• Tell the Unicameral: Vote No on TransCanada’s LB1161, Stop the “Pipeline Six”
Six of the eight members of the Nebraska Unicameral’s Natural Resources Committee have become pro-pipeline activists, voting through their committee a bill that would give TransCanada a free pass to determine a pipeline route through Nebraska and to seize private property through eminent domain on a “fast track.” LB1161 circumvents existing Nebraska state law that would require any major oil pipeline project to first obtain approval through a Nebraska Public Service Commission process. LB1161 would set a dangerous precedent by allowing a foreign corporation (which currently has no pending permit for a pipeline) to enact immediate powers of eminent domain, as if they were a public utility with the proper authority and permits. The unicameral worked hard during the special session in November to pass laws that would give Nebraskans input and oversight over where and how pipelines would cross our state. Now, following the lead of TransCanada-loving Jim Smith (LD14), five other Natural Resources Committee senators Tom Carlson (LD38), Mark Christensen (LD44), Chris Langemeier (LD23), Beau McCoy (LD39) and Ken Schilz (LD47) are taking their pro-pipeline activism to the rest of the unicameral for a vote. It seems the “Pipeline Six” are in TransCanada’s pocket, doing anything they ask rather than representing Nebraska citizens and our natural resources. Nebraskans deserve better. We deserve leaders who represent our interests, not the interests of a foreign corporation. We demand leaders who will take necessary action to protect and preserve our state’s land and water--not corporate puppets that will do anything in their power to ensure this pipeline is built. We will not allow this political pandering of a few state senators willing to sell out our state’s natural resources and our people’s personal property rights to their Big Oil buddies.

  • An Easier Economy
This petition is for a national plan to lower domestic energy consumption through strict conservation, increase fossil and nuclear production, and then export that energy for money. Using the taxes from those sales, we would pay down America's debt, bring affordable water and energy back to our people, and then have an ongoing export surpluses in energy for the next 50-100 years.

  • Save Washington State Classified Employees from 3% Temporary Salary Reduction (TSR)
The Governor of the State of Washington has mandated a 3% salary reduction for classified employees effective July 1, 2012 in order to close the gap on the budget deficit in Washington state. The Governor is in a position to reverse her decision to implement these cuts in the upcoming budget. We are calling on her to stand up on behalf of Classified employees who are already underpaid and stop the 3% Salary Reduction. Please note that with the lack of classified employees not receiving the cost of living raise (COLA) for the past 4 years plus no salary wage increase along with reducing their salaries another 3%, if you combined those together this will give you a better picture as to what is happening to this underpaid and underrepresented group of employees.

  • Allow apprenticeships/mentorships for unemployed persons over 40 years old
There are hundreds of thousands of unfilled jobs in the United States due to a shortage of skilled workers. There are millions of unemployed older workers who want to learn these new career skills. This program would facilitate the rapid deployment of new career mentorships/apprenticeships without offering workers compensation for a short period of time. Under most of today's state and federal laws this is impossible.

  • Economic Advancement for Kentucky
It is time for Kentucky to embrace the factors that create a stronger, more flexible and global workforce. Those factors are education, entrepreneurship, and economic development. It is our responsibility to desire education, but the governments responsibility to provide it. Not only our schools, but also our colleges should be more job and skill focused. By creating an education system based on creating skilled students to meet those opportunities we will be ahead of the curve, by creating the curves. If the economic data supports an increase in railways in Kentucky, maybe it is time to offer advanced courses in railway engineering, etc. By involving ourselves in removing the curriculum that creates junk degrees and leaves disillusioned college graduates and high school graduates who don't compare with foreign countries we will be preparing ourselves for the future, and for right now. Entrepreneurship is difficult, but ultimately the number one creator of jobs. Our state already succeeds at having low government barriers to entry for entrepreneurs it was eight dollars to register your business and now I believe it is just sales tax and a 1% tax on profit(although since most profit is made at the margins this is more harmful than helpful). The next barrier is capital. We need to encourage local banks to issue more entrepreneurship loans, backed by collateral or to offer education on entrepreneurship and have the government create banking incentives for the banks that do offer these trainings. By increasing access to capital for Kentuckians we will be encouraging their successes and failures, both of which will teach people more about business and about life in general. Economic development, this one is huge. How to encourage more businesses to the area, tax breaks, cheap labor, beautiful scenery? I think having devoted staff giving tours, and showing the economic benefits at the same time would be an excellent way to advance business in the state. Also, launching a doing business in Kentucky magazine that could focus on specific trades and industries to be distributed free of charge to other trade magazines as an advertising bundle with their latest issue could be another step. Ultimately, the ideas are out there and it is in the government's best interest to advance industry in the state and to start looking for small international competitors to increase FDI, raise unemployment, and to globalize the Kentucky workforce. Everyone who has signed this petition agrees, it is time for Kentucky to spread our Commonwealth(our intelligence, hard work, and loyalty) to the rest of the world, and reap the benefits.
