Atlas Shrugged...Really, Paul Ryan?Get the word out that Paul Ryan claims reading Atlas Shrugged inspired him into public service. What would Ayn Rand, author of Atlas Shrugged, think of Paul Ryan's policies? "Abortion is a moral right - which should be left to the sole discretion of the woman involved; morally, nothing other than her wish in the matter is to be considered. Who can conceivably have the right to dictate to her what disposition she is to make of the functions of her own body?" -- Ayn Rand2 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Gaviota A. Ortiz

Paul Ryan: Meet With The People You're HurtingMy name is Maria Morales. I'm a grandmother from Racine, Wisconsin, and I'm a constituent of Rep. Paul Ryan, the new Republican candidate for vice president. I don't like to complain, but this year has been very difficult for me. After being laid off, I had an appendectomy, and then my doctors told me I have three clogged arteries in my brain. My son has a spinal cord condition. The health care bills are piling up, and I rely on my unemployment insurance to survive. That's why I was so concerned when I found out that my representative, Paul Ryan, was leading efforts to cut off unemployment insurance for people like me. He's also cut Medicaid and wants to end Medicare, which would really be devastating. I first requested a meeting with Paul Ryan more than a year ago to discuss how his policies are hurting people like me. My hope was that he would hear my story and reconsider. At the very least I deserve to have my voice heard. I am still waiting for that meeting. I have called Paul Ryan's office again and again, willing to meet anywhere for even just a few minutes. I've even gone to DC to try to meet him there. Later, when I and some other people from my community dropped by his office, his staff called the police. Eventually I got so fed up that I went to his office and simply refused to leave. I waited for 7 days, and still I'm waiting. I can't find work, and this December, my jobless benefits will run out. Then I really don't know what I will do, and there are many others in my community with similar situations. During last year's summer recess, which was an entire month long, Rep. Ryan didn't hold a single town hall meeting in his district. But he did meet with high donors numerous times. I think it's wrong that my congressman has time to meet with large funders, but not the people he's hurting in his district. I'm asking Rep. Paul Ryan to find time, even a few minutes, to meet with me. I'll even just meet on the phone, since his schedule is busy. I ask Paul Ryan to stop dodging his constituents and meet with me, Racine resident Maria Morales, and the other people in my community hurt by his cuts to unemployment insurance, health care, and other programs.8 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Maria Morales

Registering Disenfranchised VotersMy petition is about getting disenfranchised voters registered by creating mobile registration vehicles (van or panel truck) to go into the areas where there are the most people who haven't been able to go, for numerous reasons. I would see this registration as independent of either political party (although they would be able to register as D or R or L, same as now.3 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Victoria Oliver

Mr. President: Recall the CongressCongress adjourned without the House picking up or acting on the Senate Farm Bill, in the face of the worst heat and drought of U.S. History. Constitutionally (Article II, Section 3) to call Congress back into session and not let them adjourn "on exceptional occasions." The House should meet and pass a bill at this time of crisis, and an agreed final bill passed and signed.2 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Tom Dooling

Olympic competitionWe all love the Olympics but its original intent seems to have been lost. For decades, it was only open to absolute amateurs and now professional athletes are involved in the mix. This seems tremendously unfair to those who do not get paid and yet to have recognition. Amateurs representing lesser known countries should be rewarded for their efforts and contributions to international relations - not pros who already have benefitted. Please help our voices be heard to limit the competition!1 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Alison Freeman

Pledge to vote for centrist politicians.Citizen's United has tilted the playing fields of politics to both extremes. Unregulated money poisons our politics and allows special interests to shape public opinion. End Minimum Balance Fee Abuse by the BanksAny average American who has a bank account knows the ever-present threat of the Minimum Balance Fee -- that insidious fee the bank charges you when your balance falls below the level of money they insist you keep in your account. Granted, this is nothing new in the banking industry. But why in the world should we pay the bank to lend it our money? Well, knowing full well that there isn't a US Congressman who has the gumption to stand fully against the banks on the matter of charging minimum balance fees, I propose a compromise: Whereas most banks will open a checking account for as little as $25, but require their customers to maintain a minimum balance of $1,500 to avoid fees (which is quite a large gap), and knowing that the average customer is often stretched to keep that much cash at the bank's disposal and, consequently, out of their own reach, it is obvious that the banks do this in order to rape their lower-income clients. It is an insidious practice, as it puts many customers into debt the moment they begin lending the bank their money, Therefore, I propose that Congress pass legislation that makes it illegal for a bank to open a checking or savings account for any amount below their minimum balance requirement. The benefit of this is that banks will either have to accept a significant loss in new clients (which they don't want), or they will have to severely drop their minimum balance requirements to levels attainable by a much greater number of Americans. Furthermore, I propose that Congress also pass legislation forbidding banks from charging overdraft (NSF) fees on accounts that they have service-charged into overdraft status. If assessing a service charge will effectively wipe out an account, the bank should be limited to only one of two actions: either forgo the service charge, or forgo the overdraft fee. No more double-dipping! There are laws against auto mechanics breaking things in your car and then charging you to fix them, or doctors intentionally introducing viruses into your body and then charging you for the cure. Charging an NSF fee after creating an overdraft in a customer's account is the same rotten practice, and should definitely be made illegal. Please sign and pass this petition along to your friends!3 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Andrew Gage
