Citizens of Oklahoma: Protect our animals!During the month of May 2013 a massive tornado came through Moore, Oklahoma, leaving devastating destruction. Homes were destroyed, families were separated, and lives were lost. Not only did this tornado affect humans, it also affected animals. Animals were separated from their homes and taken to shelters. Owners only had thirty days to claim their pets until the shelters put the animals up for adoption. Natural disasters happen far too often in Oklahoma. Areas that are at a high risk for natural disasters must participate in a network of animal shelters throughout the state to protect our animals. We need to build no-kill shelters in Moore, El Reno, Piedmont, Weatherford, and Newcastle because these are often devastated by natural disasters and do not possess sufficient animal shelters to house animals that would be displaced during a tornado. Do not let a natural disaster take these animals away because the cities were not prepared. Imagine your own cat or dog being adopted out to another family without your consent because you were not able to find what shelter your pet was located in (Tuttle, 2013). This is what happened not only to pet owners that fell victim to the tornadoes and lost their pets in the confusion, but also, lost or unwanted animals are euthanized every day. If Oklahoma had more shelters like PAWS, Save Our Strays, and Second Chance, then 100,000 dogs and cats could be saved each year (“Oklahoma Dogs,” 2013). By signing this petition you will help us build more sanctuaries for pets, starting with Moore, Oklahoma. With your signatures we will send this to the Moore Assistant City Manager Stan Drake in order to save the lives of hundreds of innocent animals. *Petition updated on 3/26/14 due to new information.332 of 400 SignaturesCreated by Alissa Lindsey

Beaverton City Council: Remove Ban on Medical Marijuana FacilitesOregon passed HB3460 enabling licensing of Medical Marijuana Facilities in October. HB3460 allows the Oregon Health Authority to license Marijuana facilities March 3rd 2014. After the state legislature passed sb1531 cities have taken it upon themselves to see this as a threat and placed bans on a prescribed medication being dispensed to patients through these facilities. After the passing of SB1531 the city extended it ban until Dec 31st 2014. Sick people are waiting for their medication. We encourage the city to adopt its time place and manner rules asap so these patients can access their medication locally.173 of 200 SignaturesCreated by Chris Matthews

Appoint Lorenzo Richardson to the newly vacated seat on the Jersey City Board Of EducationMr. Richardson, a lifelong Jersey City resident and accountant by profession, ran for a seat in the November 5, 2013 Board of Education election and received 4,511 votes -- just 191 votes short of capturing the third seat. As the fourth top vote-getter and, as set by precedent of the Jersey City Board of Education, Lorenzo Richardson is next in line for the seat being vacated and should be appointed to the board. We believe the appointment of Mr. Richardson reflects the will of the public and a that of the 4,511 parents, teachers and residents who voted for him just four months ago in the Jersey City School Board of Education election. We ask that the current board members act in fairness and respect the will of the people of Jersey City and the lawful, democratic mechanism of the State of New Jersey and vote to appoint him to the Jersey City Board of Education.215 of 300 SignaturesCreated by Monique K. .@nytimes: Fix Your False Reporting on VenezuelaUPDATE: The NYT published a correction, which is why we have flagged this campaign as a victory. FAIR wrote up the story here: http://www.fair.org/blog/2014/02/27/nyt-corrects-venezuela-tv-falsehood/ ======= In the lead paragraph of an article on protests in Venezuela, the New York Times falsely reported: "The only television station that regularly broadcast voices critical of the government was sold last year, and the new owners have softened its news coverage." Evidence demonstrating that voices critical of the government are regularly broadcast in Venezuelan media is a matter of public record. The New York Times should run a correction of its false report. Urge New York Times editors to run a correction by signing our petition. On February 24, CEPR Co-director Mark Weisbrot noted [2] that data on television coverage during last year's presidential campaign published by the Carter Center [3] indicated that the two candidates were fairly evenly represented. Weisbrot also noted that there are plenty of examples in the recent coverage of Venevisión, the biggest broadcast television station, where “voices critical of the government” have been “regularly broadcast.” In particular, there was an interview on Venevisión news with Tomás Guanipa, leader of the opposition Primero Justicia (Justice First) party and a representative in the National Assembly, who defended the protests. [4] Weisbrot also noted that Globovisión, the station that the Times report complained had “softened its news coverage,” recently broadcast a long interview with opposition leader María Corina Machado in which she argued that the opposition has the right to overthrow the democratically elected government. [5] Given the current situation in Venezuela, falsely claiming that mass media are closed to critics of the government is a dangerous mistake, similar to reporting that "we know that Iran is building a nuclear weapon." The false claim about Venezuela emboldens the faction of the opposition—and its supporters abroad—that is advocating the use of violence to oppose the government. Urge the New York Times to fulfill its responsibility to publish a correction to its false report. References: 1. .@CaracasChron: Retract False Venezuela "Pogrom" ClaimFrancisco Toro is the author of a viral piece at the blog he co-founded--Caracas Chronicles--titled, "The Game Changed in Venezuela Last Night – and the International Media Is Asleep At the Switch." In it, he outlined a purported "tropical pogrom" and a paramilitary shooting spree that took place throughout the night of February 19. His post accused the Times and other news outlets of complicity in an "international blackout" regarding the supposed "pogrom." However, as any examination of protest-related homicides over the past two weeks shows, there were no deaths recorded on the day or night of the 19th. When confronted on Twitter with the lack of any evidence of his "pogrom," Toro admitted to making an "overstatement in the heat of the moment." Nevertheless, Caracas Chronicles has yet to issue any updates, clarifications or corrections to its now disproved coverage. "The Game Changed in Venezuela Last Night" has received over 370,000 Facebook likes and shares, and 10,000 tweets. Given their influence, Toro and his colleagues at Caracas Chronicles should show greater regard for journalistic standards.111 of 200 SignaturesCreated by Robert Naiman

Flush Rush from Military BasesRush Limbaugh's sexist and misogynistic radio program has no place on military bases, which are struggling with their own culture that condones sexual harassment and assault. Please remove his program from the taxpayer-funded Armed Forces Network. Rush Limbaugh is finally getting his comeuppance for spewing misogynistic rhetoric. Over 3,000 advertisers have pulled their sponsorship, and many radio stations have stopped airing his show. But the Armed Forces Network (AFN), a taxpayer-funded station that broadcasts on U.S. military bases around the world, continues to air his program. The Pentagon faces a serious problem of sexual harassment and abuse, as more women on military bases report horrific cases of sexual assaults by other servicemembers. President Obama has said we must “step up our game exponentially” to prevent such assaults from happening and punish attackers. This must include changing the culture that condones such behavior. Rush Limbaugh’s program fuels a culture that condones—if not encourages—misogynistic behavior on military bases. Please sign our petition to the Senate and House Armed Services Committees asking that they pull Rush Limbaugh’s program from the Armed Forces Network.22,427 of 25,000 SignaturesCreated by Carol Wallin
