Our childrens education should be top priority

The issues surrounding the use of armed drones are many and complicated and the consequences of using them tragic and far-reaching. Do we as a nation really condone the loss of innocent life in the taking of terrorists by drone attack? What are we doing in Afghanistan? Are we at war? Are we an occupying force? The war on terrorism has become a morass into which we are dumping our humanity. We must re-think who we are as a nation and fellow human beings.

The NRA has spent the past six weeks holding bizarre press events and taking public actions that show how out of touch they are with the rest of the country. Rep. Murphy is representing the interests of gun manufacturers instead of representing the wishes of his constituents. Citizens want common sense gun legislation.

I have been told by a local Catholic Priest that it would take more than a petition to change this. I DISAGREE. The churches that do not allow women to hold the Priesthood should not be allowed to have tax deductions in the USA.

Remove Bob Lonesberry from WHAM 1180.. His sanctimonious vitriol commentary is hurtful to our community. He had been fired by WHAM 1180 before because of racist comments he made, only to be rehired. Still, this man spews racism and bigotry towards women, all behind a very thin veil.

With community encouragement, our county recently turned down an offer to use fracking waste (undisclosed toxic chemical waste from hydrofracking) as de-icing 'brine' on our roads. Our water source, a well, is about 6 feet from the road. Chemicals used on our roads can stick to our shoes and run-off into our water sources. Legislation and oversight of this practice needs to be immediate and strong, yet doesn't yet exist. Let's get it started.

Dramatically increased life spans require that we make common sense adjustments to Social Security and Medicare. Proposed solutions that "grandfather" everyone over 55 show political cowardice, are divisive, and assume those of us closer to retirement aren't willing to share in the sacrifice. I believe all age groups love this country and are willing to pitch in as long as they feel the sacrifice is equally shared. Since raising the retirement age disproportionately affects the poor, equal sacrifice would call for eliminating the Social Security and Medicare payroll caps. This would ensure all Americans contribute the same percentage of their income (whether from work or investments) to these programs. Finally common sense dictates that these programs should be means-tested so that benefits are not automatically paid to those fortunate enough to not need them.

Return to a more efficient and effective form of city government. As a long-term city employee and union president for over nine years I have seen the problems, poor stewardship, and lack of professional training and behavior of city management. It's time to return to a more beneficial leadership process.
