• Thank NBC weatherman Al Roker for telling Rush Limbaugh to “STUFF IT”
As record cold temperatures swept the country last week, right-wingers seized upon their own ignorance to push their anti-science agenda. On his radio show, Rush Limbaugh claimed that liberals had just invented the term “polar vortex”—as a ploy to “help the global warming agenda.” But NBC weatherman Al Roker refused to let that stand. On the Today Show, he definitively proved “polar vortex” has been a well understood term among meteorologists for 50 years. then he added: Then he added: “So for all the doubters out there, STUFF IT.” Roker’s bravery is exceptional. The Koch-funded right-wing echo chamber bullies weather reporters on a regular basis, as they attack the scientific consensus that climate change is a real problem. It’s about time that more weather reporters stand up to this demagoguery. Join us in thanking Al Roker for telling Rush Limbaugh to take his right-wing, anti-science conspiracy theories and "STUFF IT."

  • Harry Reid: Thanks for repressing GOP warmongers
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has called Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid a "dictator" for not allowing a vote on an Iran sanctions bill that President Obama, Senate Democratic leaders and the U.S. intelligence community say would blow up U.S. diplomacy with Iran and put the U.S. on a path towards war. By helping President Obama prevent war with Iran, Majority Leader Reid is expressing the will of the majority of Democrats, which is whom he was elected to represent—not Republicans. Republicans attacking Majority Leader Reid for not calling a vote on Iran sanctions are hypocrites. Republican House Speaker John Boehner won't allow a vote on the Senate's immigration reform bill. Will Mitch McConnell say that Boehner is a "dictator"? Show your appreciation to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid for helping prevent war with Iran by signing our petition.

  • Protect Japan Dolphins from Slaughter
After researching the tragedy of hunting cetacean creatures, it came to my attention that over 20,000 dolphins and porpoises are killed off the coast of Japan every year. Dolphins are a crucial part of the marine ecosystem and deserve the right to life without human cruelty. By contacting the Japanese government and influencing them to stop their slaughter of dolphins, we can save thousands of dolphins' lives while simultaneously preserving the marine ecosystem that provides sustenance for millions of people.

  • Mandatory Sexual Education is Vital For Teens in Our World of 7 Billion
Did you know that the United States has one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in the developed world with 52.1 births per 1000 women ages 15-19 according to the report sent out by UNICEF, “A League Table of Teenage Births in Rich Nations.”. This is a staggering rate compared with the rate in Canada, 20.2 births per 1000, and in France, 9.3 births per 1000. The inevitable truth is that teenagers are going to have sex, so why not do everything we can to ensure they are having safe sex? The report by UNICEF in 2001 demonstrates how the relationship between teenage birth rates and overall birth rates varies considerably from country to country, suggesting that national differences in teenage birth rates are in large part caused by factors that affect teenagers on an individual level. Many factors affect teen pregnancy rates. Some examples include the geographic location of teens and their financial background, but the factor most predictive of teen pregnancy is the level of received sexual education. Despite this known fact, only 22 states in the US mandate that secondary schools must offer sexual education, and only 19 of these states require that this education be medically factual and technically accurate according to Steve Siebold of the Huffington Post. The states with the highest teen pregnancy rates lack robust sexual education in secondary schools according to a study conducted by the Guttmacher Institute. New Mexico, which does not require medically accurate sexual education in their schools, has the highest teen pregnancy rate in the US at 93 births per 1,000 women ages 15-19. Arizona, Texas, and Arkansas also do not require sexual education to be taught and have some of the highest teenage pregnancy rates in the country other than New Mexico. In comparison, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Minnesota have between 33-42 births per 1,000 women ages 15-19. All three of these states require medically accurate and mandated sexual education to be taught in secondary schools. While the federal government has mandated “abstinence-only-until-marriage education,” under Section 510(b), individual states have varying policies that dictate whether or not sexual education is taught in schools. As teenagers living in a modern world, we want to encourage the states that do not require any form of sexual education in their schools to consider changing their laws. The world’s future population will be substantially larger if this problem is not addressed. Please join us in asking these state legislatures to mandate comprehensive and medically accurate sexual education classes as a required component of secondary school curriculum.

  • Money Isn't Speech; Corporations Aren't People!
As a nation, we have lot's of problems, and all of them can, at least in theory, be solved. But as long as expended money is treated as protected speech, and corporations are treated as people with constitutional rights, very few of our problems can be solved. The power of big corporations will trump everything else as long as they can spend vast amounts of money campaigns and on (often false) message ads and commercials aimed at influencing legislation and elections.

  • Sen. Schneider: Don't "Pause" Educational Progress.
Indiana children deserve the best in education. We believe Indiana State Senator, Scott Schneider is endangering the success of our children by not preparing them for college and career. "Pausing" the progress of the past three years is a critical mistake when instead our children need for him to continue supporting the existing Indiana Common Core State Standards.

  • Ban Fracking in Illinois
Governor Pat Quinn claimed the law he supported to regulate fracking would protect Illinois' environment. That was a lie. The inadequate law cannot make fracking safe for people and our environment. After being negotiated with industry lobbyists behind closed doors, the fracking bill was rushed through the legislature with only a few hours of public debate. Now that the public has had time to review the regulation, it's clear the weak law won't protect us. The fracking law will not prevent: earthquakes after fracking in two Illinois seismic zones, water contamination, the results of flooding and tornado disasters that hit fracking sites, radioactivity of fracking waste water, the negative health impact of air emissions on people who live nearby, destruction in the Shawnee National Forest, or many other community and public health impacts of a fracking boom. It even allows an office of Mines and Minerals that's notoriously cozy with industry to waive fines and grant new permits to repeat offenders who have a history of violating the law. Key legislators who led the way in negotiating the law include Representatives John Bradley, Mike Bost, David Reis and Barbara Flynn Currie, plus Senate sponsor Mike Frerichs, and Green Caucus chair Ann Williams. They claim to care about protecting your environment. Tell these fracking hypocrites we don't believe their empty promises! The only reliable way to protect people and our environment is to ban fracking.

  • Judge places Mother in jail for following out of state legal advisement to protect her children...
A mother of 2 small children was placed in jail for following the advisement of a Social Worker and 2 judges in WI to not bring her children for visitation with their father who resides in TN. The advisement given to her to not bring her kids to TN is because a third party reported to Children Protective Services in WI concerns that the children might have been abused by their father. After a forensic investigation where it was decided that the fathers visitation rights be suspended by the Social Worker in WI so the mom did not bring her children to TN (as any concerned mother would do). During the forensic investigation one of the boys stated that his father had touched him inappropriately and left him unattended on multiple occasions. Additionally there was a temporary restraining order placed against the father by 2 judges in WI thereby legally preventing the mother from bringing the children to the father in TN. If this mother had disregarded the legal advisement from WI she would have been held accountable by the WI Courts. This mother is still facing additional jail time and could potentially lose custody of her children. Because this mother followed the legal advisement in WI- the TN judge Phillip Robinson has placed this mother in jail to “make a point” that she should not have disobeyed his order… But what kind of a mother would drop her children off with someone she was just advised not to leave her children with? The community needs to know what type of “points” this judge is trying to make to mothers trying to follow the law and protect their children. This is public record. Please see more on the story here at this blog: http://onemomsbattle.com/2014/01/13/a-tragedy-in-the-family-court-system-judge-phillip-robinson-tennessee/

  • Sen. Richard Burr, Sen. Kay Hagan, and Rep. David Price: Please repeal Citizens United through a ...
I'm passionate about political representation and constantly seeking simple ideas that would improve democracy and people's lives. Citizens United is a travesty and corporate influence runs our legislative bodies through organizations such as ALEC. I think that overturning Citizens United and reforming campaign finance laws would improve political responsiveness to the people's needs. The recommended amendment would declare that (1) artificial entities such as corporations do not have constitutional rights, and (2) money is not free speech. Thanks for reading, please sign and share this petition. Also, consider writing your own message for your elected officials. Please visit my blog at www.chapelboro411.weebly.com
