Childhood sexual abuseMillions of Americans are affected by the plight of childhood sexual abuse. As a survivor I want to bring to light this issue,an especially as it pertains to African American men, which more times than not goes unnoticed and is taboo in the African American community (''Black men are everything but they cant be child molesters'').224 of 300 SignaturesCreated by Eric Ramsey

Discrimination against gay rights forced upon the American Red Cross La discriminación contra los...If you care about the rights of every American then you need to sign this petition. There is an unfair, bigoted question in the screening process of the American Red Cross that 100% prevents any gay men from donating blood, even if it is certain they do not have HIV/AIDS.

No More Trayvons. President Obama: We Need To Talk About Race. Now.America is in turmoil since the announcement of the Zimmerman verdict. Demonstrations of outrage have ignited all across the country in response. The verdict sends a message about the lesser value of Black life and the toleration of racial prejudice. We must refute this dangerous message. We cannot deny the role of race and racism in the Trayvon Martin Tragedy. The only reason that the 17-year-old, was considered suspicious in his own neighborhood was because he was Black. It is reflective of the prejudice in our society that the young Black man who was killed on his way home was made out to be the criminal, and the grown man who shot him became the victim. To omit the role of race is to ask for tragedies like this to happen again. We must break the cycle. America must talk about race and the reality of racial inequity. NOW. Your leadership is required to seed that conversation. In response to the Zimmerman verdict, your office released a statement acknowledging the tragedy of Trayvon’s death and the strong passions around the decision, noting: “[W]e are a nation of laws, and a jury has spoken. I now ask every American to respect the call for calm reflection from two parents who lost their young son. And as we do, we should ask ourselves if we're doing all we can to widen the circle of compassion and understanding in our own communities. We should ask ourselves if we're doing all we can to stem the tide of gun violence that claims too many lives across this country on a daily basis. We should ask ourselves, as individuals and as a society, how we can prevent future tragedies like this." You are right that we need to ask “how we can prevent future tragedies like this”. But to do that, we must ask ourselves how we will address racial inequality in our society. We can’t turn a blind eye towards the unfounded racial prejudice and criminalization of Black men that was at the root of this case. Nor can we ignore the myriad other indicators of racial injustice in this country: In Florida, the same State where Zimmerman’s trial took place, Marissa Alexander, a 31-year old Black mother of three was sentenced to twenty years for firing warning shots to defend herself from her abusive husband. She received no protection under the Stand Your Ground law. [1] This year’s public school closings in Chicago disproportionately affect Black students. Although the Black student population in Chicago is only 43%, of the 54 schools that were closed, 88% of the affected student population is Black. [2] In 2012, there were 313 reported extrajudicial killings of Black people by police officers, security guards, and vigilantes. That’s one Black person every 28 hours. [3] Deaths like Trayvon’s and so many more injustices will persist if we do not name the reality of racial inequity. This 17-year-old boy’s tragic death is about more than Gun Control and Stand Your Ground. It’s about racial prejudice in the United States. We need a leader who will name that. A leader who will respect the legacy of the many Americans who struggled and died for civil rights. A leader who will seize upon this critical teaching moment for America. We need you to be our President, not another cautious politician. America must begin a national conversation about race and we need your leadership to do it. President Obama please Call A White House Commission on race and racism in AmericaIn light of the Travesty of the George Zimmerman trial President Obama can convene a White House commission on race and racism in America. It is all too clear that we do not live in a Post Racial Society. Our President can address this issue head on and begin the real process of healing and hope and will not need the permission of congress to do it! He has the power to act now!196 of 200 SignaturesCreated by Rev. John E. Jackson

Gov. Scott: Prove Your Commitment to the Youth with the 'Trayvon's LawWe honor the memory of Trayvon Martin and pay respects to his family. This tragedy serves as a vivid reminder of the pain felt by youth in their communities, in which they are profiled, criminalized and targeted. Unless we take action nothing will change. The Zimmerman verdict showed the world that Florida has no value for the life of its children. We have been engaged in a peaceful sit-in of the Governor Rick Scott's office in the State Capitol since Tuesday, July 16 demanding that he call a special session of the legislature to deal with these issues. After three days of waiting and sleeping on the Capitol floor while the Governor traveled around the country and state, he finally agreed to meet with us on Thursday, July 18th. Unfortunately, when the Governor finally met with a contingent from the group, he failed to rise to the occasion. Rather than using his considerable power to create change, he told us he would call for a statewide day of prayer to end racial profiling. We feel he has to do much more. This is an opportunity for Governor Rick Scott and the Florida legislature to show leadership prove their commitment to the next generation of Floridians.34,781 of 35,000 SignaturesCreated by Dream Defenders

Mayor Bloomberg: Racial profiling must endIn the Bloomberg era, the NYPD has stopped New Yorkers over five million times in its controversial stop-and-frisk program. Nearly 90% of those stopped are Black or Latino/a and the vast majority (nearly 90%) have done nothing wrong. New Yorkers have had enough of discriminatory policing – and our elected leaders in the City Council have gotten the message and taken action. Last month, the City Council passed the Community Safety Act (Intro 1079 and 1080), two new landmark laws that will create independent oversight for the NYPD, and protect New Yorkers from discriminatory police profiling based on race, ethnicity, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, immigration status, disability, and housing status. Mayor Bloomberg vetoed the legislation on July 23rd, but that does not seem to be enough for him. In his unique position as New York’s wealthiest citizen (in addition to being mayor), he and his surrogates have threatened to use his wealth to attack City Council Members who vote to override his veto. While it is legal because of the wrong-headed Citizens United Supreme Court decision, this is a gross distortion of government. If a sitting mayor with effectively unlimited wealth can flood a small City Council race with attack ads and mailers solely for the purpose of fighting a law he disagrees with but the legislature has passed, the “checks and balances” and separation of powers are entirely distorted. We are ready for a new era for the NYPD, to repair police-community relations and to embrace policing strategies that ensure everyone feels safe walking the streets. We cannot allow one wealthy mayor to stand in the way of progress.2,630 of 3,000 SignaturesCreated by Talib Kweli

The Trayvon MandateYears ago in a town in the South Negroes decided to ban together and bring financial impact upon certain business to right certain wrongs. Pressure is one means we have to bring light to a problem. They boycotted restaurants, department stores and busses. We can have an impact on the economy of the state of Florida. Might seem small but lets agree as a community to cease buying any and all Orange juices, Oranges, Grapefruit and citrus. Lets not go to Disney or to Universal Studios. Lets take action that will have impact. Talking on FB and social media has some impact. The loss of dollars may however cause people to pay attention to us as a people. Let us begin today July 14 to rally around Travon and start the dialogue necessary to make significant and lasting change on the American landscape. The jury decided the outcome on George Zimmerman based on Florida Law. The law has been shown to be applied in an unequal manner a few times in the past year. The outcome was magnified in the death of Trayvon Martin. People of every hue have marched across the country in outrage at the verdict.. Sign , send , forward , circulate. The petition is two fold, it calls for a boycott and a change in state laws. We have to stop talking and start acting in a manner that the country as a whole will recognize and understand.
