• Free Sharon E. Duttle / End the Corruption in New Mexico
I have known this woman and her sons for 35 years and this conviction is insane! She has loved and cared for animals’ everyday of her life. She has been terrorized for five years and because she spoke up, she is now facing 25 years in prison for something she is innocent of doing.

  • Cardinal Dolan, it's time to resign
News just broke that Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the nation's top-ranking Catholic bishop, secretly moved millions of dollars into a cemetery trust fund in order to shield the money from lawsuits filed by victims of clergy sexual abuse. In 2007, when he was Archbishop of Milwaukee, Dolan wrote that he wanted to transfer the funds because, "I foresee an improved protection of these funds from any legal claim and liability." Then he lied about it publicly, calling allegations "false gossip" and "malarkey." Pope Francis recently said that he wants bishops who are "pastors close to the people ... animated by inner poverty ... able to watch over the flock that will be entrusted to them." Dolan put protecting the church's money ahead of watching over his flock. Let's make sure he sees that this scandal isn't going away, and it's time for him to go.

  • Justice For Jessica
Jessica was a loving, caring mother of three, who was ruthlessly hunted down and murdered by an ex-boyfriend. For weeks an application for an order of protection was ignored by court and police officials. Several phone calls the day Jessica died were inadequately responded to by local officials. Her death was tragic and unnecessary.

  • Tell Judge Shore: Don't silence free speech!
Jeff Olson is being prosecuted for scrawling anti-Bank of America messages on San Diego sidewalks in water-soluble chalk. He is facing a 13-year jail sentence, and the judge has barred his attorney from mentioning freedom of speech during trial. The First Amendment protects freedom of speech -- especially against huge banks and corporate interests like Bank of America. Judge Howard Shore has erred by disallowing this as a defense, and MUST immediately reverse his decision.

  • Bring Owen Denson Home
Owen Denson needs to be able to come home on Intensive supervision his young son needs him. For the past 4 years Owen has been trying to navigate the system which has punished him for being honest. Now Owen has less than a year left of his sentence. Owen has a job, family and friends waiting. Most importantly his pre-teen son needs him now! Owen has a good support system in place, but the powers that be are still dragging their feet. He is not asking for absolution just to be able to come home on ISP (which for those of you that don't know is an ankle monitor). I want to see how many people we can get to sign before Aug. 17, 2013 and I will present the results to the internal probation officer at the START program where he is currently being held.

  • Don't Throw Edward Snowden Into Darkness
Edward Snowden risked everything to expose the secret NSA spying program of our calls and emails. Now he’s been formally charged with violating the Espionage Act—the same law used to charge Bradley Manning, who provided information to WikiLeaks. For his trouble, Manning was held in solitary confinement for 23 hours per day and forced to sleep naked and sheetless, in conditions even a military judge called “excessive.” By bringing to light information that the powers-that-be would rather keep secret, whistleblowers like Snowden play a fundamental role in our democracy. We can’t just let them be thrown into darkness. As the Department of Justice moves in on Snowden, we need to raise our voices to ensure that Snowden is treated fairly and legally. Sign the statement urging President Obama to guarantee due process for Snowden and to crack down on unconstitutional spying programs—not whistleblowers.

  • Expanding Corrections' Capacities for Medium and Max Security Beds
There was a day in the not recent past where most state and county governments coordinated the planning for (including establishing the need for) building new cells for additional prisoners with the Criminal Justice Coordinating Committee in the state or that county that the new space would serve. These CJCC's were sponsored by federal government who also supplied along with the Council of State Governors the methodologies and list of consultants who were approved to provide technical assistance. Members of the various CJS (Corrections, Courts, Probation and Parole, and Police got together along with these Councils to produce Projections Reports for Incarcerated Populations on a yearly basis whether or not any plan for expansion was being. Reports were part of Public Information. Now, it seems, a few states have ignored this procedure and governors have felt free to lobby for passage of facility expansion without any reports being issued to inform public opinion. Arizona, a state with the second highest per capita incarceration rate, is one of these states. Whereas, in 2001 it was reported that an average of 5.3% of the prisoners (across all states) were being held in Private facilities, while some states including Louisiana had 50% of their prisoners in Private facilities. Currently Arizona is fifth (at close to 50%) while Louisiana has backed off to 11th. Arizona has not put out a population Projection Report for several years even though the department was staffed with people who were more than competent to do so. Meanwhile, there are well known accusations that the governor has accepted multiple contributions to her campaigns and according to CBS 5 "two of Brewer's top advisers have connections to CCA" All states, especially those with significant contracts with Private Prison Companies, need, to maintain public confidence, to issue Corrections Projection Reports either annually or in association with efforts to obtain more public money for prison expansion.and these reports need to be developed with local criminal justice coordinating councils and use recognized methods for conducting their analyses.
