This fall, Lionsgate Entertainment is planning to release "Ender's Game," a film based on Orson Scott Card's novel of the same name. Mr. Card, who is also one of the film's producers, has been an avowed opponent of LGBT rights—particularly marriage equality. He even sat on the Board of the National Organization for Marriage, which has fought against marriage equality in several states. Help show Lionsgate and other major studios that we refuse to let our money go to support homophobia and discrimination!

Among the basic foundations of American democracy are: No taxation without representation; a still-unrealized ideal which expands voting rights and opportunities rather than limiting or eliminating them; and Constitutional amendments which guarantee the rights to freedom of expression, opinion, and representation (one person, one vote) at both the state and federal levels. Gerrymandering is a blatant attempt to negate any or all of these American rights and privileges, and should be declared a violation of federal law.

Many people don't have houses, shelters are overflowing, & many artists & other working people & people who lost their homes in the housing collapse are being sent to jail & fined for sleeping in their vehicles. It is reasonable for police to run search warrants, but it is discrimination to penalize not owning private property.

Because this Voters I.D. Law is discriminatory and will disenfranchise Blacks, Hispanics and Asians. Blacks and Whites died for us to have this right.

The US Department of Justice has decided to challenge anti-voting laws in Texas. Please sign this petition to encourage US-DOJ to take action in North Carolina, too! North Carolina’s new anti-voting monster law has many features that seem designed to make voting harder for certain groups [see www.democracy-nc.org]. For example, eliminating pre-registration for teenagers, ending Same-Day Registration, and refusing student IDs will push down voting by young people. Poor women will face new barriers since women are nearly two thirds of the voters who don’t have a NC photo ID, according to the State Board of Elections. African Americans are especially hit hard: They are 50% more likely than whites to register by using Same-Day Registration, to vote by using Straight Ticket Voting, and to not have a NC photo ID. In addition to requiring a photo ID, the new law ends SDR and STV! On the other hand, whites are 60% more likely to use mail-in absentee ballots – and the new law makes forms to get mail-in ballots easier to obtain! Even though a recent US Supreme Court decision undermines part of the Voting Rights Act, other sections remain in force. The Justice Department aims to use those sections to stop the discriminatory election changes in Texas. In taking the action, US Attorney General Eric Holder said, the Department is “determined to use every tool at our disposal to stand against discrimination wherever it is found.” Please sign the petition to urge Holder to take action in North Carolina - and then forward it to others. On August 21, U.S. citizen Chelsea Manning - formerly Bradley Manning - was sentenced to 35 years in prison for leaking classified information to the public about the killing of civilians in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan; drone strikes in Yemen; torture in Guantanamo, Iraq, and Egypt; the coup in Honduras; corruption in Tunisia, the U.S. use of cluster bombs, and the blockade of Gaza, Manning has already served more than three years in pre-trial detention, including 11 months in conditions described by the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture as cruel and inhumane. Now that PFC Bradley Manning has been tried and sentenced to 35 years, it is time to begin the process for a Presidential pardon.

In response to a recent decision that denies his office participation in a federal deportation program that is slowly being phased out, Sheriff JJ Jones released an alarming statement on his website. He said: "I will continue to enforce these federal immigration violations with or without the help of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. If need be, I will stack these violators like cordwood in the Knox County jail..." The fact that he was denied is partly because of massive community pressure to keep him from getting additional immigration powers when he already has a troubled past and a poor relationship with the immigrant community. Now he has publicly vowed to unconstitutionally detain immigrants and stack them in his jail. His statements blatantly expose a dangerously hostile attitude toward immigrants and high likelihood of racial bias in his policing. Join Knoxville residents in calling on the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate Sheriff JJ Jones' office for racial bias and patterns of targeting immigrant community members. Our country doesn't need a "new Arpaio" like the one in Arizona - sign today and ask the DOJ to investigate.

As we live in the aftermath of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin’s unexpected death at the hands of George Zimmerman, I want to encourage each and every one of you to use your voice for change. Millions of people across the nation witnessed the injustice of Zimmerman’s subsequent acquittal of all charges in trial—something we must fight to prevent from happening again. Pennsylvania is the only state in the northeast where it is legal to discriminate against LGBT people. LGBT people can be fired, denied housing, credit or even a motel room simply on the basis of their sexual orientation, gender identity or expression. Thirteen Democratic State Representatives in PA have not signed on to HB 300, the bill to end legal discrimination against LGBT people. If these 13 joined as co-sponsors we would have a majority in support of the bill. Please send a message to all of them that it is outrageous that they are not sponsoring HB 300.
