• Condemn voter suppression: Our elected officials must protect our freedom to vote
Anti-democracy extremists filed more lawsuits in 2022 than in 2020 – the year that Donald Trump dragged out his election lies in court for months. And worst of all, almost a quarter of these lawsuits were spearheaded by elected officials – hyper-partisan Republicans trying to push an anti-democracy agenda through the courts, rather than fight legislative battles they know they can’t win. The increasing litigation from far-right extremists means we have to expect an all-out attack on our right to vote from partisan legislators this year at every level. They’re eager to make it harder for voters to cast a ballot, especially in Black and Brown communities. Unfortunately, some far-right extremists and failed political candidates would rather throw out legal votes to falsely cling to power than respect our democracy – and it’s up to us to stop them. Abusing our court system to push conspiracy theories and lies about election results or vote-by-mail is no way to legislate. Sign our petition to condemn attempted voter suppression and demand our politicians protect our freedom to vote.

  • REJECT and RESCIND any calls for an Article V Convention
Donald Trump wants to TERMINATE the Constitution – because he’s finally realized that it’s standing in the way of his desperate attempts to overturn the 2020 election over two years after the fact. And while it might sound ridiculous, far-right mega donors and Trump cronies like Steve Bannon are working behind the scenes to do exactly that. Under Article V of the U.S. Constitution, Congress is required to hold a constitutional convention if two-thirds of state legislatures call for one. And right now, we’re just a handful of states away. Exploiting never-before used provisions of Article V of our Constitution, 28 states have signed on to allow unelected, unaccountable delegates to rewrite the Constitution with zero checks and balances. No convention has ever been called under Article V for a reason: there is just too much at stake. Far-right groups like the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) are trying to get this done behind closed doors and out of the public eye. But Common Cause is shining a spotlight on their sinister efforts in state after state – and so far, we have successfully rolled back calls for an Article V Convention in Colorado, New Hampshire, Delaware, and others. We need your help now to protect our Constitution once and for all. Add your name to oppose a dangerous, unregulated convention of states. • Pass the CLEAN Act for ethics in Congress
The Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE) is an independent House ethics watchdog that Common Cause and others worked to create in 2008. It helped clean up corruption and make sure members of Congress were playing by the rules. But right now, there’s no law permanently establishing this office. It only exists in the House rules package – and has to be reauthorized every two years as new House members are elected. It also doesn’t have subpoena power – limiting its ability to enforce any ethical standards. The rules package passed by House Republicans last night weakens this office. The House has made it harder to hire staff at the OCE, and implemented arbitrary term limits that would immediately remove three long-serving Democratic ethics board members – risking decades of institutional knowledge, and majorly weakening oversight in the new Congress. The CLEAN Act would codify this office into law – strengthening the OCE and giving it real power to investigate and enforce consequences for misconduct.

  • Save Boston's Emerald Necklace Riverway Park, Liff Park, and Back Bay Fens!
    + The Back Bay Fens, Justine Mee Liff Park, and The Riverway are among the oldest portions of Frederick Law Olmsteds' Emerald Necklace, serving as an important resource for people and wildlife, and spanning key portions of the Muddy River watershed; and + These parks are visited by thousands of daily users including runners, bikers, walkers, and commuters, serving as sites for the BAA half marathon, art festivals, public art events and environmental classes and as public lands, are meant to serve as respite and resource to a dense and growing community; and + The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently completed a multi-decade flood management program of the Muddy River watershed; and These parklands provide key environmental benefits, increasingly important to Boston's climate resilience. + The proposed building heights in the project are up to 320 feet, and violate both building heights and shadow restrictions under the Longwood Medical Area Interim Guidelines, currently in effect; and + The proposed project will cast significant new shadows (Over 3 hours in some areas) onto the parks, exceeding limits set forth in the Longwood Medical and Academic Area's Interim Guidelines, permanently altering the park's ecosystem and the conditions of human access experience; and will also cast significant new shadows (Over 3 hours in these areas) onto Boston University Wheelock Family Theater, Boston University Fenway Student Center and Residence Halls; and + These impacts will permanently degrade the quality of life of residents, students, workers and park patrons and set dangerous precedent for monetary payments for irreparable loss to public parks;

  • Tell the FTC: Ban noncompete clauses!
The FTC just voted to move forward a rulemaking to ban noncompetes. Noncompete agreements are a cynical, unfair practice utilized by massive corporations to suppress workers’ wages and make it harder for small businesses to succeed.1 Corporations will fight a noncompete ban tooth and nail because it threatens their ability to exploit workers and pad their own profits—but we're fighting back. In a time when millions of Americans are struggling to afford their basic needs, we should be providing more opportunity, not less. Sign the petition: Put an end to noncompetes! Massive corporations should not be able to use this tactic to harm American workers and small businesses. President Biden has already voiced his support for ending noncompetes. Noncompetes “are designed simply to lower people’s wages,” the president said. “These agreements block millions of retail workers, construction workers and other working folks from taking a better job, getting better pay and benefits, in the same field.2 Tell the FTC we’re counting on them to increase American workers’ options and prospects by banning noncompetes! Sign the petition: Ban noncompetes! Sources: New York Times, “U.S. Moves to Bar Noncompete Agreements in Labor Contracts,” January 5, 2023. New York Times, “Middle-Class Pay Lost Pace. Is Washington to Blame?” May 13, 2021.

  • Tell Biden to Protect Transgender Access to Healthcare
It is outrageous to limit anyone’s access to life saving healthcare, and even moreso to raise the bar of access to 26 years old. This is clearly an attempt to eliminate transgender people by eliminating their access to health care. Please stand up for transgender people and tell President Biden to take action and enact Federal protections to access to gender affirming healthcare for transgender people before more states enact these hateful and harmful laws.

  • PROTECT the Office of Congressional Ethics
Here’s what’s going on: The Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE) is an independent House ethics watchdog that Common Cause and others worked to create in 2008. It helped clean up corruption and make sure members of Congress were playing by the rules. Before the OCE, House members served as both judge and jury when considering ethical charges against their colleagues. Too often, there was a mutual “look the other way” understanding in which both parties would excuse each other’s misconduct. Now, Republicans want to go back to those bad old days and hamstring the OCE. They’re planning to make it harder to hire staff at the OCE and implement arbitrary term limits that would target three long-serving Democratic ethics board members – risking decades of institutional knowledge, and majorly weakening oversight in the new Congress.

  • Tell Mark Zuckerberg: Donald Trump cannot rejoin Facebook with a free pass to lie.
Donald Trump could be back on Facebook as soon as Saturday. And, believe it or not, because he’s running for President again Facebook has already declared they’ll give him a free pass from their fact-checking policy! I don’t need to tell you how dangerous this is – the last time Trump’s election lies went unchecked, he abused his massive online megaphone to incite the violent January 6th insurrection – which led to the ban that may now be lifted. Since that deadly day, bipartisan investigators in Congress have uncovered a mountain of evidence showing how Trump’s social media vitriol was like “rocket fuel for extremists” – which means holding his statements to the same factual standards as every other user is the absolute least companies like Facebook and Twitter can do.

  • Tell the DOJ: Act on the criminal referral for Donald Trump
Over the last 17 months, the January 6th House Select Committee has worked around the clock to investigate how Trump and his associates planned, promoted, and paid for the January 6th attack on our country – and how he repeatedly refused to lift a finger to stop it. They’ve uncovered increasingly shocking evidence demonstrating how Trump and his accomplices plotted to undermine our democracy, pushed dangerous election lies, and even wanted to throw out election results. They documented how Trump planned in advance to falsely claim victory regardless of the actual election results. Donald Trump brazenly violated his oath of office, and when his lies and conspiracies led to the horrifying and violent attack on our Capitol, he refused to tell the January 6th insurrectionists to stand down for a gut-wrenching 187 minutes. Now, we have a real chance at accountability – since the January 6th Committee has recommended criminal consequences for Trump’s actions.

  • George Santos Must Resign or Be Expelled
George Santos built his campaign on a series of outrageous and offensive lies, deceiving the voters of New York's 3rd District about his qualifications, work background, and lived experience. His continued presence in the House is a disservice to and disrespect of the people of Long Island. He must resign and give voters a chance to choose a representative who is honest about who they are. Santos's litany of lies is too long to recount: false claims that he is the descendant of Holocaust survivors, fabrications about his education and past employment, glaring gaps about his finances, and more. His excessive campaign spending and the unknown sources of his wealth have also raised flags. Yet Santos continues to dig himself deeper into a hole, while lashing out and avoiding accountability. And instead of coming clean or focusing on his constituents, he'll now be tied up in investigations by local, state, federal, and international authorities because of the long trail of deception and fraud that's just beginning to be uncovered. Santos must resign—and if he doesn't, Congress should expel him from office under their constitutionally granted powers.

  • OPPOSE REZONING GPA22-06 and Z22-17 TOWNHOME/RENTAL DEVELOPMENT IN PEORIA
We believe the requested Rezoning and Land Use Designation Change are not an improvement to the General Plan, nor is this development in scale or does it fit with the identity and character of the surrounding areas. We would hope the Peoria Planning Commission and members of the City Council of Peoria will honor the original intentions of the city of Peoria’s visionaries by rejecting Simpatico’s application.
