Donald Trump's executive order sets into motion a potential collapse of markets for individuals and small businesses — hiking costs and gutting consumer protections for people with pre-existing conditions.

I don't want my representative in the pocket of the NRA. We need common sense gun reform now! I can't compete with the NRA.

Trump poses an existential danger. The appropriate Constitutional method to remove this danger is impeachment. Congress must act.

In 2005 we lost a family member to gun violence. He was my spouses former brother-in-law. He and his wife were visiting a friend in a nice neighborhood when a home invasion caused him to attempt to flee to protect his wife. They made it into the back yard where he was shot in the back as he pushed his wife into the cover of shrubbery. She watched him die and then fled as the gunman went back into the house. To this day she is still deeply affected. Her husband was a retired Army recruiter. These guarantees were brought to justice and we attended the trial but it will happen again. There are too many guns in the hands of irresponsible as well as criminal members of our society. I also lost a step brother, a well loved coach and high school teacher, to suicide with the Colt 45 he inherited from his father. Gun laws must change. I know I am not the only one to have these losses.

The State of Illinois recently ranked in the top 10 states with the highest tax burden in the country. People living on fixed incomes are trapped between a rock and a hard place. This exemption from certain sales taxes for qualified senior citizens will provide real relief for the men and women who have worked hard and paved the way for future generations in Illinois.

President Trump and Republicans are pushing a trojan horse through Congress. This trojan horse is a budget bill that will deliver massive tax cuts to the wealthy and big corporations and pay for those tax cuts by slashing health care and other important programs. Over the next 10 years, the U.S. House of Representatives budget bill would cut $2 trillion from Medicaid, Medicare, Affordable Care Act subsidies, and other health care programs. The U.S. Senate bill would cut $1.8 trillion from these programs. 80% of the tax cuts funded would go to the wealthiest 1% of Americans.

My dear father-in-law was a life member of the NRA, and the kindest person I have ever known. He would never never understand this carnage and is probably weeping up in Heaven right now. Yes, now is the time to stop the devastating control of the NRA.

The Academy should revoke Harvey Weinstein's membership and send a strong message that sexual predatory behavior will not be tolerated. Survivors of sexual violence and harassment deserve better.

President Trump is too erratic to have decision-making control of the use of nuclear weapons.

Our democracy relies on a free, fair, and adversarial press to hold power accountable. It’s one of the reasons we have a First Amendment. But President Trump continues to escalate his attacks on journalists -- recently threatening to take away NBC’s broadcast license for reporting what he claims is “Fake News.” To be perfectly clear, Trump has absolutely no right or ability to make good on this threat. The law doesn’t let the President revoke broadcast licenses.. If Trump tried to, it would be blatant and unacceptable intervention in the decisions of the Federal Communications Commission, an independent agency. But we can’t allow this President to continue to bully and attack journalists for doing their jobs -- just because they’re reporting news he doesn’t like. It’s not just NBC stations that will find this threat chilling, but also smaller independent stations around the country who might lack the resources to fight back. This isn’t the first time President Trump has attacked journalists he believed were treating him unfairly. During the campaign, Trump pledged to “open up” libel laws to make it easier to sue news organizations -- and earlier this year he branded them an “enemy of the American People.” This sort of attack on the free press undermines our democracy. We are not an authoritarian state -- Americans expect the media to hold Donald Trump and anyone else with political power accountable.
