  • New Yorkers say no cuts to Social Security benefits!
President Obama's budget plan is not the kind of change we can believe in. Obama's budget will includes a big cut to Social Security benefits -- making life harder for retirees for years to come. Despite President Obama's campaign promises about protecting Social Security and Medicare benefits, he is pushing hard for this devastating cut. But members of Congress who care about working families can stop this plan. Speaker Boehner needs Democratic votes to pass even the least controversial bills. So if enough Democrats say Chained CPI and other benefit cuts are off the table, then they'll really be off the table.

  • Save Our Neighborhood Libraries
i have learned that there is a move to change the neighborhood landscape as it relates to our libraries. I have attended two meetings concerning the Business Library in downtown Brooklyn. The plan as I understand it is to build a condominum and have the library in the basement on a lease arrangement. I believe if people can't see the library the n less people will not attend the library. right now people who don't live in the Heights appear to be the users of the library and not so much the people who live there,\ Are we trying to restructure the library so that people from other communities can;t use them? Just thinking outside the box. In Clinton Hill, I understand they are thinking of building housing on top of the present library(use of the air rights). In my community. We already have buildings that are empty because people can't get jobs and can't afford the housing that is already here. Who are we building this new housing for ? (Are we getting ready to do another regentrification)? We do have others in my community already, so is this to get rid of those of us who are still able to keep our brownstones and co-ops? Just Thinking, wondering. Someone please speak to us in the 8th Congressional district. Why don't we have enough money to keep our libraries. We need our Libraries for our children and for our Seniors and others too. But we need someone to tell why we can't have Libraries like we have always had. Please sign my petition if you are concerned about the Neighborhood Library. .

  • Support a Moratorium on Shale Gas Drilling in Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania is being wracked by fracking, but together we can stop it. Keystone Progress, along with some great partners, have gathered almost 100,000 signatures for a statewide moratorium on this dangerous and unnatural gas drilling. Help us stun the frackers and meet their goal by the April 30th deadline by signing below As fracking spills across Pennsylvania, things are only getting worse. We need to act now. From poisoned drinking water, to toxic air pollution and dead livestock, the list of people being harmed by fracking continues to grow. Gas drilling companies have committed more than 3,000 violations of environmental law, showing a continual disregard for Pennsylvanians' health and the health of our environment. And yet the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection continues to withhold the results of water tests that would tell us what chemicals the frackers are using and who is at risk. Despite all this damage, and more, last year our legislature went so far as to strip local communities of their right to take legal action to protect themselves from fracking. We can't wait for the politicians to act. We need a people-powered movement that's big enough to fight back and win. With your help, we can build that movement in Pennsylvania. Join 100,000 other Keystone state residents and call for a timeout on fracking right now.

  • Senator Reid: Please Protect Social Security
Social Security is not driving the deficit, therefore it should not be part of reforms aimed at cutting the deficit. U.S. debt comes from a decade of tax cuts for the wealthy, unlimited spending on foreign wars and a recession caused by unregulated Wall Street speculation. It is wrong to ask our seniors, veterans, and the disabled to pay for the greed of the top 1%. President Obama's proposed "Chained CPI," deceptively portrayed as a reasonable cost of living adjustment, is a cut to Social Security benefits that would hurt seniors. Social Security is too important for Americans to be used as a bargaining chip in debt negotiations. Today, most seniors rely on Social Security for 2/3rds of their income or more. Cutting Social Security will keep many of us from paying for necessities as we age. These cuts are an even bigger threat to the disabled and veterans, who would face the COLA cut for 30, 40 years or more. Gutting Social Security is going in the wrong direction. A better Social Security reform would insure the wealthy pay their fair share by lifting the cap on income subject to Social Security taxes. We need retirement security, not less. Let us stand together and speak out against corporate greed performed at the expense of the public.

  • Jobs for Youth and Jobs for All, NOW!
The youth of our nation need economic stability. They are the future leaders, parents, workers, and thinkers of our country. They need good jobs to be able to contribute to society. Skyrocketing student debt, restrictive immigration policy, and the rising attacks on the labor movement have all limited young peoples' ability to find employment that will allow them to live in dignity. Latino and African American youth still face employment discrimination, causing genocidal levels of poverty in these communities that fuel the vicious cycles of gun violence and incarceration. Instead, youth could be part of rebuilding our nation's infrastructure, training to teach in our public schools, building community centers , and so much more. We say NO to the Sequester and endless other cutbacks that are being proposed under pressure from the 1%. We say YES to jobs legislation. We say YES to investment in our infrastructure, student support system, and immigration reform. Sign the petition to tell Congress and President Barack Obama we support jobs for youth and jobs for all, NOW!
