• Department of Interior: Reject the brutal hunting and trapping of bears and wolves in Alaska
The U.S. Department of Interior has proposed overturning a ban put into place by President Obama that rightly blocked egregious and cruel methods of killing wildlife on National Park Service lands known as preserves. Among the unethical and offensive methods of wildlife killing that the Department of Interior has proposed be allowed are: The use of donuts, bacon, and other “baits” to attract bears to be shot; The hunting of bears with dogs; Killing of wolves and their pups in their dens; Using blindingly bright spotlights to shoot mother black bears and cubs hibernating in their dens. These methods of killing wildlife are antithetical to “fair chase” hunting and have no place on National Park Service lands. National Park Service Preserves in the remainder of the United States prohibit these methods and there is no rational purpose for allowing them here. We will pass along your comments as part of the 60 day comment period to the National Park Service on Docket ID: NPS-2018-0005 // Regulation Identifier Number (RIN) 1024-AE38, and will also follow up to encourage you to directly comment to ensure your voice is heard.

  • Allow Uber and Lyft to drop off and pick up at Meadows Field Airport
Uber, Lyft, and Meadows Field Airport (BFL) are currently in negotiations with Kern County, California, to reach a contract with the county which will allow rideshares to drop off and pick up passengers curbside/door front at the airport. Currently, passengers requiring service must be dropped off near the property line, the closest one about a quarter mile away, or, drivers have to shut their equipment down early and sneak in as though dropping off a "friend." The driver's penalty if caught, is a $1000 ticket and deactivation (fired). Passengers with disabilities, women traveling alone, and passengers with luggage, have found it especially difficult to walk to the main entrance from the allowable drop-off points (which are not built for pedestrians, not even any sidewalks, and are often busy with traffic), in the early morning hours. Also, not every Uber or Lyft driver is willing to risk the penalty if they get caught, and this often results in a passenger having to cancel that ride and try again looking for a driver who will go, and this often makes them late for their flight. Bakersfield sprawls out, and it often takes a driver 20-30 minutes just to arrive. But the only two taxi companies who are allowed to service BFL, do not have enough cars to keep up with the demand in the early morning hours. No other taxis, no buses, and no rideshare vehicles are currently authorized. The distant vicinity of the airport to the rest of Bakersfield, makes walking impossible. This petition is to show public support to the county, in favor of reaching an agreement with at least one of the rideshare companies, soon. Bakersfield is growing very quickly in general. BFL is adding flights and building more runways, and the need to drop off passengers at the door is growing every day, especially for disabled passengers. During the day there are also plenty of people trying to access the hangars, rental car companies and other venues located within airport property. We drivers want to give our passengers the service they deserve, safely, to and from this airport. Many of our passengers have said they would be willing to pay a fee to get the curbside service, similar to LAX. The airport is hoping to have a contract in place sometime this summer. Uber and Lyft drivers have created this petition in hopes that it will help speed the process along, by the show of public support. If you live anywhere in the world and you have been affected by the lack of transportation services to or from Meadows Field Airport (BFL) in Bakersfield, California, or if you have had a driver who had to sneak you in or out, please sign this petition. Thank you.

  • Governor Scott, Federal Highway Administrator, Mayor Weinberger: Stop the Dangerous, Wasteful, ...
Every Burlington resident gets hurt in the unsafe, dangerous wasteful $43 million design. This petition follows two years of grassroots efforts by the Pine Street Coalition and concerned residents. Public comment ended in 2006 with the design done when no Complete Streets Law existed, no best practices of today including roundabouts and cycle track. The neighborhood changed rapidly but the design did not!

  • Make OPC youth soccer recreation leagues co-ed
My daughter (now age 7) has been wanting to be able to play soccer with all of her friends, which includes girls AND boys. She doesn't understand why boys and girls, who play together at school and church, can't play soccer together. Frankly, I can't explain it to her, either. She asked me a while ago to start this petition on her behalf.

  • Governor Brown : Declare a Homelessness State of Emergency
California is facing an unprecedented emergency of homelessness, with 135,000 of our community members unhoused, and 68% of them - almost 100,000 - living unsheltered. Our state has 12% of the nation's population, but 22% of the nation's homeless. The magnitude of this humanitarian emergency and the human suffering it represents cannot be met by cities and counties on their own. We are the fifth largest economy in the world, but without a safety net in place, the current wave of prosperity has harsh unintended consequences for California’s most vulnerable. As with other recent tragic disasters that displaced and harmed huge numbers of Californians, this statewide crisis clearly warrants an emergency response, and we are calling for the State’s help. Governor Brown has the power to call a State of Emergency when there exist “conditions of . . . extreme peril to the safety of persons and property … which, by reason of their magnitude, are or are likely to be beyond the control of the services, personnel, equipment, and facilities of any single county, city, and county, or city. ” Clearly, homelessness is a state of extreme peril to the safety of persons and property within the State of California, and conditions have reached a magnitude that is beyond the control of the services, personnel, equipment, and facilities of cities and counties alone. Governor Brown, we call on you to declare a Homelessness State of Emergency, to help California’s overwhelmed cities and counties provide emergency shelter, healthcare, and housing to those who have lost their homes.

  • State AGs: Investigate NFL Blacklist Of Colin Kaepernick
The New York Times recently reported on audio they received of an October 2017 meeting between NFL owners and players in which player representatives said they believed Colin Kaepernick, the quarterback who started the “take a knee” protests, was being blackballed by the league’s owners. There is some evidence to support that theory. This raises several issues. First of all, the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement specifically prohibits discrimination on the basis of political viewpoint. NFL rules (which are guidelines) also require players to stand at attention during the national anthem. They claim the right to do so as private-sector employers. However, several states (including some with NFL teams) have laws against blacklisting former employees. Colin Kaepernick is uniquely affected by blacklisting, because there is only one National Football League in the United States. Another issue is that the owners made clear in the Times report that they were not eager to attract further criticism from Donald Trump. But that brings us to 18 U.S. Code § 227, which states that no employee of the legislative or executive branch can wrongfully influence employment decisions. Kaepernick is currently involved in a civil suit accusing the NFL of collusion, but this is also a serious public matter that chilled freedom of speech. President Trump has no legal right to prevent Kaepernick from making a living in his specialized area. The NFL shouldn’t get to have it both ways by clamping down on political views as private employers while taking public funds for their stadiums. Sign the petition if you agree that the Attorneys General in the states that host an NFL franchise should investigate this case and protect players from viewpoint discrimination. You may also contact your Attorney General or State’s Attorney directly in the following states where NFL teams are located: AZ, CA, CO, FL, GA, IL, IN, LA, MD, MA, MI, MN, MO, NJ, NY, NC, OH, PA, TN, TX, WA, and WI. • Tell BlackRock to stop funding rainforest destruction and conflict palm oil!
A new investigation by Friends of the Earth has revealed that a palm oil company in Liberia continues to drive deforestation, habitat destruction, and human rights violations in some of the most dense rainforests in West Africa. These findings show that Golden Veroleum Liberia (GVL) is actively destroying rainforests that are home to chimpanzees, hippos, and thousands of people who have lived and worked upon these lands for generations. BlackRock, the multi-trillion dollar Wall Street asset manager, is invested in the company that backs GVL. BlackRock has recently proclaimed itself a leader in responsible investing. We need to let them know that their support of this abuse and environmental destruction is unacceptable.

  • Tell the Department of the Interior: No drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge!
The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Northern Alaska provides important habitat for polar bears, caribou, and rare migratory birds. The area’s wildlife has supported the indigenous Gwich’in people for thousands of years. But the Trump administration is poised to open up this important ecosystem to oil and gas drilling. If this plan goes through, it would be catastrophic for the people and wildlife who call the Refuge home. We need your help to stop it!
