tennis Club from the 140 acres of rolling natural vegetation to hundreds of homes, townhomes and/or condos replacing grass with concrete and asphalt adding to the already dense population in the county and putting additional strain on our infrastructure with added homes and traffic. Re-zoning would disturb and disrupt the sensitive ecosystem that is home to many native Florida species of plant and wildlife. Rezoning would subject the entire community to a lengthy construction process where residents would be exposed to dangerous conditions, pollution, noise and a poor quality of life in general. We want Bardmoor Golf and Tennis Club to be saved so future generations can enjoy what this open green space has provided millions for the past 50+ years. We request the Pinellas Board of Commissioners/Zoning Board: • Deny any changes to the current Bardmoor Golf and Tennis Club Zoning. • Protect the Bardmoor Golf and Tennis Club’s “Green Open Space” and prohibit any construction of residences. • Maintain our “Green Open Space” so that generations of Eagles, Egrets, Otters, Ducks, Geese, Coyotes, Owls, and others may continue to have their rightful nesting and living areas. • Protect the Trees & Native Greenery that clean our air and provide habitat for the hundreds of animals that call it home. We strongly object to an out of state developer creating a Community Development District where the Bardmoor community would be taxed in order to pay for construction of the Developer’s project.

  • GOP Senators: REJECT Trump’s national emergency
This is a gut check moment for every lawmaker who says they care about the rule of law. When Donald Trump failed to get his border wall built through the democratic process, he decided to undermine the checks and balances that have protected our nation for centuries -- declaring a phony “national emergency” to pay for it. In response to this brazen attack on the rule of law, House Democrats introduced and passed a resolution to block Trump’s declaration that was supported by 13 House Republicans. The Senate's resolution is also gaining bipartisan support, as three Republican senators have already signed on. Now, we just need ONE more Senate Republican to put country before party -- and we’ll have the votes we need to reject Trump’s “national emergency.” Time and time again, Mitt Romney, Lindsey Graham, and other GOP senators have spoken out against Trump’s lawlessness -- and now, the nation is watching to see if they will back those words up with action when it matters most. We cannot let our president blatantly ignore our democratic system to fund his anti-immigrant agenda. Add your name and demand GOP Senators take a stand for the rule of law.

  • All content shall be in English
As a HUMAN being, I only speak, and read, HUMAN English. To me, it is totally INSULTING to have web-site creation tools tell me "It does not matter if you paid your fee's, and approved billing, until you can tell us your "url", "platform", SEO, "system integration software", and so on, your site will NOT go on-line. All that HUMANS should have to provide, to such sites is 1) Owners name, 2) proposed site name, 3) owners billing information, 4) site content (for search engines), and agree to pay normal "hosting" fee's, to the "hosting web-site". HUMANS should NOT be required to obtain computer programming degree's, just to have content, on-line. HUMANS should provide basic information, and let the programmers hhandle the "coding".

  • Opposition to High-Density Residential Zoning
Residents of the Twin Oaks, Brighten Lane, and Oak Creek Canyon Communities are concerned that 50 units on a 1.7-acre parcel of land will increase our low-density population, dramatically increase traffic in an already congested area, which will lead to more accidents, injuries, and potential fatalities.

  • Reliable School Bus Service for Mount Pleasant
Durham Bus Company has failed to fulfill the obligation of its contract for many years. This inability to provide basic bus services to the Mount Pleasant school zones is greatly disrupting the education of our students. Late and or no-show buses have created a stressful and hectic environment for families all over the county. It is estimated that over 1000 families have chosen to not use the bus service at all even though they would like to. This has resulted in a massive traffic issue in the Park West, Dunes West, and Carolina Park area. Many families do not have the option to drive their students to school, especially with a last minute notice. This causes parents and students an excessive amount of stress twice a day. The community has exhausted all effects to aid the bus company in solving this issue. Parents have organized several attempts to reach out to CCSD and Durham Bus Company, to offer parent support and professional advice as well as problem-solving strategies. Durham and CCSD have failed to collaborate with parents on this pressing issue. We are hereby requesting that CCSD revoke the contract with Durham Bus Company on the grounds that the basic needs of the contract have not been met. Numerous families report only receiving on-time bus service 3 times a week. If parents choose to drive the students after waiting at the bus stop for an extended amount of time, the student is given a tardy due to the bus company's incompetence. On many occasions, parents are dealing with multiple "no-show buses" and must scramble to drive students to multiple schools. Students are overwhelmed with the stress of not knowing if they will have a bus to take them home. Although some of the time a bus returns late, this often causes the students to miss out on valuable education time. This has effects on before and after-school activities as well. We parents and students find Durham Bus Company and the Charleston County School board incompetent in the area of transportation. Durham and CCSD have continued to blame the issue on a lack of drivers. This is not solely the cause. Inadequate management has set a standard of incompetence. Drivers have reached out to parents explaining that the buses are unreliable and unsafely mismanaged. Drivers who work multiple jobs and drive from a great distance, broken down busses, and extra routes have caused some drivers to lose their primary jobs. Durham Bus Company continues to recruit from the same demographic, despite recommendations to alter their hiring strategies to local retirees and churches and organizations in Mt. Pleasant. Under the current contract, Durham Bus Company is obligated to have a 10% backup staff available for sick or late drivers. This has not been met in years, as far as we can tell. It is our understanding that CCSD has been withholding funds from Durham due to this lack of service. No explanation as to where those funds have gone has been made available. Parents spend countless hours calling and emailing in an effort to solve this ongoing crisis. Many of our students will be of driving age soon, yet overcrowded schools lack adequate parking and our children are not likely to obtain a parking pass, leaving the bus as the primary option. Parents have stressed that the bus issue has affected their own employment status as well. Our families deserve better than this. The only alternative solution that we find acceptable is for Mount Pleasant to be removed from the existing contract and a new contract with an alternative bus company be established. If an alternative bus company is not willing to accept a contract with Mount Pleasant on the grounds that CCSD busses are inadequate, then those busses should be sold or relocated to other areas with lower student demand. This would allow for a new contract with a competing company to supply our growing Mount Pleasant with drivers and buses. We are asking for this new contract to be in place before the end of the 2018-2019 school year. Please support our students and families.

  • Child Care Assistance for College Students
As Associate Dean of Student Life at Rhode Island College and Advisor of the Student-Parent Association, I have seen students struggle to balance paying for child care and taking classes - many of them end up dropping out or taking longer to graduate as they have to go part time or take a few semesters off. Rhode Island College currently has approximately 500 students with children, some of whom could benefit from the Child Care Assistance Program. By enabling these students to continue their studies and graduate, we are helping ensure students are able to support themselves and their families now and in the future.

  • Protect voters nationwide -- pass the Voting Rights Advancement Act
Our right to vote is fundamental to our democracy -- but right now, it's in jeopardy. The Voting Rights Act, one of our nation’s proudest civil rights achievements, used to protect us from targeted voter suppression laws. States and counties with a history of discrimination had to pre-approve any changes to their voting rules with the Department of Justice -- which stopped thousands of dangerous provisions from taking effect. But the Supreme Court gutted that pre-clearance requirement in 2013 -- inviting opportunistic politicians to attack voters’ rights, pass new laws that would have never stood up to review, and make it harder for Americans to vote. We’ve especially seen the impacts of this decision in states like Georgia, where voter suppression efforts plagued the 2018 election. Congress must use its legislative power to remedy the Supreme Court’s decision and pass the Voting Rights Advancement Act -- a new, updated Voting Rights Act that protects every eligible American’s right to be heard. Add your name and demand Congress take a stand for voters.
