What's wrong with KansasKansas faces dangers from rising CO2 Say KU Scientists “We can expect more heat, more intense storms and more droughts,” say KU scientists in climate change report Higher temperatures, more intense storms and increased drought will plague Kansas this century because of rising carbon dioxide emissions, according to a study by Kansas University scientists that was released Tuesday. The study details numerous dangers posed by climate change and should serve as a warning and prompt new policies that reduce CO2 emissions, the scientists said. The study by Feddema and KU’s Nathaniel Brunsell, also a geography professor, was done for the Salina-based Land Institute’s Climate and Energy Project. By 2100, if greenhouse gas emissions continue to increase as projected, temperatures in Kansas will rise an average of 2 degrees to 4 degrees, the study said. Southwest Kansas could see an increase of 8 degrees. By 2060, winter temperatures will stay mostly above freezing. That means more insects, diseases, and the need for farmers to increase the use of costly pesticides, the scientists concluded. Higher summertime temperatures will also hurt crops and livestock and increase the need for irrigation. Climate change will also cause more extreme weather patterns, including intense rain and flooding, but because of higher temperatures, soil moisture will decrease, and that means more intense drought. “What hurts Kansas also hurts the nation,” the report said. “Climate change will increase stress on America’s breadbasket, risking our food security.” An earlier study by the National Council of State Legislatures estimated that climate change could cost Kansas $1 billion per year. The report recommends that Kansas embrace renewable energy, focusing on wind, biomass and solar. Not only will this help the environment but it will also play into Kansas’ economic hand, the report said.22 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Les Blevins

The officer who killed Botham Jean must be FIRED and charged with murder.Amber Guyger, a white female officer, killed Botham Shem Jean in his own apartment in Dallas and her story isn't adding up. Apparently, she thought she had entered her own apartment when she killed him. But so many questions remain unanswered: How do you mistake someone else's apartment for your own? Was she drunk or on drugs? How did she get into the apartment? Did she know Botham personally? And making it even more unbelievable, the officer's story keeps changing. At first, she said that the door to Botham's apartment was locked. Now she's telling investigators that she yelled at Botham to show his hands after she walked into HIS apartment. However, the attorney representing Botham's family has received witness accounts from neighbors saying that they heard "knocking down the hallway followed by a woman's voice that they believe to be officer Guyger saying, 'Let me in. Let me in.'" So many questions remain unanswered and Amber Guyger is only getting more time to re-work her story. We need answers and transparency now. When police kill Black people they almost always get away with it and are protected under the "blue code of silence." And this is no different. Any other person, especially if they were Black, would have been arrested immediately and charged with home invasion and murder. But the Dallas Police Department gave Guyger THREE days to craft her story before she was arrested or even publicly identified. She was released immediately after her arrest on manslaughter charges. She's free. And she's still on Dallas Police Department payroll. Dallas District Attorney, Faith Johnson, is in charge of this case and has the power to make the final decision on the charges that Amber will face for killing Botham. In a press statement, she alluded to the inadequacy of manslaughter charges and said, "The grand jury will decide if the charges should be different. Believe me, we will make sure justice is done in this case." So we need to turn the pressure up on DA Johnson and make sure she keeps her promise by ensuring Amber Guyger is charged with murder and that the Dallas Police Department gets Amber Guyger off the force.3,385 of 4,000 SignaturesCreated by Rashad Robinson

Investigate for-profit tent cities holding immigrant childrenHow can Americans stand by, day by day while young unaccompanied children are living in cages & tents (surrounded by strangers instead of family) by our Federal government who has no plan for re-unification with their parents. These children will never be the same. Close down these horrible kid-prisons and re-unite them NOW!!1,279 of 2,000 SignaturesCreated by Laura Sagen

Emergency Response and Preparedness Money Should Not Be Used to Detain FamiliesDocuments recently obtained by Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR) revealed that the Trump Administration moved $10 million from FEMA, the agency tasked with protecting us from and preparing us for disasters like hurricanes, to Trump and Jeff Sessions’ detention and deportation efforts. The purpose of FEMA is to reduce the loss of life and property in emergency situation. How FEMA spends its money is often a matter of life and death. This is especially true during hurricane season — and especially true right now, as Hurricane Florence bears down on the East Coast. Overall, $169 million has been taken from the Domestic Nuclear Detection Office, the U.S. Coast Guard, the TSA, and others so that ICE has millions of dollars more to carry out an extremist agenda of tearing apart families, detaining children, and instilling fear and trauma on those who seek the American Dream. Using funds from FEMA and other agencies for cruel political pet projects like family detention and deportation is not only inhumane, it’s dangerous. Tell the Trump Administration to stop separating families and give this money back!1,847 of 2,000 SignaturesCreated by Matt Hildreth

Transparency in Indiana Government - Nickel Plate RailroadOn February 28, 2017, Fishers, Noblesville, and Hamilton County announced their surprise decision to convert the Historic Nickel Plate railroad to a trail. This decision came without public input, involvement, or oversight and will be detrimental to the future economic development potential of a corridor that is capable of hosting both rails AND trails. Since that time, more than 11,000 citizens have demanded better government process to explain the project, consider alternatives, and invite the public to participate in a meaningful way. ELECTED OFFICIALS HAVE PRESSED FORWARD WITH NO INDICATION OF LISTENING TO A MAJORITY OF THEIR RESIDENTS. By signing this petition: - I signify my support of the recent legal action by Save the Nickel Plate, Inc. for alleged violations of the Open Door Laws by Fishers, Noblesville, and Hamilton County when making decisions regarding the Nickel Plate railroad. - I believe this legal action will help to protect the public's interest in participating in critical government decisions. - I believe that the public HAS NOT been afforded adequate (if any) opportunity to participate in the planning and decision making process of the Nickel Plate railroad - it appears to have all been decided behind closed doors. - I PERSONALLY COMMIT TO SUPPORT OR CAST MY VOTE FOR CANDIDATES WHO I BELIEVE WILL PROVIDE MORE TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY IN OUR GOVERNMENT.100 of 200 SignaturesCreated by Save the Nickel Plate

End Support for Genocide in PalestineOngoing repression in Palestine conducted by the Israeli Defense Forces, is supported by the US government to the tune of millions of dollars a day. Ten million is the figure I find most often. These soldiers, under orders, have targeted unarmed civilians, killing 172 of them outright but intentionally maiming and crippling thousands of others as a sadistic entirely unwarranted act of brutality. No strong denouncement of this brazen terrorism comes from the halls of Congress or from the Oval Office. Rather...the money continues to flow. We demand that our leaders stop supporting the genocide of the Palestinian people, that they denounce these clear crimes against humanity and that they take action in support of a free Palestine.433 of 500 SignaturesCreated by Brian Carlson

Ban gas powered leaf blowers in Santa Barbara CountyMany people in Santa Barbara County are still experiencing respiratory, skin, and other symptoms related to the recent fires and mudslides. Clouds of dirt and dust that contain dangerous chemicals and contaminants including, mold, fungus, pollen, herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers, volatile compounds, toxic metals, insect eggs, and animal feces are propelled into the air by leaf blowers. These tiny toxic particles get into our lungs and have no way of getting out and can cause health problems such as lung cancer, heart disease, strokes, asthma, and other respiratory illnesses.328 of 400 SignaturesCreated by Lesley Weinstock
