• Wildland Firefighter Protection Act (H.R. 2858)
I have been a federal seasonal wildland firefighter since 2007. I have fought fires in 8 states and worked on hand crews, engine crews and helicopter crews. For decades wildland firefighters have quietly endured some of the most adversely dangerous and difficult working conditions. We love our jobs, but all we ask is to be properly recognized, to be treated fairly, and to be compensated and looked after in a manner that is consistent with other firefighters around the nation. It doesn't seem right to me that people that prepare espresso have comparable wages and better benefits than those who regularly risk their lives for life and property.

  • Companies Cannot Be Held Liable for Giving Away Excess Food
Companies throughout the U.S.A throw away 40% of the nation's food each day-- hotels, grocery stores, restaurants, etc. pile food into the garbage. Meanwhile, U.S. federal tax dollars in the 2012 fiscal year added up to $74.6 billion in food assistance (aka "food stamps" or "EBT"), while California state taxes paid $6.8 million-- this does not include county provisions-- which vary. The reason businesses aren't legally able to give away excess food (if a restaurant meses up an order or a package gets damaged at a food store) to hungry individuals in need, & that furthermore they lock their dumpsters to prevent "theft", is that they can be held legally accountable if that person gets sick. For this reason, food industry workers (at restaurants, hotels, grocery stores) often reluctantly throw away food (sometimes large amounts) while looking out their business windows only to watch others begging for spare change to eat. Removing this liability from companies his will help take the strain off of churches & charities who give everything they have & still fail to provide nutritious foods, & are often now suffering from "Donor fatigue" themselves. This petition seeks to alleviate & end a blatant injustice.

  • No military action in Syria without UN or NATO approval.
We are not a rogue nation. We should not take military action against another country without the support of either the U.N. or N.A.T.O. This type of action did not work in Iraq or Afganistan (or Viet Nam). We need to find other solutions: i.e., stop the flow of $ to both sides; give humanitarian aid only; increase and maintain diplomatic pressure; use technology to educate. War is not the answer.

  • Investigate Goldman Sachs
SEC is the most corrupt organization Big financial institutions like J.P.Morgan and Goldman Sachs still continue to involve in naked Shorting and Criminal shorting procedures. For example: Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) a leading chip maker recently posted very good Q2 and also forward looking statements for the Q3 Goldman Sachs have a very large short position. We really don't know when they will cover. We have written to the SEC, FINRA about the illegal shorting of shares by Goldman Sachs. Since Goldman Sachs has influence with Democrats and Republicans, no action had been taken by SEC. We suspect SEC and senate members are involved in this illegal shorting of shares through Hedgefunds and financial institutions. A number of leading analysts have posted positive reviews on AMD and have raised projection targets, but the shares have not moved at all. THe criminal shorting continues with no cover date posted anywhere. The company had been posting all great products, but the financial institutions are spreading false rumor through many different sites and keeping the share prices down. Goldman Sachs downgraded and had short positions with AMD Then, there were articles everywhere that AMD's chip Kaveri will be delayed. That caused the companies share prices to lose 5% in one day. AMD clearly called those rumors as not true, and Goldman Sachs and the hedgefunds that had short positions continued to manipulate through different source: Digitimes Again AMD shares dropped another 3% http://seekingalpha.com/article/1661062-amd-digitimes-rumor-not-relevant-to-investors?source=yahoo Again, AMD clearly told investors that the rumors are false. Now, IDC research data published an article on slowing PC sales and the timing of the article clearly suggest that the Market Makers and hedge funds including Goldman Sachs are continuing to short and degrade the value of AMD. http://www.marketwatch.com/story/pc-growth-also-slowing-in-emerging-markets-idc-2013-08-29?siteid=yhoof2 How long will this nonsense continue? We want SEC to investigate Digitimes, IDC, and Motley fool. Individual investors are creamed every single time and no one is there is to take any action. We have written to the White house and even the president is silent about it. Goldman Sachs has been involved in this criminal practice for a very long time. Naked Shorting is still there. SEC have done nothing. We demand action for 1. Who is involved in this criminal shorting other than Goldman Sachs 2. The company has posted improved projection sales and revenue, and an average of 20 million shares are traded every day and the stock price has not moved an inch. Who is behind this criminal manipulation Why is the White house silent on Goldman Sachs? When will they take action? WE DEMAND ACTION IMMEDIATELY - not after 5 or 6 weeks or after 6 months. We need SEC to investigate TRADES IMMEDIATELY and all connections to Goldman must be investigated. SEC complaint:Reference Number: TCR1377896536827

  • Reform the Criminal Justice System
My petition demands that Congress put justice back in our criminal justice system by fundamentally reevaluating why and how we convict and incarcerate -- and the best ways we can empower people who have been incarcerated to succeed once they rejoin society. But criminal justice goes beyond just prisons. Since 1980, the number of people under community supervision -- either probation or parole -- has risen by more than 250%. More than 7 million people live under supervision of the criminal justice system. Without programs to help offenders rehabilitate, reintegrate, and stay in touch with their families, offenders are more likely to reoffend and take another trip through this ineffective, revolving-door system that costs us $74 billion per year. But more devastating are the impacts on the inmates' children and families. Not only do they lose the income and direct support from their incarcerated parents, but innocent children who have a parent in prison also suffer emotional trauma, social stigma, and destruction of their familial relationships. We can do better, and we've started to in Newark with smarter reentry programs. But our cities and towns can't do this alone. The federal government must reform the system where it controls it, and support innovation at the local level.

  • Stay out of Syria
We the undersigned here by agree that Syria is a sovereign nation, it's internal affairs it's own. While We completely agree that the use of chemical Weapons is heinous and disgusting, the use of surgical military strikes or any other kind of military intervention in Syria would have far more widespread consequences in the short and long term and while it does not directly affect us at this time, it will in the near future. Possibly resulting in a larger regional conflict or worse. A conflict which could make the use of chemical weapons seem trivial in comparison. We cannot afford another war with the current economic climate when The United States of America and The United Kingdom are facing hard enough times now.

  • No Strike on Syria
I believe we have no national interest in toppling the Assad regime. We do not need another attack on an Arab/Muslim country. Our moral revulsion should be expressed by moral means.

  • Stand with the sisters against this Kentucky fracking pipeline
After poisoning drinking water and increasing earthquake risk throughout Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia, now the fracking industry wants to build a dangerous pipeline through the heart of Kentucky, including hundreds of acres of historic farmland that an order of nuns have lived on for nearly 200 years. The proposed pipeline would be operated by a chemical company with a record of fatal accidents. A spill or accident along this route could blow up homes or poison drinking water in over 18 counties. The pipeline company is surveying routes right now and threatening to use eminent domain to take private land. The Sisters of Loretto are bravely standing up to the fracking industry and have refused to let surveyors on their land. They've also taken the fight to Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear--but so far, he's declined to take action. Now it's time to get his attention by showing that thousands of people across the country are standing with these courageous nuns.

  • Inhumane Treatment in Georgia Prison's
My son is incarcerated in a Georgia Prison which their has been a recent implementation of controlled flushing the tiolets by guards from outside the cells, ventilation inadequacies and controlled electricity. With the many horrific stories of inmates being beaten and even killed in some cases by guards retaliating against them for one reason or another, it would only be of great concern that one would allow the release of an inmate to remain in the tiolet for an unreasonable amount of time. Thus, exposing inmates to an unhealthy enviroment with poor ventilation increasing health risk. Ninety per cent of Georgia Prison's are without air condition on cell blocks. Also on their lock-down units inmates are only allowed out of the cells one hr and a half a day in hot and cold temperatures. Not all guards however some have withheld basic rights from inmates. These are true reflections of inmates within our prison system.

  • Judge Baugh should be removed from the Bench..
Judge Baugh has re-victimized the victim and blamed her for being raped. The teacher who raped her was 53 and given a 30 day sentence and the 14 year old girl was blamed as participatory. She eventually killed herself. Shameful behavior! A man with this attitude and belief system should not be allowed on the bench. I wonder how many other cases involving sexual assault he has used this outdated and disgusting point of view in sentencing.
