• IBWC: Save San Diego's Beaches from Sewage
Dear Commissioner Edward Drusina, Over the last 30 years, there has been an ongoing environmental crisis on the border of San Diego and Tijuana, Mexico. Millions of gallons of sewage consistently spill into the ocean and remain unchecked by both United States and Mexican authorities. The problem reached its peak a year ago, when in February 2017 an estimated 28-256 million gallons of raw sewage spilled from the Tijuana River into the Pacific Ocean, as stated in the International Boundary and Water Commission reports. The constant threat of spills is affecting the Imperial Beach, Chula Vista, Coronado and San Diego beach communities. Southern California relies on its beaches as an economic driver and having beaches closed hundreds of days out of the year has a negative impact on the entire region. For those who decide to venture into the polluted ocean, they are constantly plagued by ear, skin and respiratory infections. Not only do the sewage spills affect our beaches and tourist attractions, but they also put out national security at risk. Due to the Tijuana River’s closeness to the United States/Mexico Border, United States Border Patrol agents are impacted while on duty. Agents’ health is at risk, and day after day they are coming down with unknown skin and respiratory infections caused by their proximity and exposure to these spills. According to Christopher Harris, a union representative for National Border Patrol Council’s Local 1613, at least 83 agents reported sewage-related illnesses. We urge you to honor your role stated Article 3 of the Treaty of February 3, 1944, which enables the International Boundary and Water Commission “to give preferential attention to the solution of all border sanitation problems.” The constant runoff of raw sewage from the Tijuana River into San Diego would qualify as a border sanitation problem, and it is up to you to address this and hold your Mexican counterpart, Roberto Fernando Salmón Castelo, director general of the Comisión Internacional de Límites y Aguas, accountable. The current inaction on the part of the International Boundary and Water Commission is unacceptable. The entire Southern California region is suffering because of this environmental and health crisis. Honor your word. Enforce Article 3.

  • Coalition Against Sex Trafficking
Over 400,000 children are currently being victimized by sex trafficking in the United States. At risk youth such as LGTBQ, runways, and foster youth are targets for this type of exploitation. Our youth should be protected in this country and not targeted and used to sex trafficking in our own backyard.

  • Conversion Therapy with Minors in Michigan
I am a student at Eastern Michigan University in the Masters of Social Work Program. I am starting this petition in support of Rep. Zempke's bill to end conversion therapy by mental health professionals in the state of Michigan. The bill was introduced on February 13th 2018 for the 3rd time. Conversion therapy has no scientific basis and has many potential risks for clients, including depression, anxiety, social isolation and self-destructive behavior. According to many in the mental health community, sexual orientation and expressions of gender identity occur naturally therefore, there is no reason sexual orientation needs to be changed especially with methods proven to be harmful. Please help support the LBGTQ community in our state.

  • Don't Risk The Students Lives and Change The Designs
I am a sixteen-year-old student at Hillcrest High School. I and MANY other people find it very concerning about the new school plan. Looking at the new school plan I am saddened at how the safety concerns of the staff and students have been mitigated a tremendous amount. With the current epidemic on our hands about shootings that have been happening in schools. We would have thought that safety to the people working in a school and the students would be the first priority when making new designs for a school. Sadly we have been mistaken. The many concerns I have with the school are astonishing. The one myself and many parents and teachers are concerned with are the “glass walls”. Hearing the concerns of the teachers should have been enough to change the design plans but again, I am mistaken. At this time I will be started a petition and raising awareness about this safety hazard. These walls have many concerns to the staff/students. Please take note that I understand why you want to present these walls in schools. The light being let in suppose to academically make us improve. This being true and would have an effect on the student population...still doesn’t make up for the lack of a safety it provides. The other reason is for the fishbowl idea so Administration can look into classrooms to see what teachers are doing in their classrooms! There are many ways to get around that idea that is SAFE! Living the school life of coming into an already unsafe environment and being worried about what could happen (shooting, stabbing, bombs, and bullying). This concern is already too monumental. Having to go to school on anxiety medication because you are too scared to walk into the school is baffling. The school environment now isn’t anywhere near where it should be. These new building designs are NOT helping in any way, shape, or form. We don't care if the school is pleasing to the eye. We care about safety. I wish you would as well. The Risk of the glass walls is infinite (IF there was a school shooter, If there was an earthquake, if there were a fire, and etc) This does not include how distracting it would be to see people outside in the hallways! Kids get distracted when the door is open and there is a class/kids outside. We still should have a say in what the designs of our new school will be. Please don’t risk students lives and change the designs.

  • Reduce distracted driving by passing hands-free driving Legislation in MN!
HF1180 and SF837 allow voice-activated or other hands-free use of cell phones while prohibiting other uses of cell phones when the vehicle is in motion or part of traffic, with some exceptions. Why now?  18% increase in distracted driving fatalities from 2014 to 2015.  1 in 4 crashes involves distracted driving.  1 in 5 traffic fatalities involves distracted driving.  Distracted driving is now the fourth most common contributing factor in fatalities behind speed, impairment, and fatigue.
