Trump's "Deal of the Century" is a direct attack on the rights of the Palestinian people, one that would not be possible without Christians United for Israel (CUFI), the largest Israel lobby in the US. CUFI has spent over a decade laying the groundwork for these policies. With unyielding support for U.S. military funding to Israel, anti-BDS legislation, and settlement expansion, CUFI has been moving towards this moment since its inception. It is no surprise that CUFI's founder, John Hagee, a frequent guest to the White House over the past 4 years, attended Trump's announcement. With over 8 million members and consistent presence on Capital Hill, CUFI is intimately involved in strengthening conservative backing for Israel. Iowa is not demographically representative of the party or of the country as a whole. Yet election after election, Iowa voters hold outsize sway simply because they vote first. Presidential candidates spend months campaigning in Iowa instead of hearing from voters in other parts of the country.

Composting organic waste is one more way the University of Louisville (UofL) can divert waste from the landfill. Since 2013, UofL has been working to reduce its waste, and expanding composting will be the next step in this process. On top of this, composting will reduce carbon emissions created by our waste. When organic materials are thrown into the landfill, they are forced to decompose without oxygen, which produces methane, a greenhouse gas much stronger than carbon dioxide. UofL has stated that it is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and composting is one solution.

This experience is nearly universal: a package arrives at the front door and a buyer goes retrieve it. Opening the cardboard box, taking out the foam boards, bubble wrap, and plastic sheets, ripping open the shrink-wrap are all steps one must take to open an average package to reveal the product. By the same caliber, drinks such as milk tea are usually placed inside large plastic bags that serve no purpose other than being a temporary container. This means that purchasing a simple product weighing in at only a few grams, produces about a kilogram of plastic and foam that become potential pollutants for the environment. The producer wastes materials and money on extra packaging, and on top of all that, the process of disposing of such excessive packaging is certainly not an enjoyable process, and wastes time and effort on the consumer’s side as well. Join us in the effort to reduce plastic waste in the environment, help improve the productivity of firms, and reduce consumer inconvenience. After all, how can we clean the oceans if more plastic flows in afterwards? Currently, Publix Grocery is the only pharmacy in the nation that allows customers to bring back their consumer pharmacy bottles for recycling. With much success, Publix customers returned more than 8.2 million Publix Pharmacy vials for recycling in 2018 alone. CVS Pharmacy is the largest retail pharmacy in the nation and is estimated to serve over five million customers daily. Join me in urging CVS Pharmacy to allow customers to return pharmacy prescription bottles for recycling, and prevent unnecessary waste from entering our landfills.

President Trump is proposing changes to disability insurance (SSDI and SSI) that would impact an estimated 2.6 million people with disabilities, many of whom are families with children. Families like Kara’s in North Carolina: “My son is on the autism spectrum, he has other health issues that limit what he is able to eat, and he has horrible anxiety. He’s never been able to attend a regular school—we had to pull him out at the age of 7 because he would get so anxious and have hallucinations. On top of that, I have serious health issues. I have had 7 back surgeries and I’m on 19 different prescriptions. I’m a fall risk. I’m in bed a lot. I have blurry vision, narcolepsy and Behcet’s Disease (an autoimmune disease). I worked as a therapist but eventually had to close my practice. My husband works from home so he can take care of us but because of that he can’t advance in his career. I started applying for disability and was denied twice. Then I got a lawyer and it took forever for me to get a hearing and eventually get approved for disability insurance. SSDI got us to the point that we weren’t terrified all the time. We can breathe. If we lose it I don’t know what we will do. I’m terrified by President Trump’s proposal quite honestly.” We'll be submitting our official comment on Trump's proposed federal rule change on disability insurance and we want to make sure your signature is included.

Failure to enforce this law is seen as encouraging the breaking of the law, empowering those who wish to silence protest, thus making the city and police department culpable in the event of injury or death resulting from aggressive action against those who peacefully assemble. Tell our city officials to enforce the law. Demand they make our gatherings safe for all citizens to attend. A city where parents can safely bring their children to rallies to witness the exercising of their First Amendment Rights, without fear of exposing them to violence or foul language .

I'm a Hoboken parent, my 66-year-old mother lives here, and I know many neighbors who this power plant would put at most risk; children, older adults, and people with cardiovascular, lung or respiratory problems. The NJ Transit Fossil Fuel Power Plant is a $546 million, 140-megawatt natural gas-fired project that would mostly be paid by a Superstorm Sandy Resilience grant. This is a huge contradiction. 1) The proposed site is an active flood plain, and the plant would become the 13th largest emitter of greenhouse gases in New Jersey, dumping 577,000 tons of Carbon Dioxide equivalent greenhouse gases annually. 2) Ironically, NJ Transit describes this plant as a resiliency project, but the greenhouse gas emissions from the plant would add to the chances of more climate emergencies like Superstorm Sandy. 3) There are cleaner solutions to the resiliency problems that NJ Transit wants to solve with this plant. Those solutions can deliver the same amount of power with much less risk to Hoboken residents – but NJ Transit has not explored them. Renewable technology alternatives – quickly becoming more cost-effective -- include zero-emission technologies like a solar-powered microgrid along with wind and tidal forces combined with battery storage. WHAT’S SO BAD ABOUT GAS-FIRED POWER PLANTS? - Gas infrastructure facilities can annually emit into the air hundreds of tons of pollutants including particulate matter, toxic chemicals such as sulfur dioxide, mercury, and criteria pollutants (such as nitrogen oxides which cause smog, acid rain and contribute to ozone production), some of which are known carcinogens such as benzene and formaldehyde which are known to increase the severity of asthma and other respiratory diseases. - Particulate matter, once inhaled, can affect the heart and lungs and cause serious health effects including lung cancer. - Long-term exposure to ozone is linked to aggravation of asthma, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis, and it is likely to be one of many causes of asthma development. - Long-term exposures to ozone may also be linked to permanent lung damage, such as abnormal lung development in children. Please sign the petition to prevent NJ Transit from building a polluting gas-fired power plant within 4 miles of Hoboken.

The CDC reported in 2014 that people of color are more likely than whites to accidentally drown. In fact African Americans are likely to drown at a rate of 10X more frequently than whites. This is a shocking statistic and the reason for this I believe is lack of access to municipal pools. The 911 students at Encina are 81% minority and 93% are economically disadvantaged. They must endure the hot summers of Sacramento and there are few public pools in the vicinity. I presented this information to the Encina School Site Council in November, 2016. I thought that they would see how important a school site pool would be. I was so happy when Measure P passed. I assumed the district would provide a necessary provision. Then I saw that a track and field turf with stadium bleachers had been prioritized and was surprised that this superseded the need for a pool. The average temperature in Sacramento in July is 94 degrees and the nearby rivers are enticing. The American and Sacramento Rivers are dangerous, but attractive to swim in on hot days. On June 24 2018, an Encina Student, Mohammed Mounir Kamal, aged 17, accidentally drowned in the Sacramento River when he was on a picnic with his family. This sad tragedy should be our wake up call. Studies have shown the risk of drowning can be ameliorated by providing safe swimming sites, according to the author of “Contested Waters-A Social History of Swimming Pools in America” Prof. Jeff Wiltse, 2007. Moreover, swimming is a California State Teaching Standard. Having a pool on a school site underscores the importance of knowing this skill. A pool on campus supports four sports; Competitive Swimming, Diving, Synchronized Swimming and Water Polo. The Mission Oaks Park and Recreation District which serves the area has no pool either. Dan Barton, the Director has said he is open to operating the Encina pool over the summer. There are many models for this. For example in West Sacramento, The Parks and Recreation District has a contract with the Washington Unified School District to operate the pool during summertime at River City High School. It is called a Mixed Use pool. The approximate cost for a pool is $7 million. Encina had a winning swim team in 1991 and the SJUSD filled in the pool with dirt and asked the students to practice at Sac State. This proved to be too much of an inconvenience and the team disbanded soon after. Seven other SJUSD high school sites have pools so please consider giving these needy students a pool. A pool on campus supports four sports: Competitive Swimming, Synchronized Swimming, Water Polo and Diving. Swimming is unlike any other sport; it is a life saving skill.
