The South leads the country in new diagnoses of HIV/AIDS. Death rates in the South are among the highest in the US — 9 of the 10 states with the highest age-adjusted HIV case death rates are in the South. African Americans are disproportionally represented among new HIV diagnoses in the South. 50% of men and 71% of women diagnosed with HIV in the South were African American.

The current age to have automatic independent status to receive financial aid is 24. We would like to lower that age to 21 to accommodate more students who are currently unable to qualify for financial aid because they have to file as a dependent. Students should not be denied access to education based on their parents income when they can determine their independence prior to age 24.

Hundreds of predatory lenders target & then literally rob American soldiers while they fight to defend our nation. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau was created to protect our troops, but it can’t do its job until it has a director. Right now, Senate Republicans are busy playing politics, & refusing to confirm Richard Cordray's nomination. On Veterans Day, we will deliver our petition to the Senate GOP demanding that they quit playing games & support our troops.

Grover Norquist, a private citizen not an elected official, has developed a tax pledge that most Republican legislator's have signed. My petition is to inform the American people about the pledge and to have all legislators that we support to renounce the pledge.

There is a small area of land that is untouched by humans. There are beautiful trails, beautiful trees, and it's a small place for many animals to call there home. Every fall, hundreds of birds flock to these woods for a quick food stop as they migrate. This area needs to stay up so that it isn't sold when housing development pushes through. This area of land is located in Hampshire, IL. I want to get permission from him to survey the land myself.

President Obama is working diligently to address unemployment, housing foreclosures, and the burdens of student loans. He cannot do this alone. He needs aggressive and vigorous support from Congress. Injuries received on the job may cause health problems later on in life. Workers who find that previous injuries prevent them from obtaining employment, or giving rise to new health damages should be able to re-open their claims to receive their proper compensation. This will encourage insurance companies to insist on discovering/ disclosing all health outcomes to workers.

Occupy Wall Street has exploded and the momentum must not be squandered. We need a massive, peaceful march in Washington to show support for the reforms we want.
