• Students Are Adults When They Are 18 Years of Age
The Federal Department of Education requires students up to the age of 24 (unless they are married or veterans) to involve thier parents in the financing of their higher education. It is nearly impossible to get declared "independent" and the student has to either get a co-signer for a student loan or their parent has to take out a "Parent Plus" loan. Many of us are unable to do this for our children as we are the generation who waited to have them until we were in our late 30s and are therefore saving as much as possible for our upcoming retirements. Personally I have had to tell my children no to either a Parent Plus loan or co-signing a loan due to the impact these would have on my credit worthiness. This has made it nearly impossible for them to attend college. This must be stopped! We are not responsible for our children after they become adults at 18. They can vote, own property, join the military etc. Therefore they should be responsible enough to pay for thier own educations. Please sign this petition to lower this arbitrary age limit to 18 and ask the Dept of Education to change these loand to "Undergraduate Plus" loans, taken out by the student, not their parents.

  • Restore United Airlines Pension Plans
During bankruptcy, United Airlines terminated its employee pension plans and handed them to the Pension Benefit Guarantee Corporation (PBGC), resulting in up to 80% losses of benefits for retirees. United violated PBGC rules by stating its frequent flyer program was nearly a $400 million liability, its book value, when it should have been shown as a $7 billion asset, its market value as per PBGC requirements. Part of that program could have been sold, as Air Canada did, with that money used to fund its pensions. Now United is highly profitable and has over $8 billion in cash. The PBGC, funded to a great extent by American taxpayers, has the authority to make United take back and restore its pension plans, greatly improving the quality of life for United retirees and removing that liability from taxpayers.

  • Eliminate FICA earnings cap
90% of American wage earners pay 6.2 % of their income into Social Security each year. The top 10% of American wage earners pay less than than 1% of their income into social security because they earn over $100,000 each year. Have every American pay the 6.2% rate of all income earned, to insure Social Security for the future.

  • Parliamentary Procedure for Congress
By current rules, Congresspersons can pose an amendment which can have little or nothing to do with an essential bill, which will almost certainly be passed. A case in point is the allowance of loaded guns in national parks, sneakily amended to the Credit Card reform bill, which passed.

  • Limit the Filibuster
What was once a useful tool to prevent the majority from riding roughshod over the minority, in the Senate, has become a tool for preventing any work from being done and keeps the majority from meeting the needs of its constituents. It's time for the filibuster to change. If each party were limited to three filibusters, in each session of Congress, they would be used very cautiously and only for the most critical of reasons.

  • I want your resignation, Kansas Republican Mike O'Neill.
He doesn't deserve the office he was sworn to uphold. I was raised to have the utmost respect for the President of our Country..whether I agreed with his policies or not. He should be arrested for death threats against our President, and his family.

  • City of Tucson - Move Your Money!
With a track record of mortgage abuses and unfair treatment of low income and minority customers, Wells Fargo does not represent the values of most Tucsonans. Yet the City of Tucson and the Rio Nuevo board invest a large portion of our community's money in Wells Fargo accounts. At the height of the sub-prime lending boom, Wells Fargo was 3-4 times more likely to loan sub-prime mortgages to financially stable Latinos and African-Americans than to Caucasians. In 2010, Wells was fined by a U.S. District Judge for its predatory overdraft practices. And Wells Fargo is one of only two remaining U.S. banks to offer Direct Deposit Advance, a type of high interest payday loan available right from the ATM machine, with marketing targeting low income and minority customers. Tucson deserves better! Let's call on the City of Tucson and Rio Nuevo to move OUR money out of Wells Fargo and back into our community through investment in a community bank!

  • Petition to immediately halt and invalidate the undemocratic and fraudulent election of the SEIU ...
On Friday, January 6, 2012, the day before the Citywide San Francisco Bargaining Team election voting began, the 1021 Union Administration quietly and without grounds removed Sin Yee Poon, a member who meets the eligibility requirements of being in good standing and employed by the City and County of San Francisco at the Human Services Agency, from the list of nominee for Bargaining Team and from the Election ballots. Sin Yee was duly nominated and had accepted the nomination. When members indicated that they would start a write-in campaign, the Union Administration promptly declared write-ins “unacceptable” and that it would “disqualify” such votes. This totally undemocratic action by the 1021 Union Administration again disrespects the rights and authority of the membership to elect the representatives of our choice that will best reflect and advocate for our interest, particularly during very important contract negotiations.

Please circulate this email and a list of instructions to all family members, staff (call from cell phones) and friends to call the NJ Governor’s office, refer to Bill S-2316 and express your OPPOSITION to the Bill. The Governor's Office general phone number is (609) 292-6000. You may call to express your opposition to the legislation and to request that the Governor veto the legislation. All you need do is ask the receptionist to put you in touch with someone who can log your opposition to the bill. Provide the bill number, your opposition to the bill, a request for a veto, and answer any questions asked. You should not get into a protracted conversation about the bill as the person who you will be put in touch with will likely have no idea what the bill is about. If the governor sign this bill into law, it will create the same chaos that New York has!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ban Fireworks in Times of High Fire Danger
Hit by extreme drought, New Mexico suffered devastating forest fires this year, yet the Governor and local officials cannot ban the use and sale of fireworks when fire danger is high. The New Mexico legislature is considering a bill, SB 5, that would give the Governor, and city and county officials the ability to ban fireworks when fire danger is extreme. Call on your legislator to support the ban. The legislature is in session from January 17 to February 18.
