• Legal Immigration Should Not Be A Waiting Game!
In the debate over immigration, something that confuses a lot of folks is the question of why so many people immigrate illegally in the first place. While it might sound reasonable to ask that immigrants "just do it the legal way" the truth is that our legal immgration process in this country is long, costly, confusing and frustrating. It often takes an average of 10 years or more, thousands of dollars and endless hearings and paperwork for the average Mexican or South/Central American worker to immigrate legally and "do things the right way." In the mean time, lack of opportunity and extreme poverty drives many to be willing to risk life and limb to have a chance to work hard and take care of their families by crossing the border, so that the choice may very well be "break the law or let my family starve." So many otherwise level headed progressive minded people just don't get why aspiring Americans don't "just do things by the book." As the White House prepares to offer its groundbreaking immigration reform bill, please join me in telling Congress and the President to commit streamline the path to becoming an American and commit to a path to citizenship in less than 7 years!

  • UCLA, stop robbing your patients
UCLA Medical Center is charging patients a $150 "hospital facility fee" for every regular visit to their doctor's office. I have several health issues and see 3 specialists on a regular basis at UCLA and have thousands of dollars in fees I cannot afford to pay. With more than 200 doctors only seeing a mere 10 patients a week, UCLA is making $300,000 per week at a bare minimum from this fee alone.

With the pending cuts to discretionary funding, the federal TRiO Programs (born out of the civil rights movement of the 1960s) is extremely vulnerable. Please sign to protect the TRIO programs from further cuts and possible elimination.

  • Put Sister Rosetta Tharpe in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
A major influence on a variety of rock and roll performers who have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Sister Rosetta Tharpe was a pioneer in developing the music and style that became rock and roll. A Rock and Roll Hall of Fame without her is not a true Hall of Fame.

  • High Copays
The New York Physical Therapy Association (NYPTA) is calling on the state legislature to stop insurance companies from requiring patients to pay the higher “specialist" copay for physical therapy services. Some patients are paying as much as $50 per visit while their insurance may only pay $10, or even nothing at all. High “specialist” copays put physical therapy out of the financial reach of many patients, forcing them to forgo needed care or choose alternative options that drive up the cost of health care for everyone.

  • Stop Cluster Housing in Bethany
This zoning change, if enacted, will raise taxes, spoil the education system and turn Bethany into a city. In Bethany we enjoy the rural character, the peace, the dark nights and the quiet almost entirely because of Bethany’s strict zoning regulations. If this development is allowed to proceed, subsequent proposals, as large or larger, would be right behind. Dense development will tax the water supply and likely pollute it. NO CLUSTER HOUSING IN BETHANY!!

  • NC DOT Secretary Anthony Tata: Don't discriminate against non-citizens in North Carolina with pin...
Beginning on March 25, the North Carolina DMV will begin issuing pink drivers licenses to non-citizens. Who gets them? Deferred action recipients, those under temporary protected status, legal permanent residents, and anyone else in North Carolina, according to the state's Department of Transportation spokesperson, that doesn't have the right to vote. This is discrimination and we're fighting against it.

  • Cancel the Sequester! Protect Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid
On March 1, a series of self-imposed, unfocused cuts will impact a wide array of government agencies and services, from the Social Security Administration to national security to education. This wrongheaded and indiscriminate use of the austerity ax will harm the economy, the public, and the future capacity of the government. It will undermine the growth of the economy.
