Stand with Mahfar Tenants Coalition: Demand Safe, Lead-Free HomesNYC is not effectively protecting tenants in buildings undergoing renovation! Earlier this year, residents of 102 Norfolk St. were subjected to lead levels roughly 3,000 times the EPA-mandated limit. Now reports from the NYC Department of Health have verified that excessive lead levels exist at 210 Rivington, a second Samy Mahfar-owned building. All tenants, especially children, are put at risk in these buildings contaminated with toxic lead. Although this is occurring in buildings owned by this landlord, we believe that it's happening in thousands of occupied buildings undergoing grossly mismanaged construction throughout New York City. Unsafe and negligent construction practices and lack of agency transparency must stop now. Safe and healthy housing is a human right!!!62 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Cooper Square Committee

Support clean energy in Minnesota! When our state representatives meet again in January, they'll have a chance to expand the amount of clean energy that powers our homes and businesses. That would mean cleaner air and water, more good jobs, significant capital invested in Minnesota, and less of the carbon pollution that is causing climate impacts like flooding, extreme weather and shrinking forests. Producing more clean, homegrown energy right here in Minnesota would also reduce the $13 billion we spend every year to import fossil fuels like coal and oil into our state. While about 15% of Minnesota’s electricity is currently generated from renewable sources like solar and wind, a new report shows that Minnesota utilities have the capacity to more than double it, getting to at least 40% clean power by 2030. (1) That’s why scores of businesses and organizations are calling on Minnesota legislators to increase the Renewable Energy Standard, the percentage of power utilities are required to generate from clean sources, to at least 40% in the next fifteen years. But fossil fuel interests are determined to stop Minnesota’s move toward more clean energy. They’d keep us reliant on imported fuels that import pollution and export our dollars. We need to let our legislators that we expect them to resist pressure from special interests and support stronger clean energy standards for the health of our kids, communities, economy and climate. Please join me in telling state legislators to support clean energy for Minnesota by strengthening the Renewable Energy Standard to 40% or higher by 2030. Thank you for taking action! Sincerely, Dan Rustowicz Father, Founder of RedWind Consulting, and Climate Parents member. eBay: Stop funding anti-clean energy group ALEC!Several leading Silicon Valley companies that support action on climate change recently ended memberships in the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). These companies could no longer justify supporting a climate change-denying organization that is working aggressively across the country to block and repeal renewable energy and climate legislation. ALEC is even leading a charge to penalize homeowners who install their own solar panels, labeling them “freeriders.” Google, Facebook, Yahoo! and Yelp ditched ALEC in the last two months. Google Chairman Erik Schmidt told NPR that ALEC is “literally lying” about the reality of climate change before dropping its membership. But one company is hanging on: eBay. This despite the fact that eBay has taken strides to be an energy efficient company, and is working with other businesses to “pass meaningful energy and climate legislation.” eBay CEO John Donahoe recently said “we’re not with (ALEC)" on climate change. It’s clear that ALEC shouldn’t be supported by companies like eBay that espouse values that ALEC is working to destroy. Please join me in telling ebay to dump ALEC now! Thank you for taking action for our climate and kids.624 of 800 SignaturesCreated by John Friedrich, Climate Parents

Video Games End Prison Violence in Washington State PrisonsSeveral inmates at the Washington State Penitentiary and their families are calling on members of the community to help them end prison violence through the use of video games. THIS CAN BE DONE AT NO COST TO THE PUBLIC by allowing inmates to purchase their own video game console from an approved vendor. Several other states have already taken advantage of this highly cost-effective and such management tool. Studies done in these states have shown a significant drop in prison violence when even the most violent offenders were given the opportunity to purchase their own video game system. Microsoft (creator of Xbox) has recognized the use of video game consoles in prisons across the U.S. and has developed a console which conforms with the prisons security concerns. This console is called the Xbox ghost system which has eliminated the use of wifi capability to prevent prisoners use of the internet to contact individuals outside the prison walls and has designed the system to be clear (see through) to prevent the prisoners use of the console to hide contraband. Several proposals have been submitted to the Washington Department of Corrections (DOC) regarding a video game program for prisoners. However, DOC's apparent hesitation in the implementation of this evidence based program stems from the concern over potential public outcry. Under Washington State law "all citizens, the public and inmates alike, have a personal and fiscal obligation in the corrections system. All communities must share in the responsibility of the corrections system." (See RCW 72.09.010 (5) (e)). Please us join us in our endeavor to implement this evidence based program by liking this page to show your community support in ending prison violence through the use of video games. In addition, view our links which support this evidence based program and go our link to at change.org to sign our petition. Washington State law defines "evidence-based" as "a program or practice that has had multiple-site random controlled trials across heterogeneous populations demonstrating that the program or practice is effective in reducing recidivism for the population." ( RCW 72.09.015(10)). Even if you are not from Washington State still show your support in this movement to end prison violence worldwide. THANK YOU FOR YOUR COMMUNITY SUPPORT!
