In light of the Travesty of the George Zimmerman trial President Obama can convene a White House commission on race and racism in America. It is all too clear that we do not live in a Post Racial Society. Our President can address this issue head on and begin the real process of healing and hope and will not need the permission of congress to do it! He has the power to act now!

We honor the memory of Trayvon Martin and pay respects to his family. This tragedy serves as a vivid reminder of the pain felt by youth in their communities, in which they are profiled, criminalized and targeted. Unless we take action nothing will change. The Zimmerman verdict showed the world that Florida has no value for the life of its children. We have been engaged in a peaceful sit-in of the Governor Rick Scott's office in the State Capitol since Tuesday, July 16 demanding that he call a special session of the legislature to deal with these issues. After three days of waiting and sleeping on the Capitol floor while the Governor traveled around the country and state, he finally agreed to meet with us on Thursday, July 18th. Unfortunately, when the Governor finally met with a contingent from the group, he failed to rise to the occasion. Rather than using his considerable power to create change, he told us he would call for a statewide day of prayer to end racial profiling. We feel he has to do much more. This is an opportunity for Governor Rick Scott and the Florida legislature to show leadership prove their commitment to the next generation of Floridians.

The Judicial system has spoken and found George Zimmerman not guilty. This case was not about race nor was it about civil rights.

In the Bloomberg era, the NYPD has stopped New Yorkers over five million times in its controversial stop-and-frisk program. Nearly 90% of those stopped are Black or Latino/a and the vast majority (nearly 90%) have done nothing wrong. New Yorkers have had enough of discriminatory policing – and our elected leaders in the City Council have gotten the message and taken action. Last month, the City Council passed the Community Safety Act (Intro 1079 and 1080), two new landmark laws that will create independent oversight for the NYPD, and protect New Yorkers from discriminatory police profiling based on race, ethnicity, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, immigration status, disability, and housing status. Mayor Bloomberg vetoed the legislation on July 23rd, but that does not seem to be enough for him. In his unique position as New York’s wealthiest citizen (in addition to being mayor), he and his surrogates have threatened to use his wealth to attack City Council Members who vote to override his veto. While it is legal because of the wrong-headed Citizens United Supreme Court decision, this is a gross distortion of government. If a sitting mayor with effectively unlimited wealth can flood a small City Council race with attack ads and mailers solely for the purpose of fighting a law he disagrees with but the legislature has passed, the “checks and balances” and separation of powers are entirely distorted. We are ready for a new era for the NYPD, to repair police-community relations and to embrace policing strategies that ensure everyone feels safe walking the streets. We cannot allow one wealthy mayor to stand in the way of progress.

Years ago in a town in the South Negroes decided to ban together and bring financial impact upon certain business to right certain wrongs. Pressure is one means we have to bring light to a problem. They boycotted restaurants, department stores and busses. We can have an impact on the economy of the state of Florida. Might seem small but lets agree as a community to cease buying any and all Orange juices, Oranges, Grapefruit and citrus. Lets not go to Disney or to Universal Studios. Lets take action that will have impact. Talking on FB and social media has some impact. The loss of dollars may however cause people to pay attention to us as a people. Let us begin today July 14 to rally around Travon and start the dialogue necessary to make significant and lasting change on the American landscape. The jury decided the outcome on George Zimmerman based on Florida Law. The law has been shown to be applied in an unequal manner a few times in the past year. The outcome was magnified in the death of Trayvon Martin. People of every hue have marched across the country in outrage at the verdict.. Sign , send , forward , circulate. The petition is two fold, it calls for a boycott and a change in state laws. We have to stop talking and start acting in a manner that the country as a whole will recognize and understand.
