• 17 year-old Florida boy killed over pack of skittles - SPEAK UP!
Trayvon Martin (17 years old) was walking home from the store in a gated Stanford, FL community with a pack of skittles and a drink when he was labeled as "suspicious" and shot and KILLED by an armed neighborhood watch guard. Despite the fact that Trayvon was completely unarmed, George Zimmerman (a white man) believed the young black teen to be dangerous and even AFTER being told by police to "stand down" he took it in his own hands and shot the young boy in cold blooded murder. We're calling on you, America, to stand up for justice and demand that Zimmerman be charged with his crimes! Please sign the petition and pass it on to all of your family and friends! Let's stand together and show that this is NOT acceptable in ANY community! http://news.yahoo.com/family-florida-boy-killed-neighborhood-watch-seeks-arrest-044537742.html

  • Telluride needs an affordable fitness center
There is no fitness center in Telluride that is affordable or comprehensive. If communities like Ouray, Delta and Silverton can provide their citizens with a gym, Telluride should also. We are asking Parks and Recreation to provide a fitness center for everyone to enjoy.

  • US-funded Coral Mining in the RMI
The FAA, in a series of airport improvement projects using local contractors, has unintentionally caused the mining of near-shore lagoon coral reefs as a source of fill; the local EPA has always approved or ignored this practice. For example, in 2008 a large reef was mined by PII (a local company) for the ARFF fire station project (pictures available on Flickr). The US is required to follow a higher environmental road, thanks to Bill Clinton's Executive Order 13089, which specifically requires protection of coral reefs even outside the US. Yet coral mining has again been approved, and may start within months, if local EPA approves it (for a second time) and if the US Embassy here in Majuro approves the local approval.

  • NH doesn't need photo I.D.'s for voters
Voter fraud is practically non-existent, and the NH legislature should stop wasting so much time on bills restricting peoples' rights. The requirement of any I.D. document that costs the citizen money is equal to imposing a poll tax, which was prohiited in 1964, by the 24th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

  • PA Tobacco Tax & Cessation/Prevention Programming
The PA State Legislature has the opportunity to save lives by adding a tax to non-smoking tobacco products and by increasing monetary support for tobacco cessation and prevention programming. PA is the only state that does not tax non-smoking tobacco products. These changes may prevent youth from becoming tobacco users.

  • End the Gay Marriage Ban
This petition is about the injustice and inequality that the gay community is facing in the state of Florida. Although discrimination against gays exists in other parts of our country, it is slowly declining with the recent legislation allowing gays to marry in several states such as New York, Washington, and Maryland. Ending this ban will end the use of personal religious beliefs in politics.

  • Landmark Admirals Row!
On January 27, 2012, New York City took title to the Admirals Row property in the old Brooklyn Navy Yard. The six-acre site, which was decommissioned in 1966, comprises ten historic mansions that housed senior officers since 1848, the last remaining U.S. Navy timber shed, built in 1838, plus a parade ground and tennis courts. The city's plans to redevelop the site include a 75,000 sq. ft. supermarket, 160,000 sq. ft. of additional retail space, plus industrial space and parking. Under the current scheme only the timber shed and one of the mansions will be rehabilitated. The development plans are excessive and should be reconsidered: * Admirals Row qualifies as a landmark district in New York City, New York State, and the National Register of Historic Places. * The six-acre site, equivalent to 2.5 city blocks, has sufficient space to accommodate both preservation and development. * There has been inadequate public process. The few public hearings were not publicized and poorly attended. * The Uniform Land Use Procedure (ULURP) including 9 zoning variances, which allows for demolition of the site, was rushed through prior to title transfer, again with insufficient public involvement. * The site includes a number of old growth trees, only four to be saved in the current plan. * The planned supermarket is of a scale way beyond local requirements, and will be the largest in the City. * Planned parking provisions are insufficient. * ALL the buildings, though dilapidated, are salvageable. * Landmarking of the entire Admirals Row will preserve epochal architecture, provide a valuable local amenity, and establish a national heritage site. * The cost of rehabilitation is minor compared to the overall development scheme. * The NYC Landmarks Commission has never had the opportunity to review the status of the site. * Steps should be taken immediately to prevent further deteriation.
