  • Governor Rick Scott: We need real election reform now, including no less than 14 days of early vo...
On November 6th, voters in Florida were subject to long lines — sometimes waiting up to 7 hours, just to cast their vote. There were even voters in Miami-Dade County who were unable to vote until 1:30 a.m., long after the polls closed. Rick Scott and his Tallahassee politician puppets passed a sweeping voter suppression bill in 2011 that cut early voting from 14 days to 8, causing outrageously long lines we saw this past November. And those long lines had consequences. According to a new report, an estimated 201,000 Floridians were discouraged from voting. That is completely unacceptable. It is time we call on the governor and state legislature to fix the chaos they created. We must ensure the right to vote for all Floridians is not suppressed. Join Florida Watch Action as we call on Governor Rick Scott and the Florida legislature to enact real election reform without delay, including no less than 14 days of early voting.

  • No cuts to education
All Americans deserve a quality education. Education is the only service provided to all Americans that helps them with their future and their dreams. In Illinois and other states there are people who want to cut education funding. This is wrong!

  • More funding for the Education of Homeless Children
I am asking our state representatives and community leaders in Minnesota to allocate more funding for the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act and programs for homeless families. In Minnesota, the challenge of homelessness for families has grown more striking in recent years. In 2012, The Wilder Research Center found that homeless families and children made up the largest segment of homeless people in Minnesota. Homeless children, in particular, have disproportionate negative academics experiences, including high rates of transferring schools, absenteeism, and grade repetition, among other barriers. The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act provides federal funds for states to build awareness of the needs of these children and families who face homelessness. The McKinney-Vento Act also guarantees immediate enrollment to a school of choice and stability for homeless students and families. Yet the reality is not all districts implement this law nor have an active homeless liaison. Also, many districts struggle to pay for the transportation of their students from temporary residences to schools miles away. It is, thus, imperative that every school district is aware and well-educated about this law or the stigma attached with homelessness will continue. Therefore, I ask that we support more funding for the McKinney-Vento Act, more trained liaisons, and more community partnerships to eliminate this stigma for students and their families.

  • Switch to Daylight Savings Time Permanently
The practice of changing from standard time to daylight savings time has become outdated. The current system extends daylight savings time from the second Sunday of March until the first Sunday of November, meaning standard time is used for approximately only 4 months each year. A recent poll showed 73% of people were in favor of extending daylight savings time year round (http://blog.al.com/wire/2013/03/florida_considers_extending_da.html). It is time to adopt daylight savings time permanently.

Any politician caught making a false public statement as fact will be fined $100,000. Politicians should be fined for publicly presenting fabricated information as fact, and, as adults, are expected to preface such statements they haven't verified with a disclaimer.

  • Allow Schools to Opt Out of the Triborough Amendment
New Yorkers pay the highest cost per student for education in the Country and each year education continues to gets more expensive. The key driver of this out of control spending is the Triborough Amendment. It allows employee contracts to remain in effect until a new contract is negotiated giving unions little incentive to negotiate. School Districts should be allowed to opt out of the Triborough Amendment.
