• End Corporal Punishment in Schools
The efficacy of corporal punishment has shown to be minimal, at best. 19 states still allow paddling and other forms of physical punishment in school. In my state, each community sets its own policy; and in many communities schools are allowed to discipline the students with corporal punishment against the wishes of parents.

  • Stop the destruction of care for torture victims
The Red Cross in Stockholm, Sweden has for 25 years been running a specialized clinic helping torture victims from all over the world. These very vulnerable patients need to meet professional caregivers with a long experience. The county council in Stockholm has now decided that this care can be procured from a private, VC owned company, since "experience is not an asset". This must be stopped

  • New Years Resolution to Defend Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid
The Republicans’ relentless assault on the American Dream hasn’t stopped in 2011 - every day, Republicans try a new code word or political maneuver to destroy Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid - the programs that built the middle class in this country. Working families rely on these programs every day. We oppose any attempts to balance the budget on the backs of the 99% of us - seniors and working families who have been struggling in this recession.

  • Pass the Stock Act!
The Stock Act has been milling around the U.S. Legislature for years collecting dust while waiting for members of Congress to sponsor and promote its passage. The Act is designed to prohibit any member of Congress from investing or divesting in stock based on inside information obtained while working on a committee, having attended other important decision-making meetings, etc. It is illegal for anyone else to buy or sell stock based on inside information, and it should be for Congress as well.

  • Coloradans Need Health Care NOW! Full Care, For All, For Less
In Colorado, spending what we do now or less, we can have full health care for everyone, with better outcomes. Coloradans deserves to have affordable, quality health care. Every taxpayer and business needs relief from escalating insurance costs. We need to pay for our health care in a way that is efficient, transparent and accountable to us - the residents of Colorado. We need Colorado money to stay in Colorado and to create Colorado jobs.  The Federal health reform legislation won't get us there. Coloradans need to take health reform into our own hands. Vermont is creating a universal, affordable health care system, and Colorado can also if we all work together. We need to tell the governor and legislators that Coloradans need more than incremental improvements. Tell them that we'll help them do what's right: affordable, quality, sustainable health care for all Colorado residents.  For more information: 4COHealth.org HealthCareforAllColorado.org

  • Stop the Python Ban
    S. 373 proposes to end interstate commerce of 7 large python species, and makes possession of these species illegal by adding them to the Lacey Act. This will have unintended consequences of killing jobs in the pet industry, as well as spurring owners to get rid of their now-illegal pets by any means, including releasing them into the wild, wich would worsen the invasion of these species into the ecosystems of the United States.

  • Trinity Church: Don't Arrest Occupiers, Offer Sanctuary!
Occupy Wall Street, having been violently evicted from Zuccotti Park, is desperately searching for a new home in Lower Manhattan. And Trinity Wall Street Episcopal Church has a vacant lot just a mile away that could be an ideal location. As a group of occupiers put it in an open letter, "We have asked the Church time and time again to grant us political sanctuary on their unused lands. It is time for Trinity to decide whether it is a Church or a real estate company. " The group began a hunger strike on the site over the weekend, and Trinity responded by calling the New York Police Department and having the protesters arrested. We've launched this petition to send a message to Trinity: It's time to offer sanctuary to Occupy Wall Street!
