Assemblymember Frazier: Our Democracy Depends on Your VoteCalifornia can turn the tide on unlimited secret money in elections by passing the California DISCLOSE Act, a measure that will reveal the shadowy interests that try to buy elections with deceptive ads. The California DISCLOSE Act (SB 52) would bring true transparency, requiring ballot measure ads to clearly show their actual three top funders on the ads themselves – so Californians know who’s trying to buy their vote. The bill is close to passing, but now some of the biggest interests in Sacramento are trying to kill it. Assemblymember Brown will be a key vote. Tell The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to Protect the Threatened Monarch ButterflyMonarch butterflies are one of the most beautiful and iconic insects in the world, and they are in serious trouble. The monarch butterfly population in North America has been shrinking at an alarming rate. Why? A major culprit is the use of herbicides like Monsanto’s Roundup on genetically engineered (GE) crops, which is destroying a significant portion of their breeding habitat. That’s why Center for Food Safety and Center for Biological Diversity have just co-filed a groundbreaking legal action—joined by Xerces Society and renowned monarch scientist Prof. Lincoln Brower—to list the monarch butterfly as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). If listed, the U.S. government would be required to take urgent and significant action to protect monarchs from further declines. Sign the petition to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) in support of protecting monarchs under the ESA! We all know that Monsanto’s genetically engineered crops and the pesticides they promote can wreak havoc on our farms, food, and environment. But what many people may not know is that they are also playing a big role in the rapid disappearance of monarchs. Herbicides like Roundup don’t kill monarchs directly, but rather kill their primary food source and habitat. Milkweeds are critical to the monarch’s survival because they are the only plants monarch caterpillars will eat. But thanks to the rampant use of Roundup on Monsanto’s genetically engineered crops, milkweed plants in the heart of the monarch’s range have been demolished. Fewer milkweeds mean fewer Monarchs. So we are faced with a historic choice: Do we want Monsanto or monarchs? It is becoming increasingly clear that we cannot have both. To protect monarchs we must protect and reclaim their critical habitat, and reject Monsanto’s Roundup Ready GE crops, and the unsustainable, pesticide-intensive, industrial agriculture system promoted by them. Though there are some good voluntary programs to restore milkweeds and protect monarchs, there are no mandatory regulatory mechanisms that adequately protect the monarch butterfly. Listing monarchs under the ESA will ensure that these iconic butterflies get the protection they need. Join CFS in urging the FWS to protect monarch butterflies!38,306 of 40,000 SignaturesCreated by Center for Food Safety

US Fish and Wildlife Service: Save Endangered Mexican WolvesAt last count, there were only 83 wild Mexican gray wolves, or lobos, in the U.S. and they need your help. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) recently proposed changes to the rule governing the reintroduction program for the critically endangered Mexican wolf. While provisions to increase the area where new wolves can be released and can roam are important, other proposed changes, such as allowing more killing of these endangered wolves and limiting protections, contradict what scientists say is necessary for the wolves’ recovery. Your signature and personal comments on this petition will be submitted as comments on the proposal and will help influence decision-makers to save these wonderful animals before it's too late.7,455 of 8,000 SignaturesCreated by Roxane George

Warren Buffett: Don't Finance Burger King's Tax-Dodging DealBack in 2012, billionaire investor Warren Buffett decried the fact that he was able to pay a lower tax rate than his secretary. Now he's financing a dodgy deal that would let a huge American corporation shrink its U.S. tax bill -- and require the rest of us to make up the difference. Burger King is trying to merge with Canadian coffee-and-doughnuts chain Tim Hortons. Once the merger is over, Burger King will change its address to Canada to dodge U.S. taxes. You'll still see a Burger King restaurant every time you drive down the highway, and the corporation's business decisions will still be made in its offices in Miami. The corporation is actually going nowhere. It's a move on paper only. What's more, Burger King will continue to pay low wages, and its workers will continue to need Medicaid, food stamps and other benefits and services that our tax dollars pay for. But now, we'll be paying a greater share of those costs, to make up for every dollar that Burger King doesn't pay. Warren Buffett claims to care about having a fair tax system, where those who have less don't end up paying more than those who have more. He's got to put his money where his mouth is. Tell Buffett: Do not finance Burger King's tax-dodging deal. Instead, stand up for a fair tax system, where corporations and the wealthy pay their fair share of taxes.1,836 of 2,000 SignaturesCreated by Americans for Tax Fairness Action Fund

Burger King wants to dodge taxes!Burger King announced its intent to merge with Canadian chain Tim Hortons, creating the world's third largest fast food chain. As part of the deal, Burger King would relocate its operations to Canada -- in order to take advantage of Canada's much lower corporate tax rate. This is yet another example of corporations trying any and everything to avoid paying taxes. This merger also means Burger King will become one of the world's largest poverty-wage employer. American taxpayers already subsidize the fast food industry's low wages by an estimated $7 billion dollars a year. Moving to Canada is just another way for Burger King to privatize profits and socialize costs.39,706 of 40,000 SignaturesCreated by Joe Dinkin
