• San Francisco Supervisors: Don't Skip Funding for Climate
Anybody who woke up in San Francisco under the orange sky on September 9, 2020 knows that climate change is undeniably upon us. But if we start now, there are still many things we can do to turn the tide and avoid the worst impacts. In our city that means rapidly switching our homes and vehicles off of fossil fuels and moving to cleaner, safer, electric alternatives powered by renewable energy; expanding transit; strengthening our ecosystems; and protecting and empowering the communities that will face the worst impacts. San Franciscans are ready to step up and do our part, but we need support and help from our city's leadership. The Department of the Environment (SFE) has outlined an $11 million budget over the next years to begin tackling the biggest sources of the city's carbon emissions, doing so in a way that focuses on justice and equity for the most vulnerable communities. Community groups are calling for additional funds for clean electrification pilots, incentives for eliminating fossil fuels in homes and transportation, and better clarity and protection from the hazards of sea level rise in Hunters Point and other contaminated areas. Additionally, planting trees to capture carbon and provide protection against extreme heat -- a key element of the CAP -- would be especially cost-effective in a city that lags most others in the extent of its tree canopy. Climate change won't wait for politics as usual to play itself out -- the longer we wait, the harder it gets to avoid the increasingly threatening consequences of a hotter planet. The Board of Supervisors will be reviewing the proposed budget in the month of June. We demand that they recognize the scale of the crisis by fully funding SFE's $11 million budget request and additional CAP priorities.

It is the season where turtles are out and about, theyā€™re an important part of our ecosystem and everyday innocent turtles are being killed by drivers who are unaware that turtles are crossing the road. We need to make people /drivers more aware to watch out for the turtles. This is happening near Liverpool and Levan Wetland Nature Preserve. Help save the turtles.

  • Masks Keep Travel and Communities Safe and Accessible
People at high risk and their family members have a right to be able to attend school, to work, and to travel, just like everyone else. Requiring masks in public transportation settings is an important measure that can keep vital parts of the community safe and accessible for everyone. I am the mother of three beautiful children: a kind and sensitive Lego lover, a spunky son who tackles every challenge with a smile, and a confident and feisty daughter. My hilarious and spunky middle child also has several disabilities. He spent the first 11 months of his life in the hospital and has a history of chronic respiratory failure. He also has a tracheostomy and requires a ventilator to help him breathe. He had a stroke shortly after his second birthday, which puts him at risk of clotting issues. Our family embraces everything about each of my kidsā€”including disability, which we view as just another part of life and parenthood! As you can imagine, my sonā€™s health conditions put him at extremely high risk of developing serious complications were he to contract COVID-19. Also, my 4-year-old is not yet eligible to be vaccinated against COVID-19, leaving her at increased risk as well. I am grateful for the decisions the Biden administration has made to prioritize the health and safety of individuals with disabilities and those who are immunocompromised. But the recent decision by a Florida judge to strike down the transportation mask mandate could have devastating consequences for my family and so many others. Please know that mask mandates on public transportation are indispensable to families like mine. Time and time again, we've seen COVID-19 measures be relaxed, only for cases to rise, leading to more and more preventable deaths. It's unacceptable. More than a million people have already died in the U.S. from COVID-19. Continuing to protect those at risk by maintaining basic public health protections during a pandemic is not a hardship; it is the bare minimum we must do to protect the health of our country.

  • Free programming courses for children
This is important because we need to provide children with useful knowledge that will be of use to them in life. We need to teach the subjects that will be of use to them in life. And help them earn a decent wage.

  • Raise the legal age to buy a gun to 25
Think back to when you were 18, 19, even 21, did you have need for a automatic rifle? Or even a handgun? So, why would we sell guns to 18 year olds? With no training, little background info, and zero questioning, we let a child buy weapons that kill. Are you comfortable with this? Please help raise this ridiculous legal age limit to something other than 18.

  • Demand the IRS investigate the NRA's non-profit for misappropriation of funds!
Gun control bills, such as H.R.8 and H.R.1446 have passed in the House but stalled in the Senate. This is, in large part, due to the NRA investing millions of dollars to influence lawmakers.Ā The NRA non-profit status allows them to increase profits for the gun industry, at the expense of all of our lives. The mounting evidence against themā€”in terms of how they handle their non-profit fundsā€”only increases every year. The government works for the people, and the IRS can take action to protect the most vulnerable in our society by investigating the NRA for misappropriation of funds.

  • Ban Assault Weapons Now! Demand an Executive Order while the Senate dawdles.
According to the GVA, the Gun Violence Archive, there have been 213 mass shootings in 2022 thus far. In 2021 there were 692, and in 2020: 610. The US gun industry is making record profits while there are record numbers of mass shootings every year. Their sales of these assault weapons is literally supporting domestic terrorism. Blood is on their hands and they must be stopped and held accountable. Our country is living with the terror of gun violence daily; the gun manufacturers have been better protected than our children! This must stop now.

  • Tell the NRA to Cancel Its Upcoming Convention in Texas
Thereā€™s something deeply troubling when attack after attack on our schools, places of worship, and community institutions simply go on without any government response other than thoughts, prayers, and soundbites on cable tv. While there are differences of opinion on the NRA and the exact current day interpretation of the Second Amendment, we should all be able to agree that itā€™s inappropriate for the largest gun lobbying organization in the world to host a celebratory convention in the very same state as this weekā€™s mass elementary school shooting. Tell the NRA and Houston First Corporation to cancel the convention.

  • Tell Politicians to Protect Families, Not the NRA
Thereā€™s something deeply troubling when attack after attack on our schools, places of worship, and community institutions simply go on without any government response other than thoughts, prayers, and soundbites on cable tv. A right-wing racist gunned down ten community members in a Buffalo, NY supermarket. The attack on a Taiwanese Presbyterian Church in Laguna Hills, CA was carried out with two legally purchased guns and bags containing incendiary devices and extra ammunition. And the horrifying attack on Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, TX killed at least nineteen students and two adults with weapons legally purchased by the teen shooter. The gun homicide rate in the United States is 25 times higher than that of other developed countries. Congress must act to pass meaningful legislation immediately. Our families are under attack, and shouldnā€™t have to live in constant fear of our safety for one more moment. We cannot let the NRAā€™s political agenda win out over what we all know is safest for our own families and communities.

  • Congress Must Act: Gun Violence Is Killing Our Children!

Our families are under attack, and shouldnā€™t have to live in constant fear of our safety for one more moment. The United States House passed a bill years ago that would require background checks and waiting periods for anyone wanting to buy a gun. These are basic protections we need to start keeping our kids safe, but Republicans in the Senate have blocked it. The bill is up for a vote again in the Senate soon - urge your Senators to pass it - and go even farther to make sure we donā€™t lose even more elementary school kids.

  • Cancel the NRA's event NOW!
THE MORAL IMPERATIVE: We are mourning. Children should not be sent to school to die. They deserve to live in a country that is safe, to learn and to grow without the threat of violence in their communities. Hosting the annual meeting of the lobby that has recklessly endangered their lives is a moral affront. THE ASK: We call for a national pledge to boycott the George R. Brown Convention Center and Hilton Americas-Houston Hotel unless the upcoming NRA annual meeting is canceled. We ask that those who sign on exercise our collective power against the assaults and complicity.
