  • CONGRESS, PASS EXTENSION OF WIND POWER TAX CREDIT
The tax credit for wind energy is set to expire at the end of this year if Congress doesn't take action. Unlike fossil fuel subsidies, which are long term and have never expired, subsidies for renewable energy have been terminated three times in the last two decades. It is time we become serious about fighting climate change. Supporting renewable energy will not only decrease our CO2 emissions but will also support our economy and help us move toward energy independence.

  • OPT OUT: CREATE DO NOT MAIL OR CALL LISTS FOR POLITICAL ADS
According to the Washington Post, by the end of September more than $200 million had been spent on print ads by the two primary Presidential campaigns alone. Hundreds of millions more have been wasted on Senate and House campaigns. They're junking up our mailboxes, swamping our landfills, and wasting natural resources. Most people pitch them without even looking at them because none of the ads can be trusted to provide unbiased facts. We need a way to OPT OUT.

  • David Koch: Pay To Rebuild New York City
Koch Industries billionaire David H. Koch is the wealthiest man in New York City, with a net worth of $40 billion. His fortune is built on polluting the climate system, from tar sands oil, pipelines, and petrochemicals. The rising seas and superheated oceans made Hurricane Sandy into a monster that has caused about $30 billion of damage to New York. Constructing a sea barrier to defend against future sea level rise will cost another $10 billion. Not only has Koch Industries dumped billions of tons of carbon into the air, David Koch has spent hundreds of millions of dollars promoting climate deniers and Tea Party ideologues who fight regulation of carbon pollution. David Koch should immediately pledge his entire fortune to pay the government of New York City for all necessary repairs and investments to guard against future sea level rise and fossil-fueled storms. If Koch refuses, we will take action to shame him and expose his New York City philanthropy as a sham.

  • Make lies in political ads illegal in all states
When Americans apply for a job, falsifying information on the job application is grounds for firing. Lying on your resume is also grounds for dismissal. Therefore, candidates for political office should not be permitted to campaign based on lies. Individuals wishing to be considered for political office should be required to define their platform, detail their plans and ideas, and defend their position with facts. Political candidates are required to 'approve' political ads, but they are not required to be honest in those ads. The American public has a right to the truth and is entitled to be able to consider the facts presented by all candidates, and to be confident that they are receiving factual information prior to casting their vote. Lying to the American public in order to garner votes for political office is unethical and should be illegal.

  • Save the Historic YMCA: Say NO to Demolition
November 16th St. Petersburg Community Preservation Commission (CPC) will vote whether or not to allow demolition of the Historic YMCA building. The CPC is comprised of nine persons appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the City Council. The Mediterranean Revival building, located at 116 5th Street S St. Petersburg, FL, was constructed in 1926 and in October of 1991 it was listed in the St Petersburg Register of Historic Places. A Certificate of Appropriateness (COA) to demo the building is filed and will be heard by the CPC. If the CPC decision is appealed it then goes before City Council. Historic buildings in St Pete, such as the downtown YMCA, serve as a public and physical reminder of our city's deep and rich culture. These buildings are nostalgic and a point of pride among many city residents, and should be preserved, not torn down in the name of "progress" and "development." Please join Awake Pinellas in telling City Council and the CPC that we do not want this important monument to our city's history torn down.

  • Governor Phil Bryant must immediately retract his statement calling on voters to show ID at the p...
Please FORWARD, EMAIL and post on your SOCIAL MEDIA accounts widely: Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant recently said at a gathering of the Mississippi Economic Council that voter's should show ID at the polls despite the Voter ID law not being enacted for this election on Tues., Nov. 6th. He is purposely misleading voters with these statements in his capacity as the highest elected official in the state of Mississippi. The people of Mississippi look to their Governor for guidance and leadership; purposely misleading voters while they prepare to exercise one of the most sacred rights we hold as Mississippians and Americans is plain wrong and bordering on dereliction of his elected duties to faithfully and fully represent ALL Mississippians. People have been beaten, murdered, and lives ruined to ensure that ALL people can equally vote regardless of status -- equating this right to buying cigarettes or alcohol is not only seriously offensive, it is just plain wrong: voting is a RIGHT, not a privilege. Governor Bryant is encouraging poll workers to violate the voting rights of his state's citizens with such a misleading statement, putting the poll workers in jeopardy for engaging in such illegal acts. We call on Governor Bryant to immediate issue a state retracting these remarks and fully and unequivocally clarify that voters do not have to show photo ID at the polls and the Voter ID law is not in effect for the election on Tues., Nov. 6th. Governor Bryant's statement: "If you have to show a ID to buy a pack of cigarettes or to buy alcohol, which you should, then certainly you ought to have to present an ID to vote, so that we are certain that you're not stealing someone else's liberty and their chance to vote," Bryant said. ALSO: Let the Governor know what you think about his statement: http://www.governorbryant.com/contact/

  • Demand Romney To Make Youngstown, Ohio Soup Kitchen Whole
In Youngstown, Ohio, the St. Vincent DePaul Society runs a soup kitchen that serves hungry children and families in the community. Mitt Romney recently sent his VP nominee, Paul Ryan, to the soup kitchen for a 15-minute “service” photo op of him washing pans without obtaining proper permission. The publicity stunt was designed to send a political message -- and it did. Angered by the soup kitchen’s use in a political campaign, many of its donors have withdrawn their financial support. Moreover, the soup kitchen’s volunteers are now getting harassed by Romney-Ryan supporters. New donors have stepped up to offset some of the losses (info on making a donation is below), but it should be Mitt Romney who takes responsibility. It’s time for him to pay up and show the soup kitchen the money – not his apology. He needs to make the soup kitchen financially whole, so its volunteers can continue to serve the families of Ohio. To make a donation, visit http://mahoningsvdp.org/ or send a check to directly benefit the Mahoning County Society of Saint Vincent De Paul to the following address: St. Vincent de Paul Society Mahoning County P.O. Box 224 Youngstown, Ohio 44501 To send a copy of the petition language directly to the Romney campaign, you can email [email protected] and [email protected].
