Halloween is not only an incredibly fun and candy-filled day for the majority of children (and adults) in our country, but it is an important tradition with a history that shouldn't be forgotten. An entire season revolves around Halloween with jack-o-lanterns, ghosts, and goblins filling our neighborhoods and stores with spooky delight. Not recognizing this day as a holiday (and giving the people the time to stop and celebrate accordingly) is a travesty-causing it to become a lost tradition. Let's not let Halloween be forgotten-rather, let's give it the attention and significance it deserves!

There is a real possibility that the United States will soon engage in military action that will result in the deaths of innocent Syrian civilians, on the pretext that Syrians are killing innocent Syrian civilians. There should be an adjudication of complicity by an international tribunal before one nation sanctions another through the use of deadly military action.

My daughter is an incoming freshman to UCSB and has been recruited by Cathy Neushul and Connor Levoff to play women's water polo. These are well-established and well-respected coaches from the Santa Barbara area. They have been coaching high school and younger for years and hold many national girls' water polo titles. They were abruptly, and I believe unfairly, kicked out of their coaching positions with only two weeks before the start of the school year. Please support them in signing this petition to get them reinstated as head coaches for UCSB Women's Water Polo. BPA is in our plastic bottles and the lining of most canned foods and drinks. Years of research prove BPA to be a major carcinogen causing brain and other tumors, premature cell death, and it mimics various hormones in dangerous ways. CANCER IS AN EPIDEMIC IN THIS COUNTRY AND ITS CAUSES MUST BE STOPPED. The EPA today took BPA off its list of "chemicals of concern," along with several others including PDBE's. We want STUDY OF THESE CHEMICALS CONTINUED AND THEIR USES IN OUR FOOD CHAIN BANNED!

The City College of San Francisco Music and Theater Departments have launched this petition to protect $88 million currently dedicated to complete construction of City College's Performing Arts Education Center (PAEC). The petition asks the California State Legislature for a one-year extension on $38 million in state bond funding and calls on the CCSF special trustee and interim chancellor to respect the will of the voters of San Francisco, who approved two bonds for CCSF totaling $50 million. Almost $20 million has been spent on the Performing Arts Center (PAC) to date, The project, which has won both state and national awards for design and sustainability, is now shovel-ready. The petition to support completion of the PAC has already been signed by writers, actors and musicians including Laurie Anderson, Danny Glover, Lawrence Ferlinghetti and many others. The Black Youth Project 100 (BYP100) demand that leaders of the U.S. House of Representatives, Speaker John Boehner and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi NOT call the vote to authorize the use of military force in Syria. We demand this for several reasons: 1. US Military Intervention will not bring justice, self determination, safety, security or freedom to the people of Syria. We believe that military attack being proposed to the crisis in Syria will only make the suffering of the Syrian people worse. The best most humane way forward is a peaceful, political settlement with all sides of the conflict at the table and expanding humanitarian aid for Syrian Refugees. 2. BYP100 has no confidence in this Congress’s ability to make sound decisions about foreign policy when it has consistently failed to make sound domestic policy. It is our belief that such an intervention would perpetuate the injustice black people in the United States are facing today. Congress committing Americans to pay for a unnecessary military intervention while refusing to pay for vital social and community Services within the United States as a whole and the Black community in particular due to sequestration budget cuts to vital programs, including SNAP and Head Start, is wrong, unjust and immoral. 3. BYP100 rejects this ‘Stand Your Ground’ approach to foreign policy because one government that is empowered to police the world is no different than Florida gun owners who are empowered by unjust laws to shoot first and ask questions later. Will you help to encourage President Obama to support the National Cesar E. Chavez Blood Drive Challenge? Only 3% of the U.S. Latino/Hispanic population donate blood, yet it is the fastest growing segment of our population. We can turn this situation around into a solution for our entire nation. Let's increase Latino/Hispanic participation in blood donation and bone marrow registry by inviting more Latino/Hispanic student leaders on more college campuses to take on this challenge. It's working! Over 70,000+ college students have participated already. We would like President Obama to support the campaign by possibly inviting some of the student leaders to the White House. What do you think?

Stop-and-frisk won’t likely be used on the young professionals downtown or the hipsters that are moving into the city. And does anyone honestly think that the DPD will be stop-and-frisking Lions, Tigers or Red Wings fans on game day? No - it will be the working class black and latino communities that will be the target of these types of unconstitutional discrimination and searches. The Manhattan Institute helped develop New York City’s controversial stop-and-frisk program. That program has only yielded three results: it’s ineffective, it leads to racial profiling of blacks and latinos and it was recently ruled unconstitutional by a federal judge. The worst part? While retirees worry Kevyn Orr is on his way to gutting their pensions, the Detroit Police Department is paying consultants more than $600,000 to advise them on implementing stop-and-frisk. Seriously? If anyone needs to be subject to random stop-and-frisks, it’s the Koch Brothers.

I can not rationalize bombing Syria. No good will come of it. If we really care about helping the "Good People of Syria" then we should devote our attention to those poor people who have had to leave their homeland.
