Gays and lesbians deserve the same civil and political rights that we all enjoy. Government should not impede upon these rights. It is not the role of the government to decide who gets to love each other and who doesn't. We should recognize these marriages as valid and make them equal to any other marriage.

Today you can get a loan to buy a used car for less than 3%, but current and recent Alaska Student Loan Corporation loan rates range from roughly 6.25% to 9%. Please support House Bill 272 to reduce the principal of your Alaska student loan annually by 2.5%, and help Alaskans stay in Alaska and return to Alaska. A 2.5% annual principal reduction is the equivalent of a 3% reduction in the student loan interest rate. In many states public access to fishing streams is blocked by the sale of land to private landowners who restrict access, require exorbitant fees, or rent space for short periods of time. House Bill 144 would protect and enhance the right of Alaskans to enjoy our unparalleled fishing streams into the future by helping ensure that fishing stream access is not sold or developed. The City of Elk Point currently has no law that requires an in- home day care provider to be registered. Registration or licensing would give Child Protective Services the authority to take action should a care provider be criminally charged. Currently, there is no agency that has that authority unless the day care is registered.

In January resolutions were filed in the WV Legislature opposing the Supreme Court ruling that Corporations are people and should be allowed to spend unlimited funds on elections. On March 1, 2012, Indefinite Detention became the law of the land! There are reasons to fear it will be used to restrict freedom of speech and assembly of US citizens. The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA 2012), now authorizes the US government to treat suspected terrorists by a different standard. Under this law, people, even US citizens, can be detained indefinitely by the US military and, according to recent statements by US Attorney General Eric Holder, even killed without a trial to prove their guilt. They can also be tried by a Military Commission (fewer due process rights and the Judge and “Jury” are military officers) and can be sent into the custody of foreign governments. These provisions are contrary to Constitutionally granted 5th and 6th Amendment rights of legal counsel, due process and speedy and public trial by an impartial jury. This petition asks the US Congress and the President, in compliance with their oath to support and defend the Constitution, to change the provisions of NDAA 2012 that authorize Government actions that are in violation of our Constitutional rights. A critical issue to the very existence of the fine wine industry in New York has been brought to our attention and we wanted to make you aware of it. One of the largest liquor wholesalers is lobbying the State Senate to include an “at rest” provision in their 2012 budget. The practical effect of “at rest” means that only those distributors delivering product out of New York warehouses could legally sell you wine. Legislation such as this would affect essentially every wholesaler currently in operation other than the two biggest ones, since they almost all warehouse in New Jersey, including our company. Imagine a landscape with only the two largest wholesalers remaining to work with. Selections would become painfully limited. Prices would most certainly rise. Service would plummet. Their pro-“at rest” argument (union warehouse jobs and revenue) is simply a veiled attempt by this wholesaler to destroy all of the fine wine wholesale competition, because most of your valued New York wholesalers would undoubtedly be forced to close their doors. We have contacted our State Senators to tell them that we oppose “at rest” in either legislation or budget language. We urge you to do the same before FRIDAY, MARCH 9th.
