Stop protecting bad cops! Drop your opposition to the police transparency bill!California police unions are leading a fight to stop a landmark police transparency law from fully taking effect. If they win, the public will lose the right to know whether police officers have been accused of excessive force, sexual assault, and other official wrongdoing that took place before this year. Until January 1, 2019, California police officers' disciplinary records were kept under lock and key. Journalists couldn't find out whether a police officer had a record of excessive force complaints. The public wasn't permitted to learn if the cops in their neighborhood had been accused of sexual assault on the job. Even attorneys defending their clients in court couldn't directly find out whether an officer had a record of lying on the stand or falsifying reports. That all changed when Senate Bill 1421 took effect. California's police unions are fighting to prevent SB 1421 from applying retroactively. In Los Angeles, San Francisco, and elsewhere, police unions have filed lawsuits to prevent disciplinary records from being released. Citing the police unions' efforts, the California Department of Justice has not honored public records requests from news organizations. Some police departments have even destroyed old records, preventing the public from ever accessing them. And some activists have reported exorbitant fees for disciplinary records requests meant to discourage requests. Making disciplinary records publicly available helps us hold police officers accountable for bad behavior, hold police departments accountable for appropriate training and discipline, and hold city governments accountable for exercising appropriate oversight over police forces. Police unions want to help their members avoid accountability when they act out of accordance with community standards, even at the cost of public safety and good relationships between police departments and the communities they serve. This has to end. We call on California's police unions, police departments, and public officials to immediately begin fully complying with SB 1421. They must drop any legal opposition to retroactively releasing police disciplinary records, and quickly honor public records requests at a reasonable cost to the public.672 of 800 SignaturesCreated by William Winters

Rear-facing blue emergency lights for tow trucksWe are petitioning for rear facing blue lights on tow trucks in Texas and across the united states. we would like to use the rear facing blue lights just as state highway workers are allowed. But only while working on an active roadway while stationary picking up vehicles. This would be life saving if implemented.1,542 of 2,000 SignaturesCreated by Geoffrey Nienstedt

Rename the Kibbie Dome the Kibbie VaultWe all know what a Dome is and it is a cruel injustice that the University of Idaho has named its indoor sports arena/complex after such a shape when it is so clearly not a 'dome'. Really, it looks more like a tipped over tin can. Architecturally speaking it would make much more sense for the enclosure to be called the "Kibbie Vault" due to the series of vaults holding up the roof, or even the "Kibbie Quonset Hut". SIgn this petition to end the confusion this cruel misnomer has caused.19 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Gabrielle Keim

2020 Candidates: Skip AIPAC conferenceAny progressive vying to be the Democratic nominee for president should skip the AIPAC conference. Here are four reasons why: #1. AIPAC spent tens millions of dollars in 2015 to defeat the Iran nuclear deal negotiated by President Obama along with our European and international allies––a historic diplomatic agreement that Trump has tried to derail since taking office. #2. This year's AIPAC conference is headlined by Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel, under whose leadership, according to the U.N., Israel may have committed war crimes in attacks on Gaza. Netanyahu has also been indicted on bribery and fraud charges, and he recently made a deal to bring the "Israeli KKK" ultra-racist party into the next government. #3. AIPAC has been known to peddle anti-Muslim and anti-Arab rhetoric while giving platforms to Islamophobes. #4. AIPAC has refused to condemn the antisemitism of Republicans, such as Trump’s friend and advisor Steve Bannon. Bannon’s wife reported that he had their kids removed from a school because of “the number of Jews that attend”, and that “he didn’t want the girls going to school with Jews. While many groups condemned Bannon, Politico reported that AIPAC “declined to weigh in." Many candidates have now confirmed they are not attending the conference. And it is time for others to join them!145 of 200 SignaturesCreated by Iram Ali, MoveOn Political Action

2020 presidential candidates must debate environmental policy #climatedebateLet's be clear. With the magnitude of the oncoming climate crisis it's no longer sufficient to have a single token environmental question that 2020 candidates get to brush off with a soundbite. We need an entire debate on environmental policies. The global and US Youth Climate Strike's success and interest in environmental policies such as the Green New Deal resolution are signs that the public wants governmental action on the issue of climate change. As we see increasing domestic and global devastation from fires, floods, and everything in between, we need to be discussing environmental policy much more, therefore we are calling for a debate or forum around concrete solutions. We're calling on all 2020 Democratic candidates to take part in a debate or forum around environmental issues. The Washington Post reported that a forum will occur October of 2019 by the Human Rights Campaign and UCLA School of Public Affairs around LGBTQ issues where "Democratic presidential candidates will be invited to participate in a forum focused exclusively on LGBT policies ... they will discuss topics related to hate crimes, bullying and transgender rights." That's an excellent idea and an inspiration for our own organizing. Let's ensure environmental issues from climate change, access to clean water, environmental racism, and everything in between that are disproportionately impacting people of color and working class folks are given the serious attention they deserve. Let's be sure we hear how candidates plan to stop companies accountable for polluting our water and air and what they think about opening up federal land to fracking, drilling, and trophy hunting. Let's have an open mind as they discuss the ways we can shift to renewable energy while keeping the economy and jobs secure. Sign our petition and let's show all the 2020 candidates, the media, and the Democratic National Committee (DNC) that young people can lead as the catalyst for such important discussions that affect every single one of us. Thank you.
