Countless American children & grandchildren--both minors and adults--are robbed of our inheritances because our mom or dad remarried a stepmom or stepdad, who, as a SPOUSE, has unlimited rights to inherit, even to the TOTAL EXCLUSION of us, our siblings, and our children. Our family lost everything because our STEPMOM of 18 years, whom we loved and trusted, inherited all Dad's estate as his "spouse." We, Dad's kids and grandkids, got NOTHING. Then Stepmom evicted us from Dad's home and never saw us again. She had only married Dad for his money and property. This horror could not have happened if our rights had been protected by a law that limited Stepmom's inheritance rights. This petition calls for such limitation. LIMIT the inheritance rights of ANY step-spouse who marries a man or woman with blood or adopted children, grandchildren, siblings, etc. Your step-parent's inheritance claim on your parent's estate must be NO GREATER than your own. Such legislation will also put an end to questionable wills that unexpectedly disinherit us children or leave ALL to a step-parent (or to his/her children) while TOTALLY EXCLUDING your own blood or adopted family members. In return, the step-parent's own children are equally protected, as NO step-parent can inherit more than a parent's natural or adopted children. Predatory step-parents destroy families. The numbers are frightening. Don't be fooled by loving promises without laws to back them up: remember that WE were fooled for 18 years. There are far more Cinderellas in our country than there are Brady Bunches. The estate you save could be your own.

When Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the Archbishop of New York and President of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, delivered the benediction at the Democratic and Republican conventions, he told reporters that he was there only to pray, not to endorse a candidate. But back in his very own archdiocese, a Catholic parish is distributing an endorsement of Mitt Romney. In last Sunday's bulletin, a parish priest reprinted a letter from former Vatican ambassadors which concludes: "We urge our fellow Catholics, and indeed all people of good will, to join with us in this full-hearted effort to elect Governor Mitt Romney as the next President of the United States." Cardinal Dolan's constant incendiary attacks on President Obama's health care policies have created a situation in which a priest in his very own diocese thinks it's acceptable to use a Sunday bulletin for partisan politics. If he's serious about staying out of this election, Dolan must instruct his priests to refrain from distributing partisan campaign materials and issue a pastoral letter clarifying that the church is not endorsing Mitt Romney. Governor Lepage is planning to cut Medicaid from 36,000 young people and low income parents in order to "balance the budget". This effort is not only shortsighted but it will save any money. This cost will be shifted to the taxpayers and many more people will suffer from poor health.

In this time when allergies run rampant and we are beginning to realize the danger of certain natural and man-made substances, it is incumbant that we change food labeling laws. We are asking simply that the companies that feed us be required to a full disclosure of the ingredients of their products. We find it unacceptable that currently many potentially harmful ingredients can be hidden under lump naming systems under such labels as natural and/or artificial flavorings. Key ingredients such as monosodium glutamate are often hidden under such monikers causing all types of health issues for innocent people who would like to be able to know what is in their products. Additionally, laws should be changed to reflect reality with regards to label claims. Items containing hydrogenated oils below a certain threshold should not be able to be legally mislabeled free of transfats as this is false and misleading even if a very small of transfats exist in the product. The same should go for other types of fats in the use of the label "fat free". The definition of "free" should legally be the same as the dictionary's meaning i.e., none! Therefor a fat-free product should be in fact free of all fats. We feel that this will help safeguard the health of ourselves and our children as well as help people confidently eat knowing that they are assuredly not compromising their religious, moral, or health beliefs.

Stay at home moms, who now have grown children, and men and women over 50 needing to return to the work force, have a hard time getting work, now competing with a younger generation. We need an opportunity to be trained and able to work again, not feeling like we're outcasts because we've dedicated our lives to raising our children, or because of age.

For 200 years, the residents of the nation's capital--the District of Columbia--have lived without the same political rights and privileges that every other American enjoys. Congress, a body in which DC residents have no formal representation, exercises complete control over the District's budget and local laws, and did not even allow DC residents to vote in elections until 1962. The only permanent and lasting way to give DC citizens equal political rights to all other Americans is to admit the District to the Union as the 51st state. Doing so only requires a simple majority vote in Congress--not a constitutional amendment. Yet the Democratic Party, in its platform and official statements, refuses to express support for this only true solution. It only makes vague, generic references to giving DC representation in Congress, and refused to allow statehood advocates to speak at the 2012 Democratic National Convention. We are calling on the Democratic National Committee to take a strong stand in favor of legislation that would make the District of Columbia a state, finally giving full democracy and local autonomy to 600,000 disenfranchised Americans.

Since the U.S. Supreme Court decided that corporations have the right to contribute an unlimited amount of resources to political campaigns, they must make a matching donation payable to the U.S. Treasury.

Although the death penalty is used in many countries, the absence of transparent due processes and competent judicial institutions, coupled with ambiguous constitutional provisions relating to the death penalty, make it unsafe for its continued retention in Gambia.
