• Replace Street and Highway Incandescent Bulbs with Light Emmitting Diodes (L.E.D.'s)
L.E.D.'s use less energy, are brighter, and have no toxic components, unlike incandescent and Compact Fluorescent (CFL) bulbs. This will save energy while providing a brighter and cleaner light with no environmental impact .

  • Demand a Moratorium on oil and gas leasing in the North Fork Valley of Colorado
Colorado has seen a unprecedented boom in gas drilling, much of this using potentially risky production techniques such as fracking. Living communities all across the state have been significantly impacted and many heavily damaged by these activities. The North Fork Valley is famous for its agriculture, viticulture, cheese production and ranching, much of an organic nature. 30,000 acres are slated to be leased all around this beautiful valley, including in its vital watersheds and directly above many viable agricultural areas. We demand that the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) recognize the unique characteristics of this valley and place a moratorium on leasing in and around it at least until the BLM completes the full Resource Management Plan for the region.

  • WalkBikeTransit Pledge
Transportation is the fastest growing source of greenhouse gases in the United States. Biking, walking, taking the train or bus, and using other, more sustainable forms of transportation are healthier and more affordable than driving, and will reduce our contribution to climate change and global food insecurity. We are pledging to leave our cars at home and use sustainable transportation at least once a week. We are also calling on Governor Malloy to join us by supporting and funding sustainable transportation options. *WalkBikeTransit is a grassroots campaign dedicated to reducing local contributions to global climate change and food insecurity. For more information see www.newhavenleon.org/earthathon. To volunteer, email [email protected].

  • Stop the styrofoam Publix: Use sustainable packaging for veggies
Publix supermarkets continue to package numerous vegetables and fruits in Styrofoam tray packaging. As the largest supermarket chain in Florida, this creates a large amount of non-recyclable trash. Please join me in urging Publix to switch to recyclable and sustainable packaging for all of its produce.

  • Stop Subsidizing Conventional Farming, Subsidize Organic Instead
Billions of tax dollars are spent on farm subsidies every year. While these subsidies may originally have helped small farmers, they are now helping huge factory farms and big business to poison the American population with toxic food like corn fed beef, polyunsaturated vegetable oils, high fructose corn syrup and corn, soy and wheat fillers. The economic and health consequences of this are huge. If we took the current funding for farm subsidies and re-directed this to subsidizing organic farming instead, this would help the environment and economy by supporting small, sustainable farming practices, and improve our national health by providing affordable access to healthy food to American families.

  • Freedom of the Press vs. Big Oil
Recent Front Page of New York Times presented article in a series regarding unreported dangers of hydro-fracking for methane gas 2 miles under the surface of populated areas. In the "gold" rush to shatter the bedrock of Pennsylvania and New York to gather tiny pockets of gas, the industry is risking the destruction of human habitation above. Money cannot trump life...again.

  • Protect Kids from Nuclear Radiation - Club Iwate Prefecture
Please help us protect our children. It is disturbing that so little has been done to reduce the radiation exposure to children in Iwate. We are to present a petition to the Mayor of Morioka-City to demand countermeasures against the nuclear radiation caused by the radioactive leak from the Fukushima reactors. The original website link for the petition (in Japanese) is as follows: http://ameblo.jp/miraieforchildren-iwate/entry-11076647545.html

  • Protect our freshwater!
Hydraulic fracturing must be banned to protect the largest source of above-ground freshwater in the world, the Great Lakes and their feeder water system inside the State of Michigan, from use by hydraulic fracturing companies seeking to drill for natural gas in Michigan shale. Every time a well is "fracked" 3 to 5 or more million(Chesapeake Energy states 5 million is average) gallons of water are poisoned and lost to us forever. Chesapeake also says, "Use of this water in natural gas and oil operations is a one-time use, and does not represent a long-term commitment of the resource. Other water users typically consume water for years, decades or even longer. How Much Is 5 Million Gallons? The 5 million gallons of water needed to drill and fracture a typical deep shale gas or oil well is equivalent to the amount of water consumed by: New York City in approximately seven minutes A 1,000 megawatt coal-fired power plant in 12 hours A golf course in 25 days 7.5 acres of corn in a season While these represent continuing consumption, the water used for a natural gas or oil well is a one-time use." The only problem with their information is that water used for those things is RETURNED TO THE WATER CYCLE for our use again. Their "one-time use" is a permanent loss of water. When they add frack chemicals to it, it is gone. Lost...lost....lost.

  • CLOSE THE HALLIBURTON LOOPHOLE
In 2005 , behind closed doors, Dick Cheney, former CEO of Halliburton, exempted the Gas and Oil Industries from the Clean Air and Clean Water Act. Clean air and clean water is a basic human right which no man has the right to take away from another man. This action was knowingly carried out in order to create the unregulated situation we are in today, where these industries are free to poison our air and inject toxic chemicals into the earth through Hydro Fracking and other extraction techniques . If it cannot be done safely, it cannot be done at all.

  • Save Canton Lake!
Over 20,000 residents of Canton and neighboring communities rely on Canton Lake for clean drinking water, and the West and Middle Branches of Copperas Creek provide some of the highest quality wildlife habitat, hunting, and fishing left in Fulton County. But the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has tentatively decided to issue water pollution permits for a 1,084 acre strip coal mine that would send additional pollution into Canton Lake and Copperas Creek, and allow for the destruction of miles of tributary streams. Even worse, the applicant is the same group responsible for the disastrous Industry Mine in McDonough and Schuyler Counties – which has violated the Clean Water Act by discharging polluted water at levels above its permit over 300 times since 2003! Despite ongoing legal action by the Illinois Attorney General’s Office and widespread local opposition the Industry Mine is still not complying with the law. How can Illinois EPA even consider issuing a permit to a company with such a bad record so close to a source of clean drinking water? Take Action Now! 1. Sign the petition and tell Governor Quinn and Illinois EPA not to issue permits that threaten clean drinking water! No permits for mining companies that are already violating the Clean Water Act. 2. Join Us At The Meeting CACEI December Meeting 10:00 am, December 3, 2011 and at the Fulton County Health Department Public Hearing on North Canton Mine Water Permits at 5:00 pm on December 6, 2011 at the Donaldson Center This petition and associated signatures will be forwarded to Gov. Quinn and Illinois EPA as part of our campaign to protect Canton Lake and Copperas Creek from strip mining pollution. By submitting this form, your name and address will be filed with a public agency and become public record. We will not use your personal information for any other purpose.
