Mr. Lauder writes as a pro-Israel advocate and he couches his arguments in terms of preserving Israel as Jewish and democratic. Nonetheless, Mr. Lauder’s ideas are more universally applicable to the quest for Israel-Palestinian peace. Mr. Lauder identifies two aspects of Israeli government policy that undermine any chance for peace in the region: • Mr. Lauder says that a two-state solution (2SS)—a Palestinian state alongside Israel—is essential for peace. He says that the 2SS is threatened by Israel’s settlement project that expropriates Palestinian land, and calls for a major effort to promote the 2SS.. • Mr. Lauder also says that Israel’s capitulation to religious extremists “is turning a modern, liberal nation into a semi-theocratic one.” He calls for tolerance among the many strands of Judaism and by implication other religions that share the land. Mr. Lauder’s drive to preserve Israel and Jewish and democratic is also a drive to bring peace to Israel-Palestine and all the people who live in the region. We supports Mr. Lauder and the World Jewish Congress in their quest for peace. Mr. Lauder’s op-ed is important because it is a firm statement by a major player in the Israel lobby that settlements are the key barrier to peace. We congratulate Mr. Lauder. New York is one of only a handful of states that has no early voting option. New York not only lacks same-day voter registration—but it requires voters to register at least twenty-five days before Election Day. New York also makes it hard to request an absentee ballot too. This is why there are long lines on Election Day, and why voting is as much of a mess in New York as the subway system. But we can change it! Governor Cuomo's budget includes funding for early voting and automatic voter registration. The Assembly budget includes only early voting, and the Senate budget includes vague language about voting. Budget negotiations are happening NOW. Tell Governor Cuomo to stand up for us and reject any budget that doesn't improve voting for New Yorkers. Lobbyists from Handy, an online gig economy platform, are trying to rush through a bill that would give them - and other online platforms - special treatment when it comes to how they treat their workers. Georgia lawmakers are only in session until March 29th, so we need to act now to stop this bill! A similar bill in Florida recently passed after less than 10 minutes of discussion by lawmakers , and in Tennessee it has passed both houses even though the Senator behind the called the gig economy the "gigabyte economy" in his testimony. Similar bills have already been introduced in 9 states by Handy, a company that just announced a partnership with Walmart, has the same lobbyist as Uber, and is facing five lawsuits for employee misclassification. The bill allows gig economy companies to treat workers as independent contractors, even if they don't receive the benefits of being an independent contractor, such as setting their own rates. Independent contractors should be just that -- independent. And if a worker doesn’t receive the benefits of being independent, they should receive the rights and protections of being an employee. Handy is pushing this legislation because it will save them from the lawsuits they are facing in five states for employee misclassification. Handy CEO Oisin Hanrahan is on record saying that changing the laws "would definitely help with some of the litigation that's in play." Lawmakers should be looking for solutions to extend rights and benefits to gig workers, not trying to save tech companies from lawsuits. There is a long history of excluding domestic workers from rights and protections, which is rooted in the legacy of slavery. Workers' voices need to be heard in these debates, but instead lawmakers are only listening to those like Handy lobbyist and venture capitalist Bradley Tusk. Tusk recently confessed that Handy chose Georgia and other states to introduce these bills because they believe they can pass them faster here than in states with stronger labor protections. With Handy pushing these bills across 9 states, we have a chance to stop the legislation in Georgia, stand up for workers, and be an example for the rest of the country. We live in a rural area that has about 1300 families. A 7500 to 10,000 hog CAFO May soon be building their CAFO 2 miles from our and other families Homes. These facilities must be stopped from multiplying to other rural areas and states. They also can spread diseases to humans.
