• TAKE ACTION: Stop Old-Growth Clear-Cutting in the Tongass National Forest
Last year the U.S. Forest Service approved the Big Thorne timber sale in the Tongass National Forest—the largest, most destructive old-growth clear-cutting project in more than 20 years. Earthjustice is in court today fighting to stop Big Thorne, but if we don’t act soon the Forest Service could approve a forest plan for the Tongass that would allow more large-scale old-growth timber sales just like it for another decade or more, instead of the quick end to old-growth logging in the Tongass promised by the administration in 2010. We can save the Tongass rainforest—but we need your urgent help now to tell agency officials they should quickly bring an end to destructive and controversial large-scale old-growth logging. The Tongass is one of the few remaining old-growth temperate rainforests in the world, and America’s largest national forest. Towering stands of 700-year-old trees provide vital habitat for countless species, including the Alexander Archipelago wolf. An ancient, carbon-rich forest, the Tongass helps to moderate global climate change. Delegates to the Paris climate talks agreed that protecting the Earth’s forests is one of the most important means of curbing the damaging effects of climate change. Protecting Tongass old-growth is an essential step the United States must take to meet the climate imperative coming out of the Paris talks. A stronghold for all five species of Pacific salmon, the Tongass supports a thriving fishing industry as well as a booming tourism industry, as people from across the country visit to enjoy its world-class recreation, hunting and sport and commercial fishing opportunities. The communities of southeast Alaska depend on the bounty of the Tongass and its lands and waters for subsistence practices, recreation and livelihoods. Take action now to protect the Tongass National Forest and reject old-growth logging.

  • MSNBC Suspend Chris Matthews or Give Bernie Equal Time
Bernie Sanders is the most progressive candidate this country has seen since George McGovern. Though running as a Democrat, he is taking on the establishment of both parties as being complicit in the takeover of the US economy and government by billionaires and corporations. He is even taking on the mainstream media and their corporate owners for their role in aiding and abetting this. If the president of MSNBC wants his network to have any credibility as a practitioner of unbiased, objective journalism, he should be very concerned about a show host who has essentially become a mouthpiece for one of the candidates. Chris Matthews has clearly jumped the shark in his blind adoration for, loyalty to and incessant promotion of one of the candidates for the Democratic nomination. Here is just the latest example of his shilling for Hillary Clinton. In this interview, he enables her fantasy narrative that her 2/10ths of one percent lead over Bernie Sanders in Iowa, a statistical tie, constitutes a win. And he can barely hide his contempt for Bernie Sanders when he spits out invective that he is not a Democrat, even though he is clearly running as a Democrat, in order to discredit Senator Sanders with the viewers. http://www.msnbc.com/hardball/watch/clinton-on-her-chances-in-new-hampshire-614386755972 Here is a magazine columnist's take on it. http://www.esquire.com/news-politics/politics/news/a41754/chris-matthews-hillary-clinton-interview/ Chris’ wife may be egging on his disgraceful behavior towards Bernie Sanders. His wife, Kathleen, is running for Congress just outside Washington, D.C. She has very publicly endorsed Hillary Clinton, has worked closely with the Clinton Foundation, is using footage in her campaign of her interviewing Hillary when she was a news reporter, is getting big bucks from Hillary donors, and her campaign is paying money to firms associated with Hillary. There is a clear conflict of interest between Kathleen’s new political career and Chris Matthews’ journalistic obligations to the public. Several women, including Sen. Sherrod Brown’s Pulitzer Prize-winning wife Connie Schultz and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s famous wife Maria Shriver, have taken leaves from their journalism jobs while their spouses ran for office. There is no reason a man should not have to do likewise. Please sign this petition to suspend Chris Matthews for the duration of the 2016 Presidential campaign. Either that, or he needs to give Bernie Sanders equal time on his show or charge Hillary Clinton for political advertising.

  • Hillary Clinton, agree to a NYC debate!
I am personally offended as a native New Yorker that Hillary Clinton refuses to debate here, where she served us for 7 years as senator. Hillary Clinton does not make the rules; we live in a democracy. Bernie Sanders has agreed to the debates she requested, she must agree to debate Bernie Sanders in N.Y.

  • KY: STOP SB 102- ATV's In Parks!
While I understand Senator Jones' desire to promote the tourism, I spent nearly 30 years of my professional life protecting the natural environment in eastern Kentucky including the unique ecosystems found at Bad Branch Falls Nature Preserve, the Hensley-Pine Mountain Wildlife Management Area, and Pine Mountain. This proposal is short-sighted, politically expedient, and demonstrates a total lack of concern for the unique natural resources of the Commonwealth. PLEASE CONTACT your representatives in the General Assembly to stop SN 102. • Keep Guns off Kenyon College Campus
We want Kenyon to clearly remain gun-free. We live in an area where many private citizens own guns, and we would like there to be no ambiguity after the passage of this law as to whether those guns are allowed on campus.

  • Cease the Georgia Day Parade
As the parent of a 3rd grader who has been invited to participate in the Georgia Day Parade, I find it offensive and demeaning to myself and my child. To re-enact history, children were not allowed to associate freely. Therefore this parade and the associated celebrations need to be discontinued immediately. Tax payers funds are being used to facilitate the recognition of a period of time when slavery and the abuse of black persons was not only accepted and legal but also encouraged. As there is no parade to commemorate the Holocaust, there should be none to draw attention to a grievous period of time in Georgia's history. As history denotes, blacks were not afforded the same privileges as whites. There were no blacks celebrating anything with whites back then, and if we are going to re-enact history then it should be done correctly. I would instead suggest that students be given the opportunity to dress up as the career professionals they aspire to be and embrace a positive forecast for their futures.

  • Allow Same-Sex Couples to Prom
Edit: On December 6, 2017 an announcement during an Inclusion and Diversity assembly that the school "reimagined" prom so that any student regardless of sexual orientation, religion, culture, etc. may attend prom with whomever they want. Thank you to the 2,765 people who backed this online and the many many more in the community. -Matt Barrett Dear all, It has come to the attention of the student body that same-sex couples are not being allowed to attend prom. The Saint John's mission statement speaks of "Respect and appreciation for individual differences," but not allowing every student to express themselves to their full extent contradicts this mission. In 2003, Massachusetts removed the ban on gay marriage. It is now 2016; gay marriage is legal nationally. Isn't it about time that we, the Saint John's Pioneers, took a step forward and set an example for our community and embraced Jesus' message to love one another? This is a violation of the civil rights of members of our community. Every student should be able to spend prom with someone that is important to them. This kind of discrimination needs to be stopped. Please sign and share if you support this petition!

  • Don't sponsor a Trump-led presidential convention
Donald Trump has repeatedly belittled Latinos, Muslims, Black people, women and people with disabilities with his hate speech, misogyny, Islamophobia, and racism. This has greatly inflamed a national atmosphere already hostile to these groups and is inspiring a dramatic rise in harassment and violent attacks against these groups. Now companies like Google, AT&T, Coca Cola, Cisco, Xerox, and Adobe Systems are planning to bankroll the Donald Trump-led Republican National Convention. But reports are showing that many of these companies are growing increasingly concerned about attaching their brand to anything involving Trump and his divisive rhetoric. With a nonviolent public push from us, we can convince these companies to dump their sponsorships. And if these companies cancel their RNC sponsorships it could put enough financial pressure on the Republican Party and the RNC to bar Trump from the convention!

  • Tell Governor Christie: Stop allowing New Jersey's children to be poisoned by lead.
Last year, elevated levels of highly toxic lead were found in more than 3100 young children in New Jersey, yet every year of his administration Governor Christie has raided New Jersey's Lead Hazard Control Assistance Fund in order to balance the budget; and this has had devastating consequences. According to newly released data, 11 New Jersey municipalities, including Newark, Jersey City and Trenton, were found to have a higher percentage of children affected by lead poisoning than Flint, MI, where lead in the drinking water has become a national story. There is no safe level of lead in children. In New Jersey, exposure to lead comes primarily from paint in old homes. And without funding for lead poisoning prevention and abatement, thousands more of New Jersey's children, especially in low-income and minority communities, will continue to suffer permanent damage. Governor Christie will announce his 2017 spending plan on February 16, and we need to ensure that lead poisoning prevention is included in his budget. Despite being entirely preventable, lead poisoning has devastating consequences for the children and communities affected. New Jersey can and will do better than this.
