The Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act last Summer. We are asking members of Congress to restore the Voting Rights Act and to protect the rights of all voters across the country, especially in Southern states like Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas. The Justice Department should retain the right to review any challenge to an individuals right to vote or any redrawing of District Lines on the state level for the purpose of establishing outlined voting patterns in a particular district. This law should be particularly applied to states that have a history of unfairness, oppression, racial segregation or resistance to providing racial minorities equal protection under the law.

Perhaps the most important "right" people have is the right to vote. Actions being taken to reduce those rights simply reduce the ideals of the American Political System. Making sure the votes of all voters are counted and that they are able to cast their ballots without difficulty is a principle of the electoral process that must be upheld to make sure our elections are free and fair. Attempts to undermine voting rights will only cause voters to question the validity of elections. In order to make sure future electoral problems don't happen a new Voting Rights Act must be passed to make sure our elections can be free and fair for future generations to come.

To increase awareness of policies that are being offered in certain states that will penalize certain populations, who rightfully want to vote in elections. Those populations have been known to lean Democratic in elections. The revised VRA will encourage powerful organizations, which lean Republican, to finance and influence these policies.

Late last week, Representatives Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) and John Conyers (D-MI) and Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) introduced new legislation—the Voting Rights Amendment Act of 2014—that would strengthen the Voting Rights Act. Voter protections long in place have been destroyed recently, and need to be restored, and perhaps fortified, to ensure that ALL legitimate voters have the equal rights guarenteed by the U.S. Constitution.
