  • Appoint Eduardo Martinez to the Richmond City Council
Monday February 4, 2013, the city council will decide whether or not our city will spend over $200,000 on a special election, an election that special interests have already begun spending toward having. They are doing a petition drive for a special election and a phone survey to find out who the best candidate to challenge me would be. Richmond needs this money in their general funds for city services.

  • Congress: Stop Criminalizing the Internet
On January 11, 2013, facing decades in prison on trumped up charges, my partner, Aaron Swartz, made the tragic choice to take his own life. He was only 26. Aaron's supposed crime? He was accused of checking out too many articles (4.8 million), too fast, from an online academic library called JTSOR, to which he had authorized access. He never used or distributed the articles and later returned them. For that, he faced 35 years behind bars and endured two years of relentless persecution. The outdated Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA) made this tragedy possible by giving absurdly broad powers to corporations and prosecutors to criminalize an array of online activity. That includes breaching a website's terms of service--that long fine print you "agree to" but never read. All of us who knew and loved Aaron never want to see anyone suffer this kind of abuse of power again. So, we're urgently calling on Congress to reform the CFAA. Aaron was an innovator, entrepreneur, and social justice advocate who co-authored RSS 1.0 (the web's format for sharing and distributing content) at the age of 14, co-founded the social news website Reddit, and led the fight to stop SOPA and PIPA--the internet censorship bills. His fight to stop SOPA and PIPA started with a petition just like this one, so we know this can work. In fact, there's already been a strong, bipartisan reaction to Aaron's death and legislation is in the works to reform the CFAA right now. But it won't happen without a big public push. We can't get Aaron back, but can you help us honor his memory by signing this petition and sharing it with everyone you know? Thank you for listening. --Taren Stinebrickner-Kauffman

Living in the city I rely on law enforcement to keep me safe from gun violence and anyone putting a new gun in society should at least offset some of the expense.

  • Public Funded Election
Far to long good people could not run for office without giving special privilege to special interest groups. This has been a detriment to society. Its time that an level playing field be established. We need people to be given a budget and use that budget to get the most votes. This would stop all contributions to individual parties. No free or special interest groups buying advertisement time. Individual or special interest groups can go door to door to advertise their candidate, but no group will hire people to do this.

  • Support for Massachusetts GMO Labeling Bills
Several states have tried to pass laws requiring GMO (genetically altered food and seeds) to be labeled for consumers purchasing food or seed for gardens. ALL of the state legislation has been defeated at the state levels by corporate food growers! WE Know this there will be a corporate backlash to these bills again, however, Massachusetts citizens will not be deterred this time. WE HAVE A CONSUMER RIGHT TO LABELING OF GMO PRODUCTS! The increase in learning disabilities, children on the Autusim Spectrum, depression in children over the past 15 years correlates with food changes made in the American food supply of GMO products, as as a variety of health problems in adults. Massachusetts Representative Ellen Story from Amherst has re-introduced 2 GMO Labeling bills. Massachusetts has 2 newly introduced bills: HD 133, An Act relative to the labeling of food. This bill would require that any food product exposed for sale in the Commonwealth that is genetically engineered, or derived from genetically engineered, be labeled as such. HD 134, An Act relative to the labeling of seed. This bill would require that any seed or agricultural products exposed for sale in the Commonwealth which have been genetically engineered, or derived from genetically engineered material, be labeled in a manner conforming with other existing labeling laws for wholesale and agricultural products.
