Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal is holding $16 billion in federal funds hostage, because he hates the Affordable Care Act. As a direct result, over 242,000 Louisiana residents are unable to get Medicaid—and are currently without health insurance. But we can let the people of Louisiana decide—63% of whom support Medicaid expansion. Senate Bill 96 would put Medicaid expansion on the November ballot. Duke Energy continues to violate clean water rules and to pollute our state's groundwater and rivers. The resulting coal ash disaster has been mismanaged, showing fundamental flaws in Duke Energy's fiscal and institutional integrity. The Nathan Cummings Foundation and 20 other major investors have called on Duke Energy's board to conduct a prompt internal investigation of the coal ash disaster. The second recent breakthrough was a call to action from both CalPERS, (the California state pension fund), and the New York City Retirement Systems to dismiss the members of Duke Energy’s Regulatory Policy and Oversight Committee. The four board members of this committee have responsibility for environmental compliance, yet they do not have expertise in that field. Moreover, they have failed to live up to their public responsibilities.

That record has hounded me throughout the years, and there are millions more like me, whose lifetime potential was robbed by these arcane laws. And that can only hurt society as a whole. We can't get that back, but we can make certain the leaders of the future are not saddled with the same obstacles by demanding our lawmakers take responsibility as one of their first acts of 2015, when the 114th Congress is seated.
