Military supply companies in the USA are making a fortune selling heavy weapons to both our allies and to our enemies overseas. Guns and bombs made in America are killing our own soldiers. It should be against the law for the tax-supported American defense industry to sell weapons to a foreign country without federal authorization.

As a career firefighter in the State of Illinois, I have paid into my pension fund without ever missing a payment. State Government Officials have historically allowed State and Municipal employers (my boss) the right to ignore their responsibility to provide adequate funding contributions into State/Municipal pensions, resulting in an 83 BILLION DOLLAR PENSION SHORTFALL. Congressman “Doc” Hastings introduced legislation that would stop river restoration in communities nationwide, hurt local economies, and strip away wildlife protections all to benefit a handful of special interests. This “Dangerous Dams Protection Act” would do sweeping damage to rivers across the country. It would: * Harm rivers and wildlife and threaten public safety by prohibiting federal funds to be used to remove or study the removal of any hydropower dam - even unsafe dams that the dam owner and the local community want to remove. * Slow job growth and hurt businesses by bringing river restoration to a screeching halt and stopping growth in commercial and recreational fishing. * Create an expensive new subsidy that would not only allow private groups to build new dams, whether or not they are in the public interest, but taxpayers would have to reimburse the full cost. This irresponsible bill could be up for debate this month. Will you tell your Representative to oppose this destructive vision for rivers and hydropower – one that is at odds with mainstream thinking about hydropower policy?

my grandsons live appox. 11/2 from school& the have to walk or have someone take them& pick them up. Because the policy here in Altoona,Pa. is If they live 2 miles from the school. The School Provides NO Buses.That is way to far for any child to walk.Because there is to much Crime -Raping,Kidnapping& Child Snatching.going on nowadays. As a member of the Welcome Table, the food I eat is important to me. Part of a safe and sustainable food system is ensuring that the people that grow, harvest, process, transport, and prepare our food are treated fairly and with dignity. Worker rights are as important to me as organics and buying local. According to a recent report released by the Food Labor Research Center at UC Berkeley, raising the minimum wage for the benefit of 29 million low-wage workers - including almost 8 million food workers - would only cost the average household about an additional 10 cents per day for food (see the report at www.rocunited.org/dime-a-day). Almost one-third of food workers suffer food insecurity, meaning they are unable to access enough safe and nutritious food to meet their needs. Food workers rely on food stamps to meet their needs at 1.5 times the rate of the general workforce. This has to change. I have started this petition with the Food Chain Workers Alliance and the Restaurant Opportunities Centers United, calling on Congress to increase the minimum wage (currently $7.25/hour and for workers who receive tips $2.13/hour). If you care about the people behind your food, please stand with me and urge Congress to support the Miller/Harkin Fair Minimum Wage Act. A dime a day is a small price that I am willing to pay so that 29 million workers can make ends meet! P.S. Some of your reading this might recall that last year's proposal was to increase the minimum wage to $9.80. This year's proposal is to increase it to $10.10 per hour over three years and we have changed the petition to reflect that.

Change.org is changing for the worse -- and just fired the one person on their staff who tried to make sure you knew about it. As the Huffington Post reported, "Change.org, the online social movement company founded on progressive values, has decided to change its advertising policy to allow for corporate advertising, Republican Party solicitations, astroturf campaigns, anti-abortion or anti-union ads and other controversial sponsorships, according to internal company documents." Huffpo also reported that Change.org wasn't planning to tell its users about these changes, so they promptly fired the employee who leaked the info. Tell Change.org to reinstate the fired staffer right away.

San Miguel County has less water for survival than nearly any place in the United States. Now Royal Dutch Shell and the gas and oil industry want to drill for natural gas here, involving hydraulic fracturing, aka fracking. Fracking uses millions of gallons of water per well and injects hundreds of toxic chemicals deep into the earth. One hundred percent of these wells eventually leak, polluting the earth forever.

Financial transparency is the life-blood of our democracy. Both Democratic and Republican past presidential candidates have released their tax returns. They have also voluntarily identified "bundlers," powerful and wealthy individuals who influence their friends and associates to donate to a politician, raising as much as half a million dollars per bundler. If Mitt Romney is allowed to win the presidency without disclosing these sources, it will set a dangerous new precedent of secrecy which will endanger the ability of voters to judge the financial integrity of a candidate.
