• Donald Trump: Denounce Hate Speech
As a Muslim and Marine who served in Iraq, I was outraged to watch Carl Higbie on CNN calling my faith "a political ideology masquerading as a religion.” Higbie then went on to endorse a range of war crimes, including the murder of Muslim civilians. Donald Trump: if you want to be the next Commander in Chief, you must denounce this extremist hate speech.

  • Media: Do not prematurely declare a Democratic nominee on June 7.
It is now virtually impossible for either Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders to officially win the Democratic nomination before the Democratic convention. In order for either candidate to reach the required number of delegates to claim the nomination, they will need superdelegates -- a group of delegates that will not be officially awarded to either candidate until the Democratic National Convention is held at the end of July. That means a contested convention -- and a vigorous debate over the values and priorities of the Democratic Party -- is now assured. But despite that fact, on June 7 mainstream media outlets are planning to declare Hillary Clinton the winner. How? By combining the delegates she wins from that day's primaries with an unofficial tally of superdelegates who have informally committed to Hillary Clinton based on unofficial polls and declarations of support. This is a profoundly misleading and anti-Democratic move by mainstream media outlets, and it could affect the real-time results of the California Democratic primary election taking place on June 7 -- a primary that could have a dramatic effect on the Democratic nomination. If Hillary Clinton is falsely declared the winner at 8pm Eastern time -- as media outlets are planning to do -- voter turnout in California could be significantly depressed, which could dramatically alter the outcome in a race that now appears to be a dead heat. Tell the mainstream media to resist the temptation to feed the news cycle with superficial and misleading horse-race journalism and let democracy take its course. Sign the petition and tell national media outlets: Do not falsely declare a Democratic nominee on June 7.

  • Urge Los Angeles Mayor to ban known carcinogen Round-Up from being sprayed on public parks
Several lawsuits have recently been filed against Monsanto, the maker of glyphosate herbicides (trade name "Roundup") for allegedly causing cancer. An MIT researcher has correlated rising glyphosate use with rising rates of autism in children. Round-Up has also been implicated in the death of the bees, (Colony Collapse Disorder). Nevertheless, the Los Angeles Department of Parks and Rec is still spraying glyphosate all over public parks. It's most dangerous to pregnant women because it disrupts fetal development. The LA Department of Parks and Rec is only regulated by the Mayor's office. There are no regulations in place to determine the amount of Round-Up the Department of Parks and Rec can spray. According to a recent article in The Palisades News " UCLA professor emeritus John Froines, who lives in Santa Monica, said the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the “most prestigious body in the world on carcinogens,” has labeled Roundup’s glyphosate a carcinogen. “If they say it’s a carcinogen, you can be sure it is,” IARC’s determination was based on the review of more than 1,000 studies, according to its website. Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in particular is related to glyphosate. The site uses the phrase “probable carcinogen,” which Froines said government agencies treat as meaning a carcinogen.

  • Save UMass Boston and Its Urban Mission: NO to Increased Class Sizes, Tuition Hikes, and Cuts t...
This petition was created in opposition to austerity measures announced by the UMass Boston administration in May 2016. Since then, some of these measures have been enacted, including a tuition hike of 5.7% (amounting to $753 for in-state students, more for out-of-state and international students) and cancellation of some previously scheduled courses. Moreover, the State Legislature passed only a minimal increase in funding--perpetuating its chronic underfunding of public higher education in Massachusetts. Although a number of non-tenure track faculty have been reappointed for the fall semester, the fight to save UMB is far from over. Further tuition hikes, increased class sizes, and cutbacks to faculty, staff, and programs are likely if we do not continue to advocate for UMB’s urban mission as well as full state funding of public higher education.

  • .@StateDept: Express Concern About Imprisoned Astrophysicist
On May 27, Haaretz reported [1] that the Israeli military would free imprisoned astrophysicist Imad Barghouthi, apparently detained for posts on Facebook, following an international campaign of scientists and an Israeli military appeals court ruling that Barghouthi posed no danger and should be released. But the military appeals court decision has now apparently been overturned by the Israeli military. [2] Urge Members of Congress to press the State Department to express concern about the imprisonment of astrophysicist Imad Barghouthi by signing our petition. • Healthy and Safe School Start Times for Students in Bucks County, PA
In August of 2014, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) came out with a recommendation that high schools and middle schools start no earlier than 8:30 am. Decades of sleep research has shown that sleep cycles shift when students enter adolescence and that their very biology dictates that they stay up later and sleep later. As a result, many teens are operating on a sleep deficit when school start times are too early. Early school start times for teens have been shown to have a negative impact on safety, health, and well-being: • Increased risk of sports injuries • Increased risk of obesity and diabetes • Negative impact on stress, depression, and other mental health concerns • Increased risk of car crashes • Increase in risky behavior and impaired judgement School districts around the country that have changed to a later start time for middle school and high school have seen positive outcomes: • Reduced tardiness • Fewer absences • Higher test scores on national achievement tests • Fewer car crashes • Better overall health and less depression • Reduced use of caffeine, alcohol, tobacco, and other substances. In addition to the AAP, this recommendation for healthy school start times has been supported by the Centers for Disease Control, the National Education Association, the National Sleep Foundation, the National Association of School Nurses, the Society of Pediatric Nurses, the Pennsylvania Psychological Association, the Association of School Psychologists of Pennsylvania, and many other health and educational organizations. Changing school start times is feasible. Hundreds of school communities in 44 states have found ways to make this happen by prioritizing health and learning. http://www.startschoollater.net/success-stories.html By signing this petition, you are not endorsing any particular solution to this problem. All you are doing is asking the school boards and administrators of schools in Bucks County, PA to begin the process of investigating a way to implement healthy and safe school start times for all students.

  • Keep Drillers Out of Big Cypress!
The Everglades and Big Cypress are beautiful landmarks – and if you’ve been there, you know why it’s so important to protect them. Big Cypress is also the home to a rich biodiversity, including nine endangered species. That’s why in 1974, it became one of the first national preserves in the country. But rather than protecting Florida’s wilderness and wildlife, the National Park Service has approved a plan by a Texas company to explore oil and gas deposits within Big Cypress. This decision is completely irresponsible and threatens irreparable damage to our ecosystems. Paving the way for drilling in Big Cypress goes against the very purpose of the National Park Service.

  • Blu-Birds v. Pure Traverse City
These military demonstration teams draw tens of thousands of visitors to an already overcrowded city during the annual Cherry Festival. The planes emit tons of CO2, violate the city noise ordinance, disturb the young, old and those with PTSD and they cost taxpayers over $100 million per year. Further, the crowds overextend our first responders and overtax our limited infrastructure. Stand with me in asking the city commission to restore a measure of purity to our town.

  • Boycott Home Depot (Co-founder supports Trump)
The Hispanic and Latino community are a huge clientele and work force of Home Depot, affording Home Depot in reaching the pinnacle of a successful corporation. For one of the co-founders, Bernie Marcus, to support a xenophobic, misogynistic, racist bigot like Donald Trump and stand by his divisive, hateful rhetoric is beyond acceptable and appalling. We will stand up and speak up, hitting Home Depot where it hurts the most: in their stock value, reputation, and pocket book. Si se puede!
