Repave Telegraph AveFor over 10 years, the Temescal Telegraph Business Improvement District (TTBID) has been trying to get the City of Oakland to repave Telegraph Ave. between 45th and 51st Streets. The City itself has ranked this street as one of the worst streets in the city (ranked as Poor/Failing at <30, when 100 is the top score). Now, this stretch of Telegraph Ave is barely passable, with pedestrians and bicyclists hurt frequently and causing costly repairs to vehicles. The hazardous state of the road is a threat to the safety of the Oakland community. Telegraph Ave between 45th Street and 51st St., one of Oakland’s major thoroughfares, is in the heart of a bustling commercial district. The crumbling street has over 25,000 cars per day, 4 freeway on and off ramps, thousands of bicyclists and pedestrians and a major AC Transit bus line. The State just increased gas taxes to increase funding for things like street repair, and a year ago Oakland’s voters approved a $600 million bond issue for the same purpose. It is simply inexcusable that this key part of a major thoroughfare is left to crumble year after year after year. It’s time to pave this section of Telegraph now.707 of 800 SignaturesCreated by Temescal Telegraph BID

Demand No Guns in SchoolsMore guns in our schools won't make them safer--especially for Black children who are already criminalized and violated inside and outside of schools. At a young age, Black students are already heavily policed by the presence of police officers in the school buildings, metal detectors, and a system of punitive discipline that funnels them through the school-prison pipeline. Imagine what could happen when the same teacher that disproportionately punishes Black children for their behavior is armed with a gun. That reality is too much to bear. This ridiculous and dangerous response is sadly not new. After the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting in Newtown, resulting in the death of 20 children and six adults, the NRA introduced a new strategy to exploit school shootings to benefit the gun industry by driving up gun sales. According to NCES statistics, Trump's plan would require arming up to 700,000 more people in schools with guns. This terrible idea has nothing to do with safety, it's about making money--and exploiting of the families who've lost their loved ones in tragedy. Bills are popping up in state legislatures already to approve measures that would arm teachers. That's why we all must stand together and show these lawmakers, and Trump, that we will not allow gun companies get rich while putting our children in danger. Pink Slips in ScrantonThe Pennsylvania auditor general cited the Scranton School District as the "worst audit" he has ever seen. The district's response is to furlough 98 teachers, including: Librarians (all), Health/Physical Education, Art, English, Science, Special Education, Mathematics, Family Consumer Science, Music and Industrial Arts On Feb. 9, 2018, the general counsel of the governor’s office sent a letter to the Scranton School District saying, "... the District [must] immediately discontinue and reverse any action to suspend any professional employee. ..." Further, if the district refuses to comply, then it would "... lead to the Department taking action to protect the students and employees of the District." The Scranton School District has chosen to ignore the governor! Sign this petition demanding that the Scranton School District board of directors follow the recommendation of the Office of General Counsel and immediately reinstate the 98 educators who received pink slips.377 of 400 SignaturesCreated by Asher Huey

Veto S.B.234S04, Inland Port AuthorityLET'S KEEP THE PRESSURE ON GOVERNOR HERBERT AND LET HIM KNOW WE WON'T BE GOING AWAY! WE WILL HOLD HIM ACCOUNTABLE! The Governor signed this bill Friday afternoon (3/9/18) and issued a statement saying that he will be calling a special spring session to address at least four main City and Citizen issues and concerns. including the appeals process, Tax increment issues, jurisdictional boundary adjustments & a more equitable board composition. The final version of this bill was passed in the House 6 minutes after it was introduced at the 11th hour of the legislative session. It strips away City authority, ignoring the results of lengthy good faith negotiations with Salt Lake City Corp. This bill allows the States Port Authority to conduct a huge land grab of nearly 20,000 acres, nearly one-third of the lands in Salt Lake City. The bill effectively undercuts local control by handing the control over to an unelected, unaccountable board authority that is allowed to take 100% of the tax increment to spend as they please without providing revenue to support municipal services. This leaves Salt Lake City residents and taxpayers to foot the bill for the municipal services of the Port. Please sign and SHARE this petition to KEEP THE PRESSURE ON GOVERNOR HERBERT AND LET HIM KNOW WE WON'T BE GOING AWAY! WE WILL HOLD HIM ACCOUNTABLE! to use the upcoming special session to collaborate and truly incorporate the concerns of ALL stakeholders to create an Inland Port project that will be equitable for all parties.88 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Terry Thomas

Trader Joe’s: Stop confining animals in their own feces!Direct Action Everywhere (DxE) recently investigated a Trader Joe’s farm and found hens who were forced to feed on their own waste as they languished inside of massive manure pits with no access to food or water. Even at supposedly ‘humane’ farms like this one, DxE found dead hens who had likely starved to death. DxE’s open rescue team found Lucy trapped in a pile of feces without access to food or water, and they brought Lucy to receive the medical care she needed. She is now living safe and happy at a sanctuary. Find out more at TraderJoesWasteland.com.1,358 of 2,000 SignaturesCreated by Direct Action Everywhere

IBWC: Save San Diego's Beaches from SewageDear Commissioner Edward Drusina, Over the last 30 years, there has been an ongoing environmental crisis on the border of San Diego and Tijuana, Mexico. Millions of gallons of sewage consistently spill into the ocean and remain unchecked by both United States and Mexican authorities. The problem reached its peak a year ago, when in February 2017 an estimated 28-256 million gallons of raw sewage spilled from the Tijuana River into the Pacific Ocean, as stated in the International Boundary and Water Commission reports. The constant threat of spills is affecting the Imperial Beach, Chula Vista, Coronado and San Diego beach communities. Southern California relies on its beaches as an economic driver and having beaches closed hundreds of days out of the year has a negative impact on the entire region. For those who decide to venture into the polluted ocean, they are constantly plagued by ear, skin and respiratory infections. Not only do the sewage spills affect our beaches and tourist attractions, but they also put out national security at risk. Due to the Tijuana River’s closeness to the United States/Mexico Border, United States Border Patrol agents are impacted while on duty. Agents’ health is at risk, and day after day they are coming down with unknown skin and respiratory infections caused by their proximity and exposure to these spills. According to Christopher Harris, a union representative for National Border Patrol Council’s Local 1613, at least 83 agents reported sewage-related illnesses. We urge you to honor your role stated Article 3 of the Treaty of February 3, 1944, which enables the International Boundary and Water Commission “to give preferential attention to the solution of all border sanitation problems.” The constant runoff of raw sewage from the Tijuana River into San Diego would qualify as a border sanitation problem, and it is up to you to address this and hold your Mexican counterpart, Roberto Fernando Salmón Castelo, director general of the Comisión Internacional de Límites y Aguas, accountable. The current inaction on the part of the International Boundary and Water Commission is unacceptable. The entire Southern California region is suffering because of this environmental and health crisis. Honor your word. Enforce Article 3.302 of 400 SignaturesCreated by SDSU against sewage

Coalition Against Sex TraffickingOver 400,000 children are currently being victimized by sex trafficking in the United States. At risk youth such as LGTBQ, runways, and foster youth are targets for this type of exploitation. Our youth should be protected in this country and not targeted and used to sex trafficking in our own backyard.57 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Cristiana Schneiderhan

Conversion Therapy with Minors in MichiganI am a student at Eastern Michigan University in the Masters of Social Work Program. I am starting this petition in support of Rep. Zempke's bill to end conversion therapy by mental health professionals in the state of Michigan. The bill was introduced on February 13th 2018 for the 3rd time. Conversion therapy has no scientific basis and has many potential risks for clients, including depression, anxiety, social isolation and self-destructive behavior. According to many in the mental health community, sexual orientation and expressions of gender identity occur naturally therefore, there is no reason sexual orientation needs to be changed especially with methods proven to be harmful. Please help support the LBGTQ community in our state.175 of 200 SignaturesCreated by Lisa Eack
