The National Rifle Association (NRA) is an extremist organization that opposes virtually every common-sense gun safety regulation, even ones supported by most gun owners. But the NRA continues to be powerful, because it boasts over 5 million members -- members who enjoy various corporate discounts when they pay their annual $40 membership fee. For example, car rental companies like Hertz, Avis & Budget each offer 25% discounts to NRA members. Federal Express gives NRA members a 26% discount on shipping charges. We cannot influence the NRA, but we can put pressure on corporate sponsors to divest from the NRA and make its membership less valuable. Already, we are seeing changes. For years, the First National Bank of Omaha offered the "official credit card of the NRA." On February 22, due to consumer pressure, they announced it was being discontinued. The Parkland, Florida school shooting was an unspeakable tragedy that killed 17 students & teachers. The kids who survived this massacre are refusing to allow adult cynicism convince them that we will never pass gun safety reform. They are starting to organize politically, so now Republican politicians and NRA apologists want to discredit them. Yes, seriously. How low can they go in attacking survivors? Former Congressman Jack Kingston called them stooges for "left-wing groups who have an agenda," and Donald Trump Jr. has chimed in too. Considering the most recent instances of gun violence, there needs to be a renewed sense of urgency on an issue concerning safety and security. Guns, concealed and restricted in certain spaces, have no place on college campuses.

Arming underpaid teachers who are untrained for hazardous duty to protect students is just another desperate attempt by the NRA and its paid supporters in positions of power throughout state and federal government to change the subject from our real need for stronger gun laws and responsible restrictions to increase safety across America and especially for our children in schools! What will the NRA use as an excuse when a teacher misfires and kills students or a SWAT team mistakes a teacher with a gun for a shooter? Senator Grantham refuses to take action against sexual harassment in the Capitol and expel the Senators, who have been found by a third party that the accusations of sexual harassment are credible. Senator Aguilar has introduced a Resolution to demand the expulsion of Senator Baumgardner, and Senator Grantham is abusing his position of authority and blocking the reading across the desk of the Resolution to expel Senator Baumgardner.

Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee say they have obtained documents that suggest Russia used the National Rifle Association (NRA) to help President Trump's 2016 campaign. The NRA has too much influence over our elected politicians. Where is all their money coming from? Is Russia a prime contributor and have they infiltrated the NRA? Because the NRA refuses to even discuss common sense gun laws, they are a threat to national security. Our FBI needs to look into the leadership and finances of the NRA. I am a gun owner but I don't believe I need to be a member of an organization like the NRA to be protected by the 2nd amendment. That amendment has been around since the constitution was adopted. I don't buy the scare tactics of the NRA.

Our students have been threatened on more than one occasion and the shooting deaths in our schools nationally are on the rise.

The courageous students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, are inspiring our nation with their determination to end senseless and preventable gun violence in the U.S. These students are survivors of the 17th shooting on a U.S. school campus in the first 43 days of 2018. They are demanding the immediate passage of commonsense gun safety laws—and are fearlessly calling out all lawmakers who answer their rightful demands with hollow promises. These students will not be silenced by a mounting right-wing media attack campaign to smear them personally and spread lies about their efforts. They are rejecting false solutions offered by Trump and lawmakers, such as a recent Trump suggestion to arm educators in schools. The Parkland students are standing strong, at the center of a powerful, emergent movement that's applying necessary and strategic pressure on Congress and Donald Trump. They are fighting for their safety. Our safety. Let's make sure they and federal lawmakers know that Americans across the country are standing shoulder to shoulder with the students, promising as they are to not yield until our schools and communities are safe from gun violence. Together, We say: YES to commonsense gun laws. And NO to the NRA and cowardly inaction by federal lawmakers. We say: Parkland students, we are with you, now and always!

Sure, there will be teachers who are comfortable and confident with special training and having a hand gun at school but the reality is, the majority will not, and unfortunately in this day and age, a hand gun really isn't enough, since AR-15's are the gun of choice for these mass murderers. I will bet that the majority of our teachers would rather just teach, and would prefer to leave the job of security to our law enforcement. Why can't we have a certain number of police assigned to each and every public school...immediately?! Yes, special Federal Funding will need to be provided. I say, Federal Funding, because in this case, it can't be left up to the states or local decision makers. This is too big. While we are all hashing-it-out about background checks, gun control, and mental health, can we all agree to immediately protect our children and teachers in our schools?

Global warming and climate change are existential issues that will impact us all, regardless of our political views. We must demand that those entrusted to represent and to protect us do so. We need to save the planet for our children and future generations.
