• Call on the NYC Council to Adopt CEDAW
So many women today face discrimination on a daily basis--whether in the workplace, at home, in their personal lives, or in any other domain--that goes largely unnoticed by society but that we must work to stop. CEDAW outlines provisions key to ending discrimination against women and to protecting women's equality and fair treatment. It is a United Nations resolution that the United States has not ratified but that cities around the county, such as San Francisco, are acting on and adopting.

  • It's time to fight back against on-campus assaults!
“The price of a college education should not include a 1 in 5 chance of being sexually assaulted." Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand and Claire McCaskill are tired of colleges ignoring sexual assault, flouting survivor protection laws, and blaming victims for their rape. They have a plan to enforce the Clery Act, which requires colleges to disclose assaults on and off-campus, bolster Title IX protections that provide staff for survivors, and expand the Violence Against Women Act to better protect students. But they need appropriations subcommittee chairman Sen. Tom Harkin to sign on for the money needed for the Department of Education and Office of Civil Rights to get it done — and if we don't speak up, college assaults will continue to be an everyday horror ignored by millions. Will you call on the chairman to put an end to college sexual assaults?

  • Women's Rights for Latinas
In modern society, many women are still not treated as equals to men. They are quite often subject to severe sexism, violence, and lack of education in Latin American communities.

  • Gender Equality in the Workplace
Women are largely absent from the top levels of corporate management, only 7 out of 100 of the highest earning CEOs in America are women! The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) Office has recently issued some strong and detailed recommendations for removing barriers for equal pay and improve the status for women in the workplace. The Paycheck Fairness Act was a good beginning to the fight for equality, don't let this issue be set aside so easily. Tell the White House and Congress that this bill needs to be re-introduced and then passed!

  • Pass the Paycheck Fairness Act
Since the passage of the Equal Pay act of 1963 the pay gap has improved but not nearly enough. Over the past decade the wage gap in Maine has improved by only 3 percent. This disparity impacts all Mainers. It not only restricts opportunity for women but also limits ways mothers can provide for their children. Senior women will find it harder to retired while more Maine children are raised in poverty. We need to broaden career choices for women, expand the minimum wage, enforce equal employment laws and eliminate discrimination in the work place.

  • Pass the Paycheck Fairness Act -- We Need Equal Pay for Equal Work!
Women are paid, on average, 77 to 86 cents for every dollar a man is paid -- for the same amount of work. To address this, the House of Representatives passed the Paycheck Fairness Act in 2009, of which I was a proud original co-sponsor. This bill would finally end discriminatory pay practices based on gender. Five years later, this bill is still not law due to the obstructionism in the U.S. Senate. This week, the Senate will be reconsidering the Paycheck Fairness Act again. Please sign and share this petition urging the Senate to pass this bill -- it’s time we had equal pay for equal work for women.

  • Stop Shackling Pregnant Women in Maryland
In correctional facilities across the state, women literally have their babies while in chains. That is because pregnant women in Maryland’s jails and prisons are routinely handcuffed and shackled throughout their pregnancies — including during labor and delivery.

  • Hobby Lobby wants to ban employees from even KNOWING about birth control!
We knew Hobby Lobby was suing the government so it could put its "corporate religious beliefs" over its employees’ right to contraceptive coverage. Apparently it wasn't enough to make female employees pay out of pocket for their birth control. Now Hobby Lobby wants to ban their employees from even talking to their doctors about contraception! If Hobby Lobby wins their case in court, it won't just set back women's right to affordable health care, it'll be a major victory for the concept of "corporate personhood" over workers’ rights. Corporations shouldn't have greater constitutional rights than people, and Hobby Lobby's "religious rights" shouldn't trump the free speech and privacy rights of their employees. Tell Hobby Lobby to stop micromanaging their employees’ private lives and drop their demands for a birth control "gag rule."

  • Tell Louisiana lawmakers to stop wasting our money and taking away our right to choose! Vote NO ...
I have seen Louisiana pass dozens of laws that end in court. The State dedicates already scarce funds to pay for lawyers to defend laws that end up being overturned. In the end, not only do they waste the time of the lawyers, but the State often has to pay damages. Instead of passing laws that promote a religious agenda, and feathering their own political nest, the lawmakers should help the people they represent. Louisiana is 49th in the nation for infant mortality, and 44th in the nation for pregnant women’s mortality. They should put the money they keep spending on settlements where it can make a real difference to the people.

  • Ask Facebook to Remove Harmful Group "Manhood University"
The Facebook group "Manhood University" advertises itself as a haven for the religious-minded, but it is really a covert expression of bigotry and hatred. It takes barely a minute of scanning their Facebook page to see that they are promoting hateful, sexist ideas and encouraging slut-shaming, victim-blaming, and the general dehumanization of women as sex objects. Facebook is a place for free expression, but at what cost? Ask Facebook to remove this hurtful, abusive content.
