HSBC was one of the worst subprime lenders during the heyday of subprime lending. As a real estate agent during that time (I quit the business and am teaching English abroad now), I saw too many times how they raped the poor and elderly with their high fees, prepayment penalties and exorbitant interest rates. One story, but I have hundreds. One man who lived in one of the poorest neighborhoods in New Castle, DE, Rosegate, had gotten refinanced with HSBC. He had a huge prepayment penalty that I couldn't get him out of; his interest rate was 9.25% when interest rates were about 6%. In fact, when I sold him a home, he qualified at Wilmington Trust for 6%, the going rate at the time, just about a year after he had gotten the refinance with HSBC! Robbery, and nothing less. Of course, he was a minority, whom HSBC preys on. They want me to keep this short, but I have more stories. HSBC wasn't the only one, but they were definitely one of the worst. Last Tuesday our President, Barack Obama, won a decisive victory after running on a platform of letting the tax cuts for earners making more than $250,000 a year expire. Now as our country faces a fiscal cliff, our Republican controlled Congress would like to pretend that our voices were actually asking for the opposite. It's important that we hold the President and especially congress accountable to the will of the majority. If we'd wanted these tax cuts to be extended Mitt Romney would be President-elect today. If Boehner refuses to compromise or the President in a desire to seem like a 'bipartisan" caves to their re-invention of recent events, they need to know which way the wind is actually blowing. One cannot complain about deficits and then continue ill-conceived tax cuts to those who need it the least. If they send a bill without that particular piece the President should veto it. If we go off the "fiscal cliff" he should stump in each of these Republicans counties in 2014. There must be consequences for this obstructionism, and not just for regular people.

This petition is about students who need teachers to help them with their learning disabilities. I have a learning disability and I had to share books in school because we couldn't have our own.

Pflugerville High School is denying one of our beloved Pagan community members her right to take her son out of school for a religious holy day. Samhain is a pagan holiday which is equivalent to New Year's. Texas Board of Education has stated under code 25.087 that a school shall give an excused absence for a religious holy day, including the day of as well as a day prior and after for travel. This goes for any religion whether it be Christian, Jewish, Buddhism or Paganism and all that fall in between. They are denying a member of our community their rights. We need to stand together and show them that we are here, not going anywhere and we deserve the same Religious consideration as Christians do. Employers should not be permitted to view a potential candidate's credit profile unless directly handling large sums of money in excess of $5,000 or more on an UNSUPERVISED basis.

As a resident, voter and homeowner in the State of New York, the fact that JP Morgan Chase received excess funds as a result of the LIBOR manipulations concerns me. JP Morgan Chase operates in New York under the laws my representatives enacted and must account for any charges it obtained from customers as a result of the artificial inflation of mortgage rates.

As the nation observes Veteran’s Day, janitors who ensure that veterans have safe and sanitary rooms at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center are being denied two weeks’ pay. I take my job as a janitor at Walter Reed very seriously and I feel responsible for keeping it clean and safe for all the veterans who are getting care there. But Escab Enterprises, a federal cleaning contractor that has received over $40 million in taxpayer money since 2008, hasn’t paid me and my fellow employees our last paycheck--for two weeks of work-- and they won’t even say when we will get paid. In fact, they haven’t paid nearly 300 janitors that work at Walter Reed, the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) and the Internal Revenue Service. We earn just $13.97 per hour at Walter Reed and without two weeks of pay we are already struggling to support our families. We don’t know when—or if—they intend to pay us what we’re owed. The government is spending millions in tax dollars on this company that hasn’t paid the workers who are helping our nation’s veterans recuperate in a safe and clean environment and cleaning other important government buildings. We are committed to our jobs and continue to work to best protect the health and safety of the patients and workers in the buildings we clean but we need to be paid immediately so we can support our families. We have been told a responsible contractor is taking over at the Walter Reed Medical Center. The Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) and the Internal Revenue Service should do the same; Escab Enterprises is a bad actor and shouldn’t be allowed to work for the government.

Marijuana is far less harmless than alcohol, which is perfectly legal and is sold in all 50 states. In fact, in NH, where I live, our state sells it to profit the government. One cannot die just from using marijuana. It is about time the government realized marijuana is not something to get in a big huff about. Some states are wising up and legalizing marijuana, and the federal government needs to respect their rights as states and let them legislate this as they please.

With the dreaded "fiscal cliff" looming, we need to push members of Congress to accept tax increases as part of a balanced approach to resolving the deficit. Those in Congress who signed Grover Nordquist's Pledge not to raise taxes must be pressured to band together and Dump the Pledge. America's fiscal future is on the line!
