• Medicaid and our responsibility to the poor.
Just go away and die! That’s the Real message the “Conservatives” are giving the less fortunate in our society when they demand that the state turn down Medicaid funds for the poor. Never mind that Washington is paying nearly all the expanded costs for the next ten years. No, anything proposed to help the poor, disabled, or those suffering from catastrophic health problems is taboo in their eyes. Been through it personally...

  • Elderly rip-off
To abolish "observation" status for Medicare patients at hospitals. It pays Part 2 instead of Part 1, which is more costly for the patient and makes him/her ineligible for rehabilitation at most rehab centers. There is no notice given to a patient of this status and what it means to him/her financially.

  • The Marital Support Act For The Disabled
My husband, Joe, is totally disabled by Multiple Sclerosis, but would lose his SSI if I went to work. Though I would like to work, without his SSI, at age 59, I could not make enough to support us. The disabled who marry should be entitled to thier SSI checks regardless of whether a spouse works or not.

  • “Don't Fire Our Gay Coach VCU!”
James Finley, VCU women’s volleyball head coach’s contract was not renewed after an astounding season, with 25 wins, 6 losses, and a trip to the A-10 Tournament Semifinals. Mr. Finley believes that his contract was not renewed due to him being openly gay. Unfortunately, this has not be the only incident. Pat Stauffer, who is a lesbian, has worked in VCU athletics for 30 years, was demoted from Senior Women’s Administrator to Senior Associate AD for Sports Administration in October.

  • Increase tax on top 2%; save Social Security, Medicare, & Medicaid
President Obama is proposing to let the Bush Tax cuts expire for top income earners but keep them for the middle class. The growing disparity of income and wealth in our country are endangering our middle class, which is the strength of a democracy. Allowing the Bush Tax cuts to stay in place for the middle class will help keep the economy growing. The top 2% should consider it their patriotic duty to give back to the society that has given them the tools to prosper, and the small increase in their top tax bracket will not endanger their welfare.

  • Right to ride motorized bicycle to school
I'm a student at Southern Reynolds R-2 in Ellington, Missouri. At the beginning of this year I was told by the school administration I could no longer park my motorized bicycle on the school campus due to insurance reasons. I looked into it, and, according to Missouri state law, you don't have to have a license or insurance on one. The rights of Missouri motorized bicyclists should be upheld and students should be able to park at the school.
