We, the community groups and individuals who cherish the Museum for its dedication to serving our cultural and educational interests and aspirations, demand for representation on the governing board and in the search for the CEO successor.

We will stand together to block attacks to Food Stamps! The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a federally funded program that feeds over 43 million Americans. Harsher work requirements and proposed cuts to the 2018 Farm Bill will put food assistance at risk for millions of working and unemployed households. Food is a human right and not just meant for the privileged few! We will deliver this petition to Michigan Governor Rick Snyder, the US Congress, and the Michigan state legislature.

Bernie Sanders has joined the movement to #EndMoneyBail by introducing a bill in the Senate which would eliminate wealth-based pretrial practices! Activists have been organizing to fight against bail bond profiteers that are preying on low-income people of color who are disproportionately impacted by every aspect of the criminal justice system. The prison profiteer bail industry is working in states around the country to block grassroots bail reform initiatives which will lower mass incarceration rates and help keep families together. But the good news is that bail reform is moving quickly in many different communities. States like New Jersey and New Mexico passed reform policies, other states are attempting similar legislation, and the No More Money Bail Act has been already introduced by Representative Ted Lieu in the House. With such a strong backing at such a crucial time, it’s obvious bail reform is obtainable. But we must act now to solidify its success and make sure we dismantle the money bail system for the entire nation.

My name is Tye Smith, I am an American citizen in desperate need of your help. I am married with a six year old daughter living in Cabot Arkansas for the last seven years. My wife Rosa Palacios is from Peru she originally came to the United States back in 2007 on a visitors visa and again in 2010 which is when I met her and we fell in love. She accidentally over stayed her visa by 11 days but didn't realize it until she tried to come back to the US a month after returning to Peru. She was detained at the airport and sent back to Peru. I went to visit her in Peru three different times the second in which we were married. Also on the second visit we got pregnant. Due to my medical conditions I could not stay in Peru with her for longer than two months at a time. I have had several back surgeries and have a Pain Pump that is inserted into my stomach which I have to get refilled every two and a half months. It was not financially possible to keep going back and forth over and over again and even if that was possible they do not have the technology to refill my Medtronics pain pump. Upon returning to the US I filed a K1 fiancé visa for her. I waited and waited and after not having heard and my wife being seven months pregnant, we decided it would be best to bring her to Mexico and live in a border town and I could work on the US side. After being there in Nuevo Laredo for about a month and actually seeing people get shot and hung from bridges we were scared to death not only for us but for our unborn daughter and could no longer continue with our plans to stay there waiting for her Visa approval. As much as we didn't want to do it this way, we decided to try and come back to the US and were detained at the border. Due to my wife being seven months pregnant they released her to me as long as we checked in each year so that is what we did. We checked in year after year with immigration waiting for our turn to go in front of a judge however when we showed up to check in last June with immigration they told us that she had to leave the US. We were caught way off guard. They said we have no right to have our case heard and she had ten days to leave the Country. Our attorney called immigration asking if there was anything at all we could do and was told that due to my medical condition being unable to take care of our daughter on my own we could file for a Stay of Removal. We were granted the stay last year and was told to file again each year due to my condition getting gradually worse however when our attorney filed for the stay last month we were told this week that we were denied and that she has two weeks to buy a plane ticket and leave the country. We are in desperate need of help, I don't know how much longer I am going to be able to work with my back being so bad and cannot take care of my daughter alone. Also, i have no family close by to help out therefore I need my wife more now than ever. I am asking you to please help, please look at her case they have given us a date of August 1st to have the plane ticket and August 11th to leave the country. Thank you so much, Tye Smith

This month, Attorney General Jeff Sessions and the Department of Justice settled a critical lawsuit. Forfeiting the case, they chose to allow blueprints for firearms--from pistols to assault weapons--to be posted online. Now, anyone with a 3-D printer and WiFi can make their own AR-15. This could mean convicted felons, domestic abusers, and terrorists can print guns with no background check and no consequence. Luckily, more than 21 state attorneys general are working to stop this. States from California to Massachusetts are suing the State Department to reverse their decision. Here in Florida, we understand the horrors of gun violence. As a high school senior in Orlando, I know it too. I remember donating blood in the wake of the Pulse massacre or frantically checking on my friends in Parkland this February. I know what it's like to live with the threat of gun violence lurking over my head. Ensure that Attorney General Pam Bondi joins this lawsuit, and defends Floridians' lives. Too much is at risk.

The goal of these attacks on endangered wildlife is clearly to gut the Endangered Species Act in order to benefit fossil fuel interests and other Big Polluters. If they succeed, many endangered species could quickly end up on the path to extinction. We can’t let that happen.

The State of California very recently reported that our County experienced a 40% increase in Hate Crimes in 2017 as compared to 2016! The Commission on Human Rights for Sonoma County, California is a strong advocate for the most basic rights of our most marginalized and needy residents. The Commissioners are appointed and volunteer. The most likely county residents who need their help are......all people of color, the Homeless, disabled, LGBT, Indigenous Peoples, etc. etc.. Our County Government Budget for 2018-2019 eliminated the measly 12 hours a week, of staff support, the meeting room for the Commission to meet residents, and the emergency phone line which needy residents use in an emergency to contact the Commission when they are desperate! The County Government says that the issue is "money." The total cost to the County is only $26,432.60, including benefits, for the measly twelve hours a week of staff support!...out of a 2018-2019 Budget of more than $1.8 billion! No way.... the county's motives are 100% political!! A move right out of the Trump-Playbook. I am a white male. I am a "Senior Citizen." I am not in the demographics which so desperately need our Commission on Human Rights.... but, I do have morality and I care deeply. Please help. Thank you very much.

I am struck by the differences between these two candidates on issues where Dark Money plays a role (PolyMet mining and medical coverage). In my opinion Painter is the stronger candidate yet because he takes no Dark Money many haven't enough information about him

In her confirmation hearing, Kathy Kraninger refused to say whether the common-sense rule reining in payday and car title lending abuses should go forward. She also wouldn’t commit to removing political appointees that Acting Director Mulvaney installed to follow around career Bureau professionals. Kraninger offered no evidence that she would take any concrete steps to actually protect consumers, leaving us all more vulnerable to abuse by Wall Street and predatory lenders. Kraninger has zero experience with Consumer Protection or banking regulation, and won’t commit to continuing the Bureau’s strong record of enforcement. Will you email your Senator, and tell them to oppose Kraninger for the CFPB Director?

In order to make a commitment to cycling as a transportation option it is important to put this on the books. More than 30 years after Idaho passed its law, the evidence suggests that it is a safe and effective reform. In 2008, Jason Meggs contacted Idaho’s Office of Highway and Traffic Safety and analyzed statewide yearly summaries of traffic injuries and fatalities, including summaries by county and mode. His analysis found no evidence of a long-term increase in injury or fatality rates as a result of the adoption of the “Idaho stop” law. In 1983, the year after the law was adopted, bicycle injury rates declined by 14.5 percent and there was no change in the number of bicycle fatalities. When bicyclists in Idaho approach a stop sign they: 1. Slow down, and if required for safety, stop. 2. Yield the right-of-way to any vehicle in the intersection or approaching, if the approaching vehicle will create a hazard while they cross the intersection. 3. Proceed after appropriately slowing and yielding without stopping. When cyclists in Idaho approach a red light they: 1. Stop. 2. Yield to all other traffic. 3. Proceed through the red light with caution.
