Our neighborhood has been cleared of more than forty trees. Once a tree lined neighborhood where people enjoyed walking through, now it has been transformed. There is no shade and the sidewalks are patched with the repair work. I am petitioning the town to replace these trees. I have tried to talk directly with the town supervisor and highway superintendent and keep getting their staff telling me how there is nothing that can be done. Every time I go to the Rite Aid in my neighborhood, I see a person ahead of me in line handed a plastic bag carrying one item: sometimes a toothbrush or a greeting card that would fit easily into their purse or backpack is even double-bagged. When it's my turn in line, I have to be vigilant to make sure the cashier doesn't give me a bag for one item, or that they let me place multiple items in the bag I carry with me before they automatically bag my purchases. Unneeded plastic bags waste valuable resources: for one thing, 12 million barrels of oil are used in their production each year, according to the Wall Street Journal. And they contribute to the vast amount of trash removed from the places we live every day, which require fossil fuels to transport. Plastic bag litter harms numerous species in our environment. Plastic bags are not free because they cost taxpayers millions of dollars in litter cleanup and trash removal. This is something we can change with a simple shift in the policy and training of employees so that they can ask customers, "Would you like a bag?" Some might say they re-use the bags. I re-use them myself, but even with trying to reduce the number I use all the time, I have never once run out or needed to purchase trash bags. According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, the average American family takes home 1,500 plastic shopping bags a year. In addition, a tiny portion of these plastic bags are recycled-- less than 5%, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. This is a place where drugstores across the country can take leadership very easily and make an impact.

Conflict Kitchen (http://conflictkitchen.org) is a restaurant in Pittsburgh, designed and run by artists hoping to start conversations with customers about countries in conflict with the United States. Conflict Kitchen has served food from Afghanistan, North Korea, Iran, Cuba and Venezuela. When Conflict Kitchen started serving Palestinian food, the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh, and B'nai Brit engaged in a campaign aimed to delegitimize Conflict Kitchen and silence expression of Palestinian perspectives. Surprisingly, media in Pittsburgh misrepresented Conflict Kitchen’s aims and activities, but the people have demonstrated strong public support — the restaurant had more than 400 patrons per day since launching its Palestinian menu earlier this fall. Probably as a result of the misleading campaign, operators of the restaurant received a death threat and decided to close temporarily (http://www.wtae.com/news/conflict-kitchen-restaurant-closes-after-threatening-letter/29621868). The Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh, and B'nai Brit should not dictate to the people of Pittsburgh what they hear from Palestinians or where they eat. The City should make sure that all communities in Pittsburgh can express their culture and share their experiences and food with no threat of harm. United States Attorney Loretta Lynch has a powerful record as a proven leader within the Department of Justice. Throughout her 30-year career, she has distinguished herself as a tough, fair, and independent lawyer who has twice headed one of the most active and effective U.S. Attorney’s offices in the country. Here's what the New York Times says about Lynch: WASHINGTON — President Obama announced on Saturday that he would nominate Loretta E. Lynch, the top federal prosecutor in Brooklyn, to be the next attorney general, paving the way for the first African-American woman to hold the job. At a ceremony at the White House, Mr. Obama called Ms. Lynch a highly qualified, tough, fair and independent lawyer who deserved confirmation “without delay.” “She has spent years in the trenches as a prosecutor, aggressively fighting terrorism, financial fraud, cybercrime — all while vigorously defending civil rights,” the president said in the Roosevelt Room, where he appeared with Ms. Lynch and Eric H. Holder Jr., the current attorney general who has announced his intention to step down. “Loretta might be the only lawyer in America who battles mobsters and drug lords and terrorists, and still has a reputation for being a charming people person,” Mr. Obama said. Ms. Lynch, 55, a low-profile prosecutor, said that if confirmed she would “wake up every morning with the protection of the American people my first thought, and I will work every day to safeguard our citizens, our liberties, our rights, and this great nation.”

The social and economic impact of Daylight Savings Time affects everyone. Billions of dollars in economic loss gets paid by taxpayers and consumers. Additionally, people suffer because they have sleep issues or memory issues. Business and government have to pay to change the clocks manually and even on certain computers and pay for any confusion. Daylight savings was instituted for farmers about 100 years ago, but we are now living in the information age. Sign this petition to end daylight savings and share the petition with your companions.

I hate being a human being.

My sister in law Helene Torres was denied entry to the United States because she attempted to fly on a one way ticket. She was only attempting to return to her husband (who she married on June 27) where she had every intention to file the necessary papers to become a US citizen. She was not aware she was breaking any laws, and should be allowed to reunite with her husband here in the U.S.

Appointing Rep. Clift Tsuji to Chair the Hawaii House Agriculture committee is a clear conflict of interest and breach of ethics. Rep. Clift Tsuji is a known chemical and GE industry proponent and has even been awarded Biotech Legislator of the Year as House Agriculture Chairman! He has taken over $15,000 from the chemical GE industry while Hawaii is being used as an open air genetic and chemical laboratory, and unless our legislators listen to us, he will be Agriculture Chair again. This is a clear conflict of interest and highly inappropriate to appoint Rep. Tsuji to the House Agriculture Committee Chairmanship.

I am concerned that the data being currently gathered will be misused by future administrations as our government becomes more and more secretive and abusive against our civil rights. The current seed of data gathering is similar to the census in Germany before WWII. This data created with the new IBM technology could subsequently be abused to identify all Jews and other enemies of the state and bring about the Final Solution.

My brother-in-law was 14 years old when me made the mistake of robbery. He will be turning 32 this month. He was the first 14 year old in Ohio tried as an adult. He is not even eligible for patrol. His only option is judicial release. We are at the mercy of the courts and our judicial system!!! Please offer your support.
